CAVKBB 1963 I VOLU UE 25 Spcwfe 5 21 39 59 71 107 Twenty-five years ago the Saukee was created. Its purpose was, as it is now, to present a pictorial record of the events of the school year. These twenty-five books have preserved for each successive class the memories of a school year. The memories of one year are many, some happy—some not so happy. A book of this type is not to replace those mem- ories, but to refresh them with pictures. The Saukee staff has tried to improve the content of this book so that it will be more enjoyable to the reader in the future. We then respectfully submit this, the twenty-fifth issue of the Saukee, to the students and faculty of Pittsfield High school. CHARLES D. WARNER Acnvmes Elwood hangs the portrait of Harvey and himself, which was painted by Carolyn CaT-roll. Harvey, the story of Elwood P. Dowd and his pooka friend, is an ex-Broadway production that also appeared on T. V. Harvey was presented on April 26 and 27 by a cast of 13. Many of the cast members were old hands at dramatics, but there were a few newcomers, these were: Martha Shaw Marjorie Foster, Lonnie Watkins, Elizabeth Schimmel, Charles Buddy Beal, and Larry Bowman. Wlilv FVi t tyu ttxrfl As their first project of the year the National Thespian Society produced and presented the Broadway hit Pajama Game. Expenses and profits were split between the Thespian Society and the band. This was the first time at P.H.S. for a play that was open to all students. The turnout at tryouts was very good. Work on the play started immediately with a reading rehearsal. Then came singing, dancing, and acting rehearsals. Because of the way the play was written there were a great number of scene changes required. This was done by chorus members who doubled as stage hands. The final rehearsals were during and after Christmas vacation. As January 31 came around, the play was shaping up well; a controversy arose over certain parts of the play, but rehearsals went ahead on schedule. January 31 finally arrived; until curtain time the cast had not seen or heard how large the audience was. The opening night audience was the largest ever seen at any play—but the Saturday night audience was even larger. ’Ein, zwie, drei ..says Professor Vernon Hines in his world famous knife throwing act. QtuAmb Couactfi LocoJl flFQ Ckcbpt t This year the Student Council was left very busy. The most important project the Student Council accomplished was to organize a local American Field Service Chapter. This chapter sponsors foreign exchange students in the U. S. Next year P.H.S. will have a boy from the Philippines in its enrollment. The Student Council started the year out with Freshman Day. Following this was the annual Brunch for Pittsfield teachers. Homecoming activities were next. Hobo Day was held again. A parade was organized and floats were decorated. The dance was held in the gym the night after the game. The Student Council again sponsored the Food and Toy Drive. There were enough toys for 130 children. New evergreens purchased by the Student Council decorated the school building. At the Student Council dinner the 63-64 officers were installed. 40 FIRST ROW: Gary Wilder, Wayne Giger, Charlie Giger, John Litvan, Mike Dimmitt. NWS Adopts Now ChoptoA N ute This year the National Honor Society adopted the name of their sponsor, Lorena Bueker, for the name of their chapter. This name was chosen in appreciation of the time and effort she has so willingly donated to the assistance of young people. The Society sponsored a talent show and donated the money from this to the American Field Service. There were 35 new members inducted into the club this year. A bake sale was held in April. There was enough money made at this sale to purchase certificates to award to each member at the end of this year. In May a banquet was held at the Steak House with Neil Clark as guest speaker. The NHS also donated and packed cookies for the Student Council Toy and Food Drive. 42 FIRST ROW: Mr. Robb, Cheryll Gaffney, President; Sonja Beattie, Secretary; Ronald Johnson, Treasurer. Although the National Thespian Society started our third year with only nine members left from last year, we had our most successful year. Our biggest project was the production of the first all-school musical, THE PAJAMA GAME. The proceeds from this play brought a much needed spotlight and an electric saw. Because of the large cast of this production, our After the performance membership was boosted to 56. At the annual awards party, we presented a-wards for acting performances to four seniors, two juniors, one sophomore, and one freshman. Stan Ballinger received the best Thespian award. The Thespians look back at the 1962-1963 year with pride but look forward to next year with a large group and plenty of enthusiasm. 43 FIRST ROW: Peggy McComber, Lois Willard, Sheryl Shaw, Patty Witty. Headed by Drum majors Bill Fields and Joe Miller, the band received 2nd place in the highly competitive invitational marching band contest in Jersey-ville. Joe received the high honor of the award for the best drum major of all bands entered. Four home football half-time shows, the exciting Homecoming parade (in the rain), and the trip to Beardstown for the football game rounded out the fall season. The Black Band and the Red Band provided pep music for the many home basketball games. The annual Pops Concert by the concert and stage bands featured the superior-rated Clarinet Choir, directed by Roxy Fudge, student director. Then the Stage Band began the Dennis Knotts; FRENCH HORNS: Gary Dunham, Dan Brass, June Galloway, Head Librarian, Charlotte Fudge; CORNETS: Gregg Carnes, John Geisendorfer, Lyndle Offenbacker, David Bonnett, Ray Anderson, Larry Mays, Mike Collins, Norman Shaw, David Lacy, Roger Stephenson, Larry Sapp, John Glecker; BARITONE HORNS; David Jenkins, Eileen Ellis; TROMBONES: Dennis Whit-taker, Carl Shulman, Larry Brokaw, Robert Browning, Robert Clark, William Shotts, Beverly Grimes; RECORDING BASSES: Gary Allen; SOUSAPHONES: Richard Loyd, Bill Fields, Lynn Ator; STRING BASS: Vic Hubbard; PERCUSSION: Dennis Dodd, Jim Moore, Spencer Mink, Mike McGann; TYMPANI: Eric Peters; BELLS: Beverly Ov tUwS OivTOu o intensive rehearsals for the first all-school musical Pajama Game. The Concert Band then left on the Fourth Annual two day spring tour providing assembly programs for the high schools of Jerseyville, Litchfield (overnight stay in Decatur), Cerro Gordo, and Lamphier (Spring-field) to audiences totaling 4,000 students and teachers. The first professional recording was made of the concert band by the R.C.A. corporation. The 12 inch LP record was available to the Public. The spring concert featured the Sousa presentation to David Jenkins. Back to Marching Band for the Quincy All-American Parade and the Memorial Day parade completed a very busy and very successful school year. Mr. Pinkerton, sponsor; Linda Butler, activities editor; Cherryll Gaffney, ads and organizations editor; Chuck Warner, editor; Carl Seymour, assistant editor, Elizabeth Schimmel, sports editor. The Annual Staff this year was organized differently than it had been before. Usually the staff was composed of two editors; editor-in-chief and assistant editor, but this year we divided the book into five sections and assigned an editor to each one. This new system proved to be more efficient than the old one. This year's book marks 25 years of Saukees for Pittsfield. The annual was originally named the Hig-B until 1939 when it was changed to the Saukee. The staff has worked many hours during and after school to produce the 1963 Saukee, but they were worth it. A student teacher, Mr. Jack Westerfield, from Western Illinois University at Macomb, taught for twelve weeks. Also used this year was the Delineascope. With this the teacher can write any problem on a clear plastic sheet. Then the problem is projected onto the wall. The bug hunt in the various biology classes was the first field trip this year. It was a contest between groups in different classes to see who could find the most bugs on the football field. There was a little excitement in chemistry class when a student accidently caught the wastebasket on fire. It was quickly extinguished by an asbestos blanket. 63 JUDD WORLEY, B.S. Ed. For example, American history classes witnessed the choosing of a grand jury, held a conference with our county judge, Winthrop Anderson, and visited the jail. Civics classes visited a trial and, also, saw the grand jury being chosen. Through these visits they were shown the processes of the law. V. A. COLLINS, M.S.Ed. 65 ATHENE SCHIMMEL, B.S.
