Students not preparing to teach must complete a definite sequence of courses in one of three areas of theoretical mathematics, statistics, or applied mathematics. Those specializing in statistics or applied math have the advantage of training in and experience with the LGP-30 and IBM-1620 digi- tal computers. There are presently 160 undergradu- ate students. The graduate program offers the degrees of Master of Arts or Master of Science and a sixth year program of specialist in Education. There are 30 students in the regular graduate program. In addition 75 high school teachers are enrolled for graduate study in mathematics in NSF In-Service Institute classes meeting each Saturday morning on campus or weekday evenings in Chanute or Shawnee Mission. The department has but recently moved into the new Yates Hall, which it shares with the Department of Physics. The offices are on the second floor, with classrooms on the first and second levels. The Com- puting Center in Yates Hall is a cooperative project with the Department of Business Administration. The staff consists of eleven regular members and five graduate assistants, with Dr. R. G. Smith as chair- man. In june, a mathematician whose major field of study is statistics will join the staff. The Kansas Alpha chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, a national honor society in mathematics with 66 chapters, is sponsored by the department. This was the third chapter of the organization, and three mem- bers of the department have held national oflices. For the past five years this department has coop- erated with the departments of biology, chemistry and physics in conducting NSF Summer Institutes for secondary school teachers of science and mathe- matics.
