1971 SAUKEE PITTSFIELD HIGH SCHOOL Pittsfield, Illinois FACULTY 9 CLASSES 25 ORGANIZATIONS 67 ACTIVITIES 83 ATHLETICS 99 ADVERTISERS 117 Wayne Chamberlain Danforth Foundation Award All School Leader HONOR STUDENTS Kevin Lowe All School Leader Jim Thorwegen S.A.R. DEDICATION We, the Annual Staff of 1971, welcome the opportunity to dedicate the Saukee Annual to Mr. Everett Franklin, who for several years was a janitor at Pittsfield High School. His friendly nature and willingness to help students won him the respect and admiration of the entire Pittsfield High School body and faculty. By his sincere interest in the welfare of the students, he has won for himself a lasting place in the hearts of those with whom he was associated. He was never too busy to give of his time and efforts in any way to help students who asked for his assistance. So it is with the deepest pleasure that we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Franklin, a dependable, hard working janitor and a true friend of all Pittsfield High Students. 5 Manal, Beirut, Lebanon may seem so far away but you have made it seem so close. I realize now how alike people are but yet so different. One night I walked in the door and Mother said to me, “Manal is in Pleasant Hill,” Well, that was September 20th and now you are leaving a home in America for another. Just stop and think about all the friends you’ve made and things you’ve done. I’ll bet you’ll never forget Saukees and when you were elected homecoming attendant. And, how could you forget all of those many speeches you made? Do you remember Pike Youth International and when you learned to skate? One of your greatest thrills was when Khamis, your father paid us a visit. Have you been to any demonstrations lately? Your trip to Washington, D.C. was exciting! And if you don’t remember names, I know you will remember their faces and in years to come remember we are all people very much alike and help everyone to see how small the world really is. --Peace-- Susan 6 ANNUAL STAFF FIRST ROW: Susan Barton, Editor: Barbara Edmonds, Diane Stauffer, Vickie Smith, Assistant Editor; Mrs. Durall, Advisor SECOND ROW: Evelyn McDonald. We hope we have succeeded in reliving with you many of the highlights of the school year. As you leaf through the pages, now and later, we hope you will recall the hard work and good times at P.H.S. We have tried to produce an annual this year that will bring many pleasant memories in the years to come. Without the help of many students this would have been impossible. I wish to thank the advisors, Mrs. Durall and Mr. Fesler, for all their patient help in organizing this Saukee Yearbook. Also, the Annual Staff, faculty, and those outside the staff for coming to my rescue with snapshots, ad sales, and many long hours of work some of you have done after school. We, the Annual Staff, hope the faculty and students enjoy the annual, and that it brings back many memories of P.H.S. It’s been our greatest year in high school. Our Senior Class officers of 1970-71 were Kevin Lowe, President; Gary Cox, Vice-President; Nita Stout, Secretary; David Chamberlain, Substitute Secretary; and Jerry Booth, Treasurer. To be gi n the year we sold magazines. Everyone was competing for high salesman. Eugene Myers was high salesman with Nita Stout running a close second. Our lovely Homecoming Queen was Debbie Roodhouse; she was crowned at the bonfire by Kevin Lowe. Queen attendants were Roberta Adrain, Pam Griggs, Wava Grimes Riley, Marcia Bergman, Cindy Smithers, and Manal Kumbargi. We had a great group of concession-stand workers and candy salesman who helped to add to the treasury. The Seniors were represented very efficiently on the Student Council by Debbie Ghrist, President; with Becky Quiller, Wava Grimes Riley, Cindy Berry, Steve Phillips, Mike Wade, and Charlene Dickerson. We had four Senior Cheerleaders on the cheering squad who did an excellent job this year. They were Joan Richards, Marcia Bergman, Cindy Smithers, and Sandy Harshman. The D.A.R. and S.A.R. winners were Debbie Ghrist and Jim Thorwegan. It’s been a great year, one I’m sure we will remember for years. Best of luck to all the Seniors in whatever they may do the rest of their lives and never forget the class of 1971! What's the name of the song? Activities ‘‘Everything is Beautiful” our theme for our 1970-71 Homecoming proved to be very appropriate. The P.H.S. stage band provided entertainment before the formal crowning of the Queen. A bonfire was held on Thursday night following the formal crowning by co-captain Kevin Lowe. Kevin Lowe. Kevin crowned Debbie Roodhouse, Queen of the 1970 Homecoming. Her three runner-ups were Marcia Bergman, Roberta Adrain, Pam Griggs, and the Honorary Attendant was Terry Jones Jennings. Some of the players and Coach Pollard then talked about the next night’s game at the bonfire after the formal crowning. Friday was Casual Day and another day full of Homecoming activities before the game that evening. Since it rained all day, the pep rally was canceled up town and the students participated in the pep rally in the gym. Even though rainy weather prevailed, our Saukees Indians sent the Rush-ville Rockets into orbit with a score of 69-0. Prior to the game a parade of floats were paraded around the football field before the excited Saukee fans. Our Homecoming dance was held on Saturday night in the gym. The highlight of the evening came when Queen Debbie and her court were presented to many students and alumni present. Step HIGH, girls! Oh that HEAT! What do you have to add. MEN? Shake um good I crown you Queen Debbie Quit bragging. I’m embarrassed! What a BONFIRE! What’uh you looking at. Mike What's down the line. Tom? Richardson’s play tells the comic and tragic story of the Witch-boy John who saw Barbara Allen and fell in love with her. He persuades the Conjur Woman to change him to a human. He accepts the hardship and heartache of humanity so that he may have the love of Barbara. They are married; and when their first child is a witch the ignorance and superstition of the mountain people force Barbara to be unfaithful to her husband, and John becomes a witch again as Barbara dies. Lee enjoyed a long run on Boardway before being made into a fine movie. Auntie Marne is a hilarious comedy which pokes fun at hypocrisy and phoniness and teaches that life is to be lived to its fullest. Windows must be open wide to let in the air of excitement and zest for life. Those who attempt to stifle life are the only villains in Auntie Marne’s world. Auntie Marne’s world is peopled with delightful and amusing characters such as the stuffy Upsons, the drippy Southern beaux and belles who think they are charac-ters in Gone With the Wind and the English actress from Pittsburgh. But Auntie Marne herself is the most delightful of them all. Marne says, “Life is a banquet and most poor slobs are starving to death.” Why I'm your Auntie Mame! Oh this house work. An enormous golden sun with a hot pink heart-shaped center served as the queen’s throne. Our queen was Ruth Ann Cooper and her attendants were Susan Smith, Shelley Dively, Theresa Ervin and Molly Miller. A mysterious, dark mountain served as the entrance. The colorful rainbow rose behind the sun and disappeared into the mountain. The Whizzing Satellites played for both the formal and informal dances. At 2:00 a.m. the movie “Not With My Wife, You Don’t” was shown and thus, “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows” ended a beautiful success. 97 Athletics SAUKEES RANK 2ND IN STATE POLL FIRST ROW: Rick McCartney.
