1972 SAUK EE Volume 34 PITTSFIELD HIGH SCHOOL Pittsfield, Illinois DEDICATION We, the Annual Staff, wish to dedicate the 1972 Saukee to Mr. Clay Irick. His friendliness to all will long be remembered. Mr. Irick taught geometry and general math, as well as serving as golf coach. He was more than a teacher and a coach though, he was a friend. He was never too busy to advise a student or help a fellow faculty member. This annual is only a small token of commemoration to the man who has been an influence in the life of every student he ever taught. It is with the deepest respect that we dedicate the yearbook to Mr. Irick, a teacher, a coach, and a friend to all. It has been a year full of fun, excitement, and discovery for Luis. He has learned a new way of living here at PHS, and has broaden our opinions of teenagers other than ourselves. Although Luis says classwork is easier here, it is still difficult to do everything in English. Luis adapted to our rat-race pace and wasted little time in becoming an active part of American school life. He served as president of Spanish Club and also participated in the volleyball intramural program. Luis spent much of his free time speaking at dinners and various organizational meetings in the community. Luis has given PHS an insight into the life of the people of Costa Rica, as we hope we have given him an insight into America, its people, and its way of life. We hope we have achieved our goal. The long hours that we have worked to produce this book and all the effort that has gone into it will be determined by how well you like this yearbook. I wish to thank everyone who has helped me in any way, especially Mrs. Durall, our advisor, and my hard working staff. I would like to congratulate the Seniors and challenge them, especially, and everyone else, also, to achieve their best in every undertaking of their life. lj x oJ-xxJ $-n i Editor of 1971-72 Saukee Yearbook 8 Faculty SCHOOL BOARD STANDING: Phil Hoover, Wade Grimes, T.N. Our Senior Class officers for 1971-1972 were Rick Barton, President; Jennie Daniels, Vice-President; Jackie Smith, Secretary; and Mike Roseberry, Treasurer. To begin the year we had magazine sales. Although we didn't do too well in this area, our concession stands, at both the football and basketball games, did more than enough to make it up. Also our faithful candy salesmen came through to help. Our lovely Homecoming Queen was Susan Smith. She was crowned at the bonfire by Rod Fralicx and at the formal dance by Jay Carlton. Susan's senior attendants were Shelley Dively, Jackie Smith, Jane Dempsey, Patti Hobbs, Molly Miller Shaw, and Theresa Ervin. Ruth Ann Cooper was honorary attendant. Our class was very well represented in the Student Council and much work was accomplished. The senior members were Connie Smith, Rachel Shaw, Paula Chamberlain, Molly Miller Shaw, Doug Reel, and the two substitutes were Jay Carlton and Susan Smith. We had two senior cheerleaders on the Varsity Squad: Shelley Dively and Patti Hobbs. There were also three senior girls in the Saukettes who did a fine job! Theresa Ervin, Connie Smith and Becky Buchanan. In years to come as we look back at our high school years, our senior year will be the best and will hold the fondest memories. We were sad at having lost these years but we'll be nappy because these years have helped us gain a good start on our future lives. The best of luck to all the seniors in everything they do and may the spirit of the Class of 72 live forever! 24 DON ANSTEDT DAN BARROW Football 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,3; Golf 1,2,3, 4; Student Council 1,2; There isn't much to be said that hasn't already been said. Perhaps the Senior Class history said it best. Our memories of high school have not all been happy ones. Every time we, who went to Quincy that night, hear the theme from 'Romeo and Juliet,' we remember that vivacious country girl that was so full of love for everyone. Let us have a moment of silent remembrance in honor of Peggy Foster. 38 So Many Roads To Choose We Start Out Walking And Yet, We've Just Begun . . . Sharing Horizons Before The Rising Sun J mjr We Fly m______ And Learn To Run That Are New To Us Watching The Signs Along The Way Working Together 40 And When The Evening Comes AND YES, WE’VE JUST BEGUN Classes This year's junior class has been the best ever. To begin our year, we had our Dunking Stand at the fall festival, a bake sale before Christmas, sold Saukee Numerals and Tee-Shirts, and had a faculty-state police basketball game. These were a few projects to make money to finance the Prom. The theme for Prom was In the Misty Moonlight. Our Student Council representatives were Theresa Landess, Nancy Niebur, Teresa Chamberlain, Steve Moore, and Bruce Winner. This year's junior class officers were: Eric Gerard, President; Pat Newman, Vice-President; Nina Hubbard, Secretary; John Sidwell, Treasurer; and Mr. Johnson, Advisor. We had three outstanding cheerleaders on the Varsity Squad: Becky Barton, Julie Goewey, and Becky Irving. Our Homecoming attendants were Lisa Ervin and Theresa Landess. Both boys were very active in school organizations, activities, and athletics. Bruce and Roger played on the varsity football team. Bruce also played basketball and baseball. Roger was an honor student and served as freshman class president and sophomore class treasurer. The Class of 74 , the friends, and the families of Roger Neese and Bruce Kattelman will remember the dependability, the cheerful attitudes, and the willingness of the boys to help a friend in need. Rodney Fralicx crowned Susan at the informal crowning Thursday night. As the huge bonfire burned, the coaches commented on the upcoming football game. Later the cheerleaders white-washed the streets with good luck. Friday was casual day at school. The students were led to the square in a procession headed by the football players and the band. The victory marked our fifty-second consecutive win. Saturday night's activities were set in motion as Jay Carlton crowned Susan as the 1971-72 Homecoming Queen. Susan's runners-up were Shelley Dively, Jackie Smith, Jane Dempsey and Theresa Ervin. In spite of the eerie decorations. Homecoming was a brilliant success. 66 67 SUMMERTREE Young Man Little Boy Mother . . Father . . Soldier . . Young girl Roger Edmonds . Bill Newman ... Sue Weil . Mike Niebur . . . Steve Cox Shelley Dively Cowan's Summertree is about a young man of 20, dreaming in his back yard, or is it enemy territory, and surveying his life. His dreams swiftly go back and forth in time as we see his relationship with his loving but obtuse and possessive parents and compliant but unsentimental girl friend. A girl friend who, while remaining faithful to him when he is in the Army, dates other fellows. The cast also includes a neighbor boy who at times is the hero's little brother or the hero as a child. And there is also a soldier who explains the true location of our friendly summertree which is ultimately Viet Nam and a battle of no return. In our story we find in final essence, that memories are all we can truly hold on to. 68 69 “WHAT A PIECE OF WORK IS MAN” Narrators: Jaques................................. The narrators argue man's worth and conjure up scenes to illustrate their points. What a Piece of Work is Man was written by Mr. Jon Robb, drama coach and Thespian advisor. My purpose in writing this play is to show that Shakespeare still has a great deal to say to modem audiences, and that he writes exciting and enjoyable theatre. The climax is from the tragic play Macbeth. Jaques won his argument, but he learned also that in condemning man, he condemned himself and that in spite of all his baseness and foolishness, man also has moments of nobility and greatness. 71 The Cast Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi Ernestina..............
