These activities include collecting money for the Red Cross, assisting the blood-mobile, sending boxes to orphans in foreign countries and helping the Student Council's toy drive at Christmas time. The Junior Red Cross members take gifts at Christmas to nursing homes for the aged in Pittsfield and sing Christmas carols. A chili supper after the caroling usually makes the evening complete. This year the Junior Red Cross sent a box of cookies and candy to the State Tuberculosis Sanitarium to a P.H.S. boy who was a patient there. The Society initiated sixteen new members, bringing the total membership to twenty-six. The Society, attended two fine plays, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, at Illinois College and THE UNSINK-ABLE MOLLY BROWN at the American Theatre in St. Louis. Our largest project was in helping the Student Council's project to raise money to buy scenery and lighting equipment for our stage (which is now very well equipped). For our part, we presented three plays, HANGS OVER THY HEAD, HE DONE HER WRONG, and the outstanding and unusual one-act play THE LESSON. The Thespians have had a busy, exciting and profitable year. On March 23 and 24, Rachel Hamilton, Cherryll Gaffney, and Miss Harman attended the state convention held at Aurora. In the spring an evening meeting is held when teachers and parents may attend. The purpose of the Future Nurses’ Club is to bring together high school young people who are interested in careers in nursing and health in order............ ... to share their interests, ... to explore opportunities and requirements in these fields, ... to grow as individuals by working together and ... to learn about community life in which they will soon participate as informed citizens. The National.Charter is a national organization which any club can join if it can meet the standards set for organized clubs in higher schools. It is sponsored by the National League for Nursing. This year the Pittsfield High School Future Nurses'Club was admitted as a member of the National Charter. National Pins are earned on the basis of points. These points could be earned by going to meetings, working on committees, or any other help given toward the betterment of F.N.C. Future Nurse members were guests of honor at a dinner given by the Hospital Auxiliary and later toured the hospital. Money was raised by selling doughnuts at football games and selling sandwiches, pop, and dessert at the district speech contest. This money helped pay national dues. Mr. John Blake, the administrator of Illini Hospital, was a guest speaker at one meeting. He told how the hospital is run and explained the administration of the hospital. The FHA enrolled seventy-eight girls for membership this year. This is one of the largest enrollments they have had for many years. The first scheduled event of the year was the FHA Rally, which many of the girls attended and became acquainted with the club work. The first social affair was the square dance held with the FFA and Rural Youth. Since about fifty persons attended the affair, it was considered quite successful. The annual Sweetheart Ball, co-sponsored by the FHA and the FFA was one of the social highlights of the year. FHA'ers were proud of their hard work, when it was declared one of the best in years. The FHA girls look forward to the servingof the annual FFA parent-son banquet each year in February. They have been busy this year serving as waitresses as they have officiated at six large banquets. Ihey have been of service to the Red Cross by doing some office work at two different times. A very impressive candlelight initiation ceremony brought twenty-two new members into the chapter. This ceremony was followed by a program on the theme''Getting to Know Your Neighbors presented by the Grindheim Family, who had recently traveled in Norway. In April observance of National FHA week was climaxed with a different activity for each day. During an evening candlelight service in May the installation of officers was combined with a style show to present a fabulous program. „ . Sev,eral 5?f ?he members enjoyed a field trip to the Home Furnishing show in St. Louis, this exhibit displayed several rooms of furniture from all parts of the world and many different styles of American furniture. The highlight and final event of the 1961-62year was sending a delegate to the Illinois State FHA Leadership camp at Bloomington, Illinois. 66 APPS’ SUPER MARKET..................Clarksville Road GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION FIRST ROW: Sonia Beattie, Libby Brummel, Mrs. Chamberlain, Sponsor; Peggy Cummings, Peggy Hobbs.
