Duane Lyman Secretary-Treasurer.......... Lowell Hubbard Sponsors . . . .Miss Blaeuer Mr. Brunberg It is our turn to say good-by. Good-by to you, old Pittsfield High. Four years have come, four years have gone. Now is the time we're moving on— Into the world, so big and cold. To struggle while we're growing old. On to college, on to work, To do our duty, but never shirk. Great success is to be our aim. We hope to win the world's acclaim. Some will be lawyers or soldiers brave. Or doctors, with many lives to save — Or nurses, merchants, tinkers, tailors. Or housewives, typists, bookkeepers, sailors. Some will win and some will not. Some will be good and some not so hot. Our successes will bring to you A feeling of pride and accomplishment, too. You will know you had a hand In making us part of the triumphant band. All our failures will make you sad. But we hope you'll remember us, good or bad. We'll never forget you, Pittsfield High. And we're feeling sad at saying good-by. December 9, 1 965 To Sheriff Duane Lyman Pike County, Illinois Dear Duane, Having heard of your national alarm about the escape of the notorious bank robbers. Bob Ghrist, Floyd Scranton and Lowell Hubbard with gun Moll Jean Sparks, I thought I had better tell you they are hiding out in New York in an old boarding house run by Ada Sittlerand Virginia Freed. I saw them the other day when they tried to steal the fabulous jewels of debutants Ann Seybold, Helen Ryan, and Dorothy Saylor. The debutants phoned theF.B.I. but the agents, Arthur Smith and Gene Zumwalt, couldn't shed much light on the case. Governor of NewYork, Norman Nobel, has taken drastic action to put an end to these criminals. That is about all I have to report on the case but Iwould like to tellyou howmuch lappreciate reading the county newspapers now published by Sue Hoover and Jim Rutledge with reporters Rosalie Willsey, Pauline Niccum, Gene Seybold, and J. W. Kane bringing in news of all descriptions. 1 see in the paper that Jack Ducey, Carl Benson, Bill Parks, and Lou Predmore have bought the Rancho and McCarters. I suppose they thought they could save a little money by doing this. I would sure like to see their floor show featuring chorus girls. Marge Swanson, Ann Williams, Jeannine Lowe, Ardith Payne, and Beverly Lee with C. W. Losch as featured juggler and Yo-Yo-advisor. teachers as Karolyn Beatty, Marilyn Carrothers, Katherine Sheppard, and Louella Dixon, whogives drum lessons. Norma Sloan is faculty advisor of the yearbook and Dick Wilson and Tony Roy are employed as janitor and handyman. In Coney Island I found Andy Chaplin and Lyndle Gratton who are owners of the Bowling Alley. They say they have such famous bowlers as Sherrill Aucoin, Jessie Winner, Betty Barrow, and Ona Garner. The pin boys are Junior Norton and Richard Ransom. On down the midway, I came upon the dazzling advertisement of Erm Brosie's Peep Show where Carol Loutzenhiser sells tickets and Leslie Garner announces the acts. They have such stars as Lois Doyle, Dorothy Ervin, Veda Willard and Pat Sanderson . Charles Butler and Roger Smith are the business managers with the former getting the most of the profits. Across the midway, Byrl Craigmiles and Betty Hull operate a hotdog stand with Thelma Ballard as the chief cook and bottle washer. Down in Philidelphia, Jobn Petty and Keith Smith have invented—of all things—flying duck decoys. Their publicity agents are Curtis Marshall and Gene Owens. Darrell Morton and Donald Dell are also inventors having invented television sets with built-in refreshment stands. Richard Lacy purchased the patent for the television shows so he could place Alice Reeder in the role of Ma Perkins. I understand that Ruth Ann Neese, Betty Taylor, Glenna Brokaw, and Audrey Howell caught themselves a man in the annual Sadie Hawkin's Day race in which Marlene Denton had previously caught two. I will close nowand let my secretary, Joyce Brickman, type this. I hope you catch the robbers. Best wishes. During this day the upper classmen got to rub lipstick and anything else on the freshmen. They made them shine shoes and button. In the afternoon there was a party held in the gym. The freshman boys had to wear dresses, hats and different kinds of shoes and socks. The freshman girls had to wear five braids, fifteen pincurls, a vegetable corsage, different kinds of socks and their dresses wrong side out and backwards. As the party got started, each freshman had to yell his or her name out to the whole student body. After the yelling was all over, there was a three legged race. The race was won by David Plattner and Wava Aiken. The prize they received was a candybar and the honor to butten ten times in front of the student body. After the contests were over, the upperclassmen served candybars and pop. Everybody had a fine time. 34 JAAIOR CLASS JOAN WILLIAMS Is one of the Junior girls who does indeed fit the specifications for a good citizen. Saukee Scoops is the voice of our school. The staff started off this year with a new idea, Pittsfield High School's paper published every two weeks. The members have worked hard to put out every edition to fulfill the students' idea of what they wanted to see in a school paper. Papers have been published every two weeks starting with the second week of last Sept. Improvements were made in each edition until finally the paper reached a peak when the staff could be proud of the paper they published. It is hoped that P.H.S. will keep working for a machine printed paper. Although Saukee Scoopers worked hard and long hours, they enjoyed having a little recreation on the side. They enjoyed a Christmas party at the Youth Center complete with gifts and refreshments. Participation in journalism contests in the Western II linois District proved thatP.H .S . has some good writers on the staff. Their work in selling subscriptions for the school paper provided them with funds for supporting their worthwhile organization. 40 LIBRflRH CLUB FRONT ROW: J. VanderStoep, C. Eagle, S. Planner, A. Another thing we did was to have a Christmas party at the Youth Center, along with the Dramatics Club and Annual Staff. A number of new books have been added to the library. We are hoping to finish the cataloging of a 11 books and the fi I ing of the I ibrary cards, so that students may find the books they wish to read. At the beginning of each period they have checked to see that the halls are cleared from paper carelessly thrown down by some of our students. They have run many errands during their respective periods and have stopped much loitering in the halls and at the lockers. We think that our 1950-1951 Hall Monitors have done an exceptionally fine piece of work. Get your bid in early for a Hall Monitor next year. ROW I: B. Taylor, 1. Edwards, B. Lee, R. Hall, D. We learn ways in which we can locate a customer or a prospective customer, create a customer's need for the merchandise and make the sale. During the year the members have become better acquainted with Roman life and customs through the reports and talks given at the meetings. They also learned several Latin songs, including Christmas carols which they sang in the , . Bob Litvan John Metternich Frances Daigh . Pat Paxton Frances Mahan High School assembly program. The Christmas party, which was held at the Home Economics house, was a great success and will long be remembered by all who attended. The main event of the year for the Latin Club was the annual Roman Banquet, which was held at the Home Economics house. 43 SITTING, LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Gleckler, J. Sparks, B. Phil Mink The Spanish Club held its first meeting in October and had its meetings every third Wednesday of each month during the class period. Our club was divided into groups which spent part of the time writing, learning, and presenting their own ideas completely in Spanish; no English was spoken during these days. The Spanish Club, with its newly elected patrons,Mr. Mrs. Jimmy Clark, had a gala Spanish party consisting of hot foods, pinato, games, and singing all in Spanish. At Christmas time the club participated in the program by singing the songs, Noche de Paz (Silent Night), Buenos Propositos ,(Good Intentions), La Cucaracha, (The Cockroach). During the year we enjoyed Spanish records of songs and stories. 44 CflmtRf) CLUB The Camera Club is one of the smallest organizations in school. Due to the lack of dark room space the membership is limited to fifteen students who are interested in taking and developing good pictures. The clubstarted thisschool year with a debt of some seventeen dol lars used to purchase our elementary equipment. With this equipment the club was able to produce pictures for sale. Enabling them to pay their debt and earn money toward more expense equipment. This equipment in turn will be used to set the club on a self-supporting basis. The Camera Club is a member of the Western Illinois Association, which is an organization of Camera Clubs in this area. Meetings are held once a month by the member schools for the purpose of ideas of the various clubs. Jim Rutledge serves as Treasurer of the Association. ROW i: D.Gray, S. Patterson, R. The three act comedy, under the direction of Miss Beuker, and with the help of the class sponsor Miss McGuire, kept the audience thoroughly entertained. To get the play off to an eventful start. Bob Morrison (Bill Brace) and Spiffy (Jr. Back;were chased into a health sanatorium by Officer Dugan (Rodney Sackett). Velma Matthews (Joan Williams), owner of the sanatorium, was threatened with losing it. In her old maidenish way, Clementina (Shirley Plattner), was madly in love with Professor Sockum (Bennie Newman) and she kept the young athletic instructor continually on his guard. Melindy (Carrie McCartney) with her Negro dialect and her knack for misunderstanding menus added many a laugh to the play. Archie Landis (Scott Smith), a rich friend of Bob Morrison's, was expected to save the sanatorium with his money but ran intodifficulties with his father and was unable to help. Dr. Peck (Lo-moine Reinhardt) added a complicated twist by being persuaded to change places with Bob Morrison in order to spend more time on his book. Dr. Thorpe (Bill Doyle) and his Jewish Lawyer, Moe Rosenbure (Jerry Crawford) tried to take the sanatorium away from Velma by means of trickery, but were caught in their scheme by Bob and friend Archie. Things really began happening when Rita Harborough (Joan Hubbard), Bianca Bachagalupa (Pat Gard), and Katrina Dumpelmeyer (Darlene Totsch) all appeared on the scene with the same purpose—marrying Dr. Peck. The success of the play was helped greatly by the student director Phil Mink, and those behind the scenes, Leila Crowder, Mildred Belford, Estill Gerard, Dale Dolbeare, Wayne Clark, Ardith Cox, and Imogene Edwards. The Junior Class netted $277 which will be used in decorating for the Jr.-Sr. Banquet. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Jim Rutledge . Joyce Brickman . C. W. Losch . . . . Ann Seybold . Karolyn Beatty Keith Smith . He has an Aunt Myra who is more of an invalid than he is—but she is rich. Aunt Myra's companion, Charlotte, is young and energetic and Rodney falls in love with her at sight. He overhears the conversation of his doctor about a fast fading plant in the doctor's greenhouse. He assumes that he is going to die soon so he resolves to do some things that he has always wanted to do. The fast action involves a gangster, and a girls'dormitory. However, Rodney does not die and finds himself in a dither because of his actions. Jodwillow, the butler, who has a chemical set, suddenly helps matters by putting all the individuals to sleep. Since some of the lower grades don't understand mysteries, a short play was given by some of the Seniors who didn't get in the Senior Play. 57 jumofi flno stmoR banquet The 1949-1950 Junior Senior Prom used The Stork Club as its theme. When the guests arrived, doors were opened by two Sophomore boys. Bill Brace and D. D. Petty. Upon entering the ballroom one saw decorations typical of the famous Stork Club in New York City. During dinner, entertainment was provided by C . A. Barber, Beverly Lee, Joyce Brick-man, and Norma Sloan. Bettie White, a Freshman, served as cigarette girl by giving each person candy cigarettes and match books which were sent to us by Mr. Sherman Bil-lingsly of New York. The address of the evening was given by Miss Helen Ruth Galloway. Before the dance, the crowning of the Queen took place. Ardith Payne was crowned Queen while Pauline Niccum and Bonita Springer were chosen as attendants. The crowning was followed by the Grand March. Music was furnished by Eddie Randal and his men. When the time came for those attending to depart, each person agreed that this prom was the best ever. Hats off! Here comes a parade! With twelve floats and spectators galore, the fifth annual Homecoming of P. H. S. was a roaring success. Each Third hour class decorated a float. November 17, the day of Homecoming, was chilly and it took plenty of hot coffee to keep the workers warm. That morning P. H. S. was as busy as a bee-hive and by two o'clock all the floats were ready to go, in spite of the trouble we'd had. That evening at the football game, spectators nearly froze. Even with two pair of socks they couldn't keep their feet warm. We won the game from Jerseyville, 18-6. Afterwards everyone came to the gym, which was beautifully decorated for the dance. Beverly Lee made a beautiful queen when she was crowned by the captain of the football team, John Petty. Her attendants were Janice Hoover and Catherine Cunningham, Freshmen; Patsy Paxton and Evelyn Buddemeyer, Sophomores; Joann Williams and Carrie McCartney, Juniors; Ermadel Brosie and Ardith Payne, Seniors. These girls were escorted by senior members of the football team. Crown-bearer for the queen was Keenan Barber and her train-bearers were little Judith Ellis and Ann Kraybill. Charlie Brown's orchestra furnished the music. Everyone enjoyed the entire day, and went home tired and happy around (?) o'clock. 60 I op ro bottom: I. Home Ec. Queen's Float - 1st Prize 2. For opening of school the 5th was dated. On the 8th the Freshmen were initiated. With the 15th the football season had begun. But we didn't start with the first game won. Then came October's bright blue days. These we celebrated in many ways. With football games and assemblies, too, A special one by the Culver-Stockton crew. On the 13th the six weeks came to an end. But heartbreaks were forgotton by the Halloween Trends. Then came the cold bleak month of November, Where Homecoming should remain a burning ember. The 11th a Sadie Hawkins Party by the F. H. A. The 22nd gave Thanksgiving vacation at the close of the day. The basketball season was now well on its way. With a good team, too, if I might say. The 1st of December and another six weeks through. On the 9th the G. A. A. Sponsored a formal dance for you. The 21st, Christmas vacation brought school to a close. But the 2nd of January found us right on our toes. On the 18th and 19th were our semester exams. And our brain power seemed to be measured in Grams. No school on Lincoln's birthday the 12th of February, On the 17th the County Speech Contest at Barry. On the 24th in Barry was the District Speech Contest. Where two from our school were chosen as best. From February 26-March 2nd was the Regional Tourney, On March 3rd, to Pittsfield, for Play Day, many girls did journey. From March 7th to the 9th was Pittsfield's Sectional. On the 10th the Sectional Speech Contest in Monmouth proved attractional. The 16th the Vocal Contest was this year in Barry, The 23rd was Easter vacation and we did not tarry. On the 31st was the District Solo and Ensemble Contest, The 7th of April the District Music Contest which was not for jest. The 13th of April the County Festival of Bands, The 13th and 14th State Speech Contest not quite out of our hands. On the 20th of April was the Senior Class Play, Which everyone admitted was really ok. On the 26th was the County Track Meet, On the 27th the State Solo Contest that was hard to beat. The 28th was the State Music meet. May 3rd the Latin Club Banquet with good things to eat. The baseball season had been ushered in, A real good team whether we lose or win. The 4th of May was the Illinois Valley Track meet. The Junior-Senior Banquet on the 11th can't be beat. The District Track meet was held on the 12th of May, Then came Semester exams, and for some were not gay On the 27th Baccalaureate Service was held in the Gym, And for some, the future looked rather dim. On the 31st was Commencement and without too much sorrow. For now we knew we would be the strength of tomorrow. Phone 62 Best wishes class of 51 ELITE BEAUTY SHOP C.
