HAVENS (April 14, 1946 - April 6, 1964) An unforgettable friend I know Has left the earth, to heaven go. He's heaven bound for this I know: He's too good to go below. And with the passing of my friend. I'll not forget him in the end. For he's the kind of guy you see Whom I would follow and try to be. To me he’s been much more than a friend Like a big brother or next of kin. He's heaven bound, yes this I'm sure. He was good, kind hearted, and holy pure. 4 by Johnny Patterson English Department GLADYS HARPOLE - B.S. The play was the second all school musical in P. H. S. history, and was directed by Jon Robb, with musical direction by Paul Rosene, voice direction by Athene Schimmel, and dances by Marcia Hillebrenner. The cast of over forty was drawn from each of the four classes. The pit band numbered twenty-five. The auditorium was filled to capacity at both the high school and public performances. The leads in the play were taken by Joe Miller as Albert and Nancy Watson as Rosie. Mrs. Peterson, played by Miki Irving, shows Gloria Rasputin (Betsy Seiler) the technique of being a good secretary. Additional love interest is provided by Hugo and Kim (Maurice Neece and Linda Taylor), shown posing in front of the Sweet Apple station. Our version of Birdie required seventeen scene changes, all of them made within a few seconds. Most impressive of these were the jungle gym and several pieces of flying scenery. There were fifteen different songs, as well as numerous reprises, interludes, and intricate dances. Rosie is surrounded by the patrons of Maud's Bar and Grill. Maud (Jim Farrell) hums along behind the bar. The last television appearance by Birdie (Vic Hubbard) is marred by the antics of Mr. Macafee (Ron Johnson) which horrify Mrs. Macafee (Gloria Franklin). Juniors Present The Happiest Millionaire” The Junior class play, The Happiest Millionaire, was presented to adult audiences on January 30 and February 1, and to the High School on the afternoon of January 31. The cast, numbering fourteen, was directed by Mr. Robb. The play concerned the life Antony J. Drexel-Biddle, a non-conformist millionaire. The play is set in Philadelphia just before the first world war. The set was particularly impressive, and for the first time made use of half flats. What do you do when your girl turns down your proposal? If you are Angier Duke, you take her off anyway. Gloria Grigsby comes across well as the spicy-tongued Aunt Mary. Three photos show action (left to right). Father enjoys one of his favorite sports with Spike O'Malley. Mr. and Mrs. Biddle do a turn in the parlor. Cordy bestows a kiss on Angier. Seniors Present The play was guided by the Stage Manager, Ron Johnson. Thornton Wilder's classic play. Our Town was presented by the senior class April 24 and 25. The play was unusual in that it has no scenery and no props. A character called only the Stage Manager guided the play and interpreted it to the audience. The story concerned the love and marriage of two young people, George and Emily, and the subsequent death of Emily. The six weeks of rehearsal culminated in four performances. The play was directed by Jon Robb. Joe Miller, as Mr. Webb, gives the audience the social and political report. 62 rrOur Town Beverly Baughman, as Emily, looks at the moon from the second story of her house. The two lovers, George (Maurice Neese) and Emily bashfully discuss Algebra. George and Emily's love affair comes to a happy climax in the wedding scene. Queen Sandra Homecoming 1963 Homecoming, 1963, got off to a rousing start on Thursday, October 24th as the cheerleaders led us in a spirited pep rally on the square. Big Chief Blackhawk, himself, was there to lead us in a war dance. Later that night, enthusiasm climbed as we met at our annual bonfire and watched the burning of the dummy, representing our Homecoming opponents - Beardstown. Friday night our spirits soared as we watched the Saukees roll over the Tigers with a score of 9 to 0. The really big moment came Saturday night as Bill Henderson, captain of the football team, crowned Sandra Spellman queen of the 1963 Homecoming. Patty Lynn Haun was maid of honor and Beverly Capps, 1963 Prom Queen, was honorary attendant. The football players served as escorts. The gym beautifully carried out the theme, Philippine Enchantment and Alfredo Llenes, our Filipino exchange student, topped the festive occasion with an authentic Philippine dance. 64 Lynn Hobbs Homecoming Attendants Christy Booth Carol Collver Patty Lynn Haun Beverly Capps Seniors Laurel Fulmer Dee Ann Fisher Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Nancy Watson Mary Richards Chris Webel Jill Curtis Nancy King Carolyn Barber 65 Left to right: Carolyn Barber, Larry Herrick, Nancy King, Steve Sealock, Jill Curtis, Dennis Dodd, Laurel Fulmer, Steve Claus, Carol Collver, Carl Schulman, Christy Booth, Carl Cunningham, Davis Pfieffer, Beverly Capps, Gina Frazier, Phoebe Wilson, Sandra Spellman, Bill Henderson, Rusty Pierson, Patty Haun, Chuck Lowry, Stan Boyd, Dee Ann Fisher, Bing Lowe, Lynn Hobbs, Jim Farrell, Nancy Watson, Dennis McCartney, Mary Richards, Greg Pressey, Chris Webel. i Royal Court of Philippine Enchantment CASUAL DAY PEP RALLY SAUKS GIVE WAR TALKS BIG CHIEF BLACKHAWK BURNING THE TIGERS AT THE BONFIRE TOUCHDOWN FOR SAUKEES! The gym looked like a beautiful picture as Mary Batz and Mike Dimmitt took their places on the throne to be crowned Queen and King of the 1964 Sweetheart Ball. Their royal attendants were as follows: Seniors: Becky Orrill and Don Wenneker Juniors: Shirley Philips and Bing Lowe Sophomores: Linda Ator and Larry Brokaw Freshmen: Carol Barton and Pat McCartney The Queen and King were crowned by Brenda Gamer, vice-president of FHA, and Kent Baker, secretary of FFA. 68 Sweetheart Ball Royalty Left to right: Brenda Gardner, Larry Brokaw, Linda Ator, Don Wenneker, Becky Orrill, King Mike Dimmitt, Queen Mary Batz, Shirley Phillips, Bing Lowe, Carol Barton, Pat McCartney, Kent Baker. The First Dance by the Court Queen Jane Juniors Say ' Bon Voyage” to Seniors On Friday, May 15, it was as if a miracle had taken place. After hours of hard work, the gym was finished! The theme Bon Voyage was gaily carried out in the nautical colors; red, white, and blue. The front of the gym had been turned into the huge side of a ship, made of chicken wire and stuffed with about 100, 000 napkins, and was ascended into by a huge ramp, complete with red carpet. The water around the ship helped create the effect of our ocean-going vessel. Colored lights helped to brighten the scene which was complete with a huge crow's nest for Robert Sassen-burger's Band and the nautical throne for our queen. 70 Miss Jane Kraybill was crowned Queen of the 1964 Jr.-Sr. Prom by her escort Bing Lowe. The court consisted of Caren Collver, escorted by Stan Boyd; Shirley Phillips, escorted by Dick Biddle; Susan Sloan, escorted by Dennis McCartney; and Nancy Watson, escorted by Gary Wilder. At 11:30, after changing, the Jr. class held an after-Prom dance; then followed two movies, Gidget and Because They're Young. At 5;00 a.m. after being served breakfast in the cafeteria, everyone, tired but happy, stumbled home, never to forget the 1964 Prom. The Service Formed A.F.S. hopes to continue this project through the Student Council. Pittsfield's Foreign Exchange Student was Alfredo Llenes from Cebu City in the Philippines. Fred has had a wonderful time living here and will never forget all the friends he has made. National Honor Society One of the greatest honors in high school is to be elected to the National Honor Society. The sponsor is Mr. Robb and the organization is made up of people who are interested in acting. Members of Thespians along with other students presented the musical Bye Bye Birdie which proved to be a great success. Thespians also presented the junior class play The Happiest Millionaire. This play was a very good comedy. Members also participated in the senior class play Our Town. This year they traveled to St. Louis to see the play Ring Around the Moon. F.H.A. Has Busy Year The Pittsfield F.H.A. Chapter is composed of 59 members. Twenty of the fifty-nine members were initiated into the chapter in a formal ceremony in January. The Future Homemakers of America also held a Mother and Daughter Banquet in April, as one of the activities in F.H.A. week, sold cookbooks, sponsored, along with the F.F.A., the annual Sweetheart Ball in February, and climaxed the year's activities in May with a Style Show. The annual Sweetheart Ball was held the night of February tenth. The gym looked beautiful as Mary Batz and Mike Dimmit took their places on the throne to be crowned King and Queen of the 1964 Sweetheart Ball. Their royal attendants were as follows: Becky Orrill and Don Wenneker, seniors; Shirley Phillips and Bing Lowe, juniors; Linda Ator and Larry Brokaw, sophomores; and Carol Barton and Pat McCartney, freshmen. The King and Queen were crowned by Brenda Garner, vice-president of F. H. A., and Kent Baker, secretary of F.F.A. 78 Future Fanners The FFA Chapter again this year, as in the past years, has been very active in school and community projects. On a sectional basis our chapter has participated in every sponsored activity. This includes such contests as livestock judging, grain judging, landrise contest, production award contest, and the public speaking contest. The officers also attend the officer training school at Quincy, and enjoyed a meeting with the National FFA officers at the Moorman Manufacturing Plant in Quincy. On a chapter basis the Ag boys have conducted a Christmas card sale, a pest-killing contest and a garden seed sale. We have also co-sponsored the annual Sweetheart Ball with the FHA, and the chapter put on the annual parent-son FFA banquet at which Kent Slater, state FFA president, was the guest speaker. We will also help serve the FHA mother-daughter banquet for the FHA chapter. of America Our chapter has purchased equipment for the shop and classroom and has donated $50. 00 toward financing another foreign exchange student for our school. Our chapter has another distinction in that Mr. Fisher, our present Ag teacher, has contributed nineteen years in teaching the Agriculture department. This is a record in the Pittsfield Ag department, as the longest previous tenure was seventeen years. We understand that Mr. Fisher is resigning as Vocational Agriculture teacher and will in the future be employed as guidance counselor for the Pittsfield high school. The newspaper kept the students up to date on the activities of the organizations, classes, sports, and current events, as well as providing humorous features. The articles written by Fred Llenes, as well as the May edition dedicated exclusively to the seniors, were of special interest during the year. Of course, the next goal would be to receive a first or second sectional in order to continue on to state. November 15 all chorus students participated in the Pike County Choral Festival in Barry with choral students from seven other high schools. Mr. Henry Busch from MacMurray College was the guest conductor. The Girl's Chorus provided a number of musical selections for the Boy's Christmas assembly. All choral students went Christmas caroling to the elderly people. The Pittsfield Chorus presented seven soloists and four ensembles in the State Music Contest which was held in Pittsfield, March 14. The Pittsfield High School Concert Band began its 1963-64 year by participating in the Fall Festival parade. Under the leadership of Director Rosene, the Marching Band presented Half-Time Shows for all the home football games with Joe Miller and Bill Fields heading each presentation as Drum Majors. The Jerseyville Marching Band contest found Pittsfield winning second in marching and first in playing ability. Drum Major Fields received the Best Drum Major Trophy of the day. The Stage Band once again gave a fine performance in the all school musical - Bye, Bye Birdie. At the Christmas party the 93 members put on skits and presented Mr. Rosene with a fine desk set. This year the P.H.S. Music Department was fortunate to have a student teacher from Western Illinois University, Mr. Jerry Bunt, serve his internship with them. Everyone 'enjoyed working with Mr. Bunt and wishes him much success. The Highlight of the year was the Annual Spring Tour, April 2-4, as the Band presented Assembly programs to six high schools and one College, in Galesburg, Monmouth, Farmington and Illinois College. The Year's tour overnight stay was furnished by the gracious hospitality of the Farmington Band members families, and was a wonderful new experience meeting Band members from other towns. The closing event of a very busy year brought the Annual Spring Concert, with its awarding the John Philip Sousa Band Award to Band president and first cornetist, Gregg Carnes. An audience of over 500 gave the Concert Band a long standing ovation. The Band finished a very busy, but very enjoyable year, by marching in the Memorial Day Parade.
