Student Council Buys New Juke Box During the school year of 1959-’60, the Student Council was the most active and worthwhile organization at P. H. S. Some of the more important events sponsored by the Student Council were Christmas Toy Drive, Homecoming festivities, March of Dimes Campaign, and Sock Hops. Members of the 'Student Council sponsored a drive to purchase a new juke box for the school sock-hops and informal activities. Several organizations in the school contributed various sums of money to add to the amount with which the Student Council started the drive. Every student in the school enjoyed the new records and the new juke box at numerous affairs. The Christmas Toy and Food Drive gave the students at P. H. S. the opportunity to give to others. This year enough food and toys were collected from the students to help thirteen families. Different clubs in the school helped repair the toys, and Student Council members distributed them. Each class selects its three Student Council representatives in the spring. Candidates must make a campaign speech before the members of his class before election takes place. Officers are selected by vote of the council. 52 FRANCES’ FLORAL SHOP ’’For The Finest In Flowers BACK ROW: Left to Right, Mary Houchins, Donna Douglass, Hally Grimes, Kay Willard, Phyillls Payne, Carole Atwood. The first thing they did was elect their officers: President, Janet Kelly; Vice President, Carole Criss; Historian, Dorothy Cockrum (later changed to Judy Hittner); Treasurer, Martha Webel; Parliamentarian, Martha Hamilton. Two Christmas programs were presented this year. One program which characterized Santa's last minute details before leaving for his long journey was humorously received by the Rotary Club. The PHS student body relaxed the few hours before being dismissed for Christmas vacation and enjoyed a program, Happy Holidays of 1959, presented by the Dramatics Club. Other activites included the following: Working as timekeepers and doorkeepers at the County Speech Contest; serving refreshments to participants and guests of the County Speech Contest; entertaining the T. B. Association with a radio quiz show skit; and presenting a one-act play at the awards assembly. The one-act play, ALONG CAME HARRIET, ended the activites of the year and very well exemplified the success of the year. To become a member of the Dramatics Club, one must participate in the speech contest or oe in either the Junior or Senior play. Learning To Do Doing To Learn Learning To Live Living To Serve The F.F.A. chapter has completed one of their most active years. The boys have participated in all sectional activities, and have done exceedingly well in most of them. In the Land-use Contest DON CAPPS received the highest individual score. In the Grain Judging Contest DEAN KNIPMEYER had a high individual score, also. EDWIN LEWIS w'as given recognition in the Livestock Judging Contest. One of the highlights of the year was our Parent-Son F.F.A. banquet, at which we had approximately 190parents, students, and guests. Our officers attended the State F.F.A. Convention, the Sectional Thirteen Leadership Training School, and plans are being made to attend the National Convention in Kansas City this summer. We shall never forget the many recreational activities enjoyed by all. Garden seeds were sold in order to make enough money to attend the Cardinal-Giants baseball game in St. Louis. We were co-sponsor of the Sweetheart Ball, and we also decorated a float for the Homecoming parade— then the rains came. The chapter enjoyed playing basketball, and won a donkey-ball game against the Winchester Chapter. In the sectional awards program our chapter received the highest number of awards won by any school. ESTILL ATOR participated in the sectional public speaking contest. A Safe Corn Harvest program was sponsored, and a radio program entitled Safety was presented. The annual Pest Control Contest was held, and the losing team treated the winning team to a chili supper. F.F.A. Land Judging Contest F.F.A. Christmas Card Salesmen. F. H. A. Members made marshmallow animals for the children at Christmas and baskets at Easter. This fall many members attended the District F.T.A. Convention in Springfield and the State F.T.A. Convention near Chicago. Early this fall the junior and senior members visited the grade schools, each visiting the grade in which she hoped to teach. A foreign student spoke at a potluck supper, which was one of the two night meetings held during the year. Badges were earned on the basis of points. These points could be earned by reading N.E.A. and I.E.A. magazines, working on committees, being an officer, having a high scholastic record and winning honors. The main purpose of the hall monitors is to see that an accurate attendance is kept. They must collect all absentee slips and run errands from the office and for teachers. This isn’t an easy job but the fun that is tied in with it makes up for the free period that is lost. After being a hall monitor, one can easily see why the school must be kept on such a strict schedule. 56 Congratulations STRAUSS’ BACK ROW: Larry Evenmeyer, Jim Scott, Philip McCa 1 lister, Weldon Lewis, Richard Dark, Allen Butler. The emblem for the jacket was originated and designed by Mr. Pippin, the adviser. The boys bought the jackets with the proceeds from selling house number plaques. Other activities of the club include repairing the many toys collected from the student body at Christmas time, making and selling picnic tables, and a local projects fair. Meetings were held twice a month to carryout the following goals: 1. To promote interest in industrial arts education. 2. To further develop interest in areas associated with arts. 3. To develop higher degree skills. 4. To provide wholesome individual and group recreation. 5. To promote school and community good will. Individual projects were exhibited at the regional and state fairs. One project out rated all others at the regional fair. Marching Band Time, Patience, and Hours oi Practice Bring Honors Great balls of fire, kids, who can control the enthusiasm of the music department this year? Why shouldn't our ego be inflated? .After all, Pittsfield High School's Concert Band was the only class B band to have the honor of receiving four Superior ratings from all the judges at state contest. We remember with pride the climax of our Spring Concert when the 1960 John Philip Sousa band award was presented to Phyllis Peters. For the past two years the John Philip Sousa band award has been presented to the most outstanding senior member of the band. The students who receive this award are chosen by the band members with the approval of Mr. Rosene and Mr. Heitholt. To make the Spring Concert complete Mary Me Hose, winner of 1959 JPS award, appeared as guest artist. Memories of the band performances are always reminiscent, for the high school band is a happy family of instrumentalists. These memories began with the Fall Festival Parade, the concert at the court house square, and the football Marching Band shows which offered everything from the traditional school letter, to the you-know-what tipping episode during the Halloween show. Time, patience, and hours of practice bring forth the Winter Pops concert, a tradition now. The audience was very appreciative of our lighter concert music, such as Peter Gunn. The Band Boosters expressed their sentiment when they presented the new band flag with 50 stars at the basketball game. In spite of getting fingers caught in car doors, lockers, etc. many of the solos and ensembles entered in music contest brought special recognition. We began practice for district band contest with a big bang — the furnace explosion! This might have been one of our liabilities but the rehearsals at Higbee proved fruitful. You can list the fun and excitement at Carson Motel, where we stayed overnight, among our assets. However you had better put that terrible rehearsal in the school at Mattoon on the morning before the contest on the page classified as bad debts expense! Bob Cawthon. On November 20th, the Junior Class presented their three-act comedy, Boarding House Reach. Wilbur, the thirteen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Maxwell, had wanted a bicycle for several years. All of his ingenious efforts failed in his attempt to persuade his parents to agree to the fact that he needed a bicycle. In order to obtain money, Wilbur and his friend, Hercules, rented the Maxwell's house. Having gone on a business trip, Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell knew nothing of their son's new brainstorm. The Maxwell's Aunt Mary was left to care for the children. Wilbur's sisters, Connie and Betty Lou, and Betty Lou's friend, Bernadine, became the victims of the plan he had put into operation. The Maxwells unexpectedly returned only to find every room in their house occupied with tenants. They found an assortment of people. There was the insurance agent, Mr. Potter; a Negro fighter and his wife, Herman and Roughouse Ruby; the bank robbers, Limpy and Nora McGuire; Lucy Burns, a walking encyclopedia; and Mrs. Mott, a little grey-haired lady who never spoke a word. The bank robbers framed Mr. Maxwell and he was taken to jail by Detective Connolly. Wilbur and Hercules squared themselves with the family by capturing the real bank robbers. Mr. Maxwell was then released from jail. When he arrived home, he received word that his important business transaction had gone through. At the conclusion of the play, Mr. Maxwell took Wilbur to buy a bicycle. Miss Bueker directed the play. Barbara Athey and Hallie Grimes were student directors. Jean Richards, Gloria Damon, Francis Gleckler, Rita Mitchell, and Suzanne Geiker were on the make-up committee. FIRST NATIONAL BANK - A Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned” On April 6 the senior class presented the broadway hit, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE and to quote Teddy Brewster it was ’’Just Bully.” Mortimer Brewster realizes that his Uncle Teddy, who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, is not mentally normal. However, when he learns that his dear, sweet old aunts, Abby and Martha, have been putting arsenic in the elderberry wine and serving it to lonely old gentlemen, he is mortified. The play becomes hilariously funny as Mortimer trysto keep this from Elaine, his fiancee’. Her father, Dr. Harper, does not approve of the marriage anyway and IF he ever discovered the situation! To complicate matters Mortimer's brother Jonathon, a desperate crim- — inal, and his friend Dr. Einstein come to visit and decide to stay. It Was Damp But — IT WAS GREAT! HOMECOMING, 59 got off to a rousing start on Thursday, October X, when the cheerleaders held a pep meeting on the football field. Later, they led the students in the traditional burning of the dummy representing the opposing team. (Christian Brothers) Friday morning the expressions at PHS matched the weather. It was raining! Floats on which many hours had been spent were dismantled, and the football game was postponed. However, the weather failed to dampen the students' anticipation for the dance. On Saturday night the really big moment arrived. Norris Richard, captain of the football team, had the honor of crowning Mary Jane Sparks Queen of the 1959 Homecoming. Suzanne Boyd was Maid of Honor and Estelene McKee, 1959 Prom Queen, was Honorary Attendant. The senior football players were escorts. Although the weather had played tricks on plans for this year's Homecoming, it didn't out smart the decorations used for the dance. Halloween decorations were used in the gym to carry out the theme, Holidays, which was selected for this year's Homecoming. Music was provided by the Hubert Saunders Orchestra from Mexico, Missouri. In spite of a light rain Friday evening, many fans turned out to see the Saukees bow to Christian Brothers 14-6. And so. Homecoming ended. The thrones were placed before a large red heart and to each side hung two silver cupids. Red and white crepe paper streamers adorned each end of the gym. Beth Priest and Bob Hammitt were crowned Queen and King by representing officers from the F.H.A. and the F.A.A. Attendants to the King and Queen were Libby Brummel and Danny Hayden, freshmen; Judy Hammitt and Raymond Scott, sophomores; Janet McMakin and Kent Curless, juniors; Barbara Allen and John Shue, seniors. The gym had been beautifully converted into a heaven or roses and summer scenes. The white ceiling was colored by rotating lights and the sides of the gym were covered with pastel shades of crepe paper. Pictures were taken beside a water fall surrounded by ferns and grass. Colored lights were again used to brighten the scene. The orchestra, The John Howard Trio, was seated on a bandstand decorated with blue and lavender for the Queen was crowned in front of a background of rose and white napkins forming the words Summer Place. Her court consisted of Marie Capps, escorted by David Awbrey and Dena Hayden, escorted by Steve Gay. At 12:15 a.m., everyone assembled in the auditorium where the movies Battle Cry and The Thing were shown. Afterward, the parents of juniors served breakfast in the cafeteria. Teamwork. Accurate Shooting, and Skillful Bail Handling Leads Saukees To Victorious Season The Saukees racked up a tremendous record of 27 wins and only 3 losses. Having had previous experience, the three returning lettermen were a great help to the team and Coach Toby Smith, in his first year at P.H.S. Coach Smith pursued the task of selecting the first five from the many fine athletes who participated in basketball this season. This group proved themselves adequate by displaying good teamwork. Along with the wins of the regularly scheduled games came four tournament trophies. The Saukees won first place in the Mark Twain Tournament, the Midwest Tournament, and the Regional Tournament. Another trophy was awarded the team when they received the Midwest Conference Championship honors. In the first game of the Sectional Tournament of Macomb the Saukees overwhelmed the favored Quincy team in a thrilling game. In the championship game the weary Saukees lost their bid for the State tournament when they were defeated by a fine Monmouth team. All in all the Saukees had a wonderful season. Saukees Win Regional Pittsfield High has been blessed with a successful coaching staff during the past year in Toby Smith and James Hirsh. In baseball, the Saukees finished with a record of eleven victories and eight losses and to their credit came the District and Regional Championships. Coach Smith produced several ’’stars” in that each boy played for the benefit of the team and had the desire to win. We will miss our senior ballplayers, namely, Ernie Patton, Ken Higgins, Dan Baughman (who pitched the Saukees to their Regional Championship), Gary St. Gemme, and last, but not least, Tom Smith. We wish to our juniors and underclassmen coming up in the ranks the ability and prospect which we have enjoyed this season. Saukees Excel in Relays Along with baseball comes track, a sport which truly demands stamina from each participant. Coach Hirsh worked with the boys individually until a solid track team was developed. A boy then may excel in one feat and also another. Pittsfield High probably made their best showing in the Pike County and the Hannibal Relays. The injury of Dan Boyd was a great loss to the team but we expect to see him back with us next year. Among the graduating seniors of the team were Tom Brant, Gary Curtis, Leland Wahlgren, Jerry Jones, and Glenn Brooks, each of them lettering.
