Lang. And Lit. Sponsors Language in Action Conference The language and literature department includes the courses taught in English, foreign languages, journalism and speech. As general education re- quirements, each student receiving a degree takes a minimum of ll to 15 hours of composition, speech, and literature. Those taking a major in the language and literature department may have a major in Eng- lish, foreign languages, journalism, speech or a lan- guage and literature area major. Each year, the department sponsors a series of Book Lectures and a series of productions presented by the College Theater. It also holds a Language in Action Conference in the fall and one in the spring, which are attended by high school and junior college students and teachers. The clubs associated with the department are the Press Club and the Language and Literature Club. Departmental honorary fraternities are Pi Delta Ep- silon Qjournalismj, Pi Kappa Delta Qspeechj, Sigma Tau Delta QEnglishj and Theta Alpha Phi Qdra- maticsj. There are approximately 227 language and litera- ture majors. Thirty-one persons teach in the de- partment. Three of these are graduate assistants. Dr. Robertson Strawn is chairman of the department. SW. dmpgeweed A .Sfer Student teaching science in lab school i H ,af , 3:3539-. iw.f? 91, Education library provides reference and study 3, area. all-1 N Ed-Psych Prepares For NCATE Visitation This year, the education and psychology depart- ment continued to direct an educational program for all grades in Horace Mann Elementary School, the seventh through twelfth grades of College High School fthe laboratory schoolsj and the four years of college for the bachelor's degree, the Fifth year for the mast'r's degree and the sixth year for the Special- ist in Education degree. Department efforts were directed toward provision of better facilities in research and services in educa- tion. Improved offerings were made available- in psychology, guidance and counseling, special educa- tion and philosophy. A small animals laboratory for psychology, speech and reading clinics and a curricu- lum laboratory were- maintained and improved. Seven committees of faculty members met regu- larly throughout the year in preparation for an NCATE visitation team scheduled to be on the cam- pus during the 1964-65 school year. The committee concern was for possible improvements in teacher education at KSC and more specifically to qualify the institution for continued accreditation in teacher education on a national basis. Chairman of the department is Dr. Aaron YV. Harper.
