Mr. Reed L. Schmickle, Acting Chairman, Department of Art. Individual achievement is stressed in art classes. ART As a result of recent academic reorganization of the college, K.S.C. again has an art department distinguish- ed as such from other departments. For years, the de- partment continues in growth with the addition of one new faculty member and an increase of fifteen art maj- ors over last year. In addition to regular class activities, field trips to regional galleries and museums have added an extra dimension to the experiences of K.S.C. art students. Other stimulating extra curricular features of the year have been lectures by visiting artists and various ex- hibits in the art gallery of Whitesitt Hall.

Experimentation is vital to learning. The Biology Department offers baccalaureate de- gree programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Education. Majors are offered in Biology, General Science, Medical Tech- nology and the teaching of biology. Minors are offered in biology, general science, and health education. Master of science degrees are offered with an emphasis in Botany, Microbiology, and Zoology. A Master of Science in natural science is also available. Each year several students from KSC enter medical or dental schools after having completed a baccalau- reate degree in biology. The department also offers pre- professional training in forestry, nursing, osteopathy pharmacy and veterinary medicine. On campus the department has ten well-equipped laboratories with modern instrumentation and has sev- eral research areas for staff members and graduate students. Many students majoring in biology are given opportunities at both the graduate and undergraduate level to serve as laboratory assistants. Students find lab work beneficial. 29
