Chung Ki works on prom. The P.H.S. foreign exchange student for the 1967-68 school year was Chung Ki Kim from Seoul, Korea. He stayed with the Earl Beattie family. Chung Ki had a busy year. As a senior he was in People to People, on the lights committee for the plays, on student council, the baseball team, and basketball manager. Out of school he liked to play the guitar, paint, and read. Chung Ki lives with his parents, grandparents, two brothers, and two sisters. He plans to attend college in the United States. On Student Council we had six very efficient Juniors, Karen Ghrist; who was also elected Vice-President, Tom Casteel; a third-year member, and Yvonne Voelker, Jody Iftner, Elizabeth Caughlan, and Scott Smith, all first-year members. Mary Phillips and Marteena Benjamin were our class attendants to the “67” Homecoming. Of the entire Junior class, Teresa Bergman and Phil Borrowman were voted to receive our 1967-68 Junior class citizenship awards. February was the month for the presentation of the Thespians and Junior class play. It was entitled, “The Rainmaker.” In its cast of seven we had two Juniors, David Harmison and Joyce Lowry, both of which did outstanding jobs with their roles. May 3, 1968 was the time in which all of the labors that our class had been through in the past three years came into bloom. We presented our Junior-Senior Prom entitled, “Shangri-La.” Our Queen, Teresa Bergman was majestically crowned by Wally Groom with her lovely attendants, Carol Burrows, Yvonne Voelker, Mary Phillips, and Donna Troutwein escorted by Kenny Gerard, Drew Irick, Darrell Hittner, and Chung Ki Kim. All in all this has been a “Year to Remember” for the Junior class of ’67-’68. Russ Adams Helen Apps Mary Jane Baker Mike Bartlett Judy Beckenholdt 40 Karl Benjamin Teresa Bergman Thelma Blacketer J. The P.H.S. stage band and the National Thespian Society provided entertainment before the formal crowning of the Queen. After the entertainment George Roodhouse, co-captain of the football team, crowned Donna Thornton Queen of the 1967 Homecoming. Debbie Smithers was Maid of Honor and Vicki Lowry, 1967 Prom Queen, was Honorary Attendant. After the crowning the students lit the bonfire in the rain while the cheerleaders led everyone in some cheers. Some of the players and Coach Pollard then talked about the next night’s game. Each class had made a dummy or some other symbol and threw it in the fire. Friday was Casual Day and another day full of Homecoming activities before the game and dance that evening. The afternoon was started with an assembly at which the teachers put on a skit and the “Children’s Laughter” played a few songs. After the assembly the student body walked up town and had a very good pep meeting on the square. That evening was the Homecoming game against Beardstown. The fighting Saukees beat Beardstown 37-0. After the game the Homecoming Dance was held in the gym. At the dance there was the presentation of the Queen and her court. The theme of the dance was simply “Homecoming 1967.” Deloris cheers us on! Faculty enjoy Homecoming, too! We tamed them; but good!! Also working equally hard in the staging of this production was the Pittsfield High School Pit Band. The musical was presented November 15 for the high school and the junior high school audience, and November 16, 17, and 18, for the public. Each performance was enjoyed tremendously by all. One of the professional touches of this production was the beautiful and extensive scenery designed by Mrs. James A. Miles. There were around twenty scene changes in all, and each of them were made smoothly and quietly by members of the cast doubling as stage hands. Also mothers of cast members designed and made the beautiful costumes worn by the girls in the play. And the chairmen and their committees worked especially hard to make the performances as flawless as possible. All of these assets contributed greatly to the entire effectiveness of the play. After nine weeks of long and strenuous work, “The Unsinkablc Molly Brown” was ready to be presented to the audience. The leading roles in the musical were played by Peggy Williams as Molly Brown and David Harmison as “Lcadvilie” Johnny Brown. After the performances in Pittsfield a special invitation was received by the cast to present the musical in Hannibal, Missouri, the hometown of Molly. The cast readily accepted and presented their “command performance” in the Hannibal High School auditorium on December 29. The Hannibal audience greeted the performance with nothing but praise and appreciation. No one in the cast will ever forget such a rewarding and unusual experience. Much of the credit must be given to Mr. Robb, Mrs. Stauffer, Mr. Morehouse, Mrs, Hillebrenner, and Mrs. Miles. 64 Afternoon, Reverend My Pa told me 65 “The Rainmaker” H. C. Curry . . . Richard Nash’s comcdy-drama-fantasy “The Rainmaker” was the second all-school production presented by the National Thespian Society and the Junior Class on February 22 and 24 for the public and February 23 for the high school audience. The story was a tale that centered around the Curry family—H. C., the father, played by Steve Grote, was a man on the verge of losing his dreams of life and fought desperately to hold on to them; Noah, the older brother, portrayed by N.D. Harrison, was a serious-minded and very practical person who had no dreams at all; Jimmy, the younger brother, played by John Schimmel, was one struggling for self-knowledge and was always afraid to stand up to his older brother in fear that he might find out his own feelings; and Lizzie, the daughter, portrayed by Joyce Lowry, was painfully afraid she was plain and would live to be an old maid. “The Rainmaker” was also the story of Bill Starbuck, a con-man full of charm and fast talk, who was played by David Harmison. He came into the Curry household to bring them their dreams and their hopes. He promised rain, but he brought much more. He brought them a belief in the beauty of life and faith in themselves. But Starbuck himself learned his own lesson because he was a failure. His dream was that he could bring rain, but he never had. That took faith. That was what “The Rainmaker” was about—Faith. 66 Having trouble, Noah? Think it will bring Rain? 67 “Inherit the Wind” April 25-27 Hello, Devil!! Larry Powell “INHERIT THE WIND” The events which occurred during the long, hot summer of 1925 in Dayton, Tenn., (Hillsboro, Tenn. in the play) were the basis of the play “Inherit the Wind”, the third all-school production presented by the National Thespian Society and the Senior class. “Inherit the Wind” was presented to the high school audience on the morning of April 25, and to the public audiences on the evenings of April 25, 26, and 27. The story of the play is as follows: To test the validity of a Tennessee law which forbade the teaching of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in schools, a young biology teacher, John T. Scopes (Bertram Cates in the play, portrayed by Jack DeWolf), was arrested and a test case was arranged. On one side of the case stood the forces of Fundamental religion and its greatest exponent, the Great Commoner, William Jennings Bryan, (Matthew Harrison Brady in the play, portrayed by David Harmison.) On the side of the defense stood the forces of science and the greatest trial lawyer of his day, Clarence Darrow, (Henry Drummond in the play, portrayed by Steve Grote). The trial is not, however, the only major point of the play. The love between Cates and Rachel Brown, portrayed by Rexan Dinsmore, is very important in “Inherit the Wind”. An interesting piece of staging was used in this play. A “stage” below the main stage was constructed and the courtroom scenes were played on the second stage. This was done so the town of Hillsboro could be seen at all times, which was constructed on the main stage. All in all the production of “Inherit the Wind” was a very successful and enjoyable one. Colonel Brady, what’s wrong?? Welcome to Hillsboro, Sir. 69 “Shangri-La” Jr.-Sr. Prom The Court 70 Mary Phillips, Yvonne Voelker, Carol Burrows, Donna Trautwein PROM On May 3, 1968, the Junior-Senior Prom was held in the gym. One could hardly help noticing the radiant hues of deep red and pink. As “The Storm” played soft music, the silhouetted attendants, Carol Burrows, Donna Trautwein, Mary Phillips, and Yvonne Voelker, met their escorts, Kenny Gerard, Chung Ki Kim, Darrel Hittner, and Drew Irick on the dance floor. Wally Groom then crowned Teresa Bergman 1967-68 Prom Queen.- Preceding Queen Teresa were a charming flower girl, Janice McGlasson, and her handsome escort and crown-bearer, Tommy Johnson. While looking about the oriental atmosphere, the artistic beauty was shown in the pagoda. The lovely murals along the walls showed black ladies on a pink background. The pale pink silhouettes of the four attendants blended harmoniously with the queen’s throne. The formal dance was followed by the informal dance beginning at 12:30 A.M. The Prom was quickly annihilated by the Seniors, while the sad Juniors watched close-by. The “Children’s Laughter” played until 2:00 A.M. The movie this year was Alfred Hitchcock’s “Torn Curtain”. Around 4:30 A.M. breakfast was served. The ’67-’68 Prom was indeed a “Shangri-La.” The Grand March 71 And Jon said . .. What a court! Jump high, Mr. Decker. Get this annual DONE! The hard-fighting Saukees had only 6 points scored against them during their winning campaign. This was quite a feat!! The Saukees won their Homecoming game with an impressive 37 to 0 triumph over Beardstown. This was the first year Pittsfield had a player participate in the Missouri-Illinois All Star game, and Mark Beattie represented us well. PHS BASKETBALL This year was a great year for basketball. The mighty Sauks racked up 23 wins against only 4 losses. With four returning starters from last year, the varsity squad had its feet on the ground from the very beginning. The boys had as their opponents two fine Chicago teams. The Saukees played their best and gave us a thrilling tournament at Jacksonville. Though the game with Crane Tech was a heartbreaker, we were very proud of our boys. They did an outstanding job!
