college mokes visible progress. . . Progress in higher education is not always as visible as it has been during the past year at Kansas State College of Pittsburg. With a large increase in enrollment, an increase in the size of the faculty, and the construction of two buildings and an addi- tion to another, it has become apparent that the for- mer 'cteachers collegei' is growing up. The Education building, a three-story brick struc- ture costing some S475,000, is to contain fourteen class rooms, twenty double offices, one main de- partment office, two conference rooms, one cur- riculum laboratory, one psychology laboratory, a research room, storage room, a faculty lounge, and a student lounge. The building, which is to be the location of the Education and Psychology depart- ment, will face south on Cleveland street, ninety- six feet north of the sidewalk, and will extend back for one hundred and twenty-five feet. The three-story, 3B700,000 addition to the Stu- dent Center will enable the Grill to hold a capacity of four hundred persons in comparison with the present eighty-five person capacity. The addition will also house more student offices and meeting rooms, additional cafeteria conveniences, a small ballroom, additional game areas, more small lounges and dining rooms, a browsing library, a music 'listening room, more entrances, and the Col- lege Book Store. The structure will extend sixty-six feet east of the present building and will bring the size of the Student Center to two hundred and thirty- six feet in length. The serious student housing problem of recent years will be somewhat reduced with the opening of Nation Hall. The four-story, 3450,000 dormi- tory will, upon completion, house one hundred and twenty-six women and is being constructed south of East Hall. The building is being named for Odella Nation, former College faculty member. ..... if e .....rse-t1 , .1-' ' A Q g i f Y! ' c ' ii 5 1 ff- if V,,. W Q' or ' 's r. .gn t EQ as ft'

This the staff of the 1961 KANZA has learned, if nothing else. To the students it must be a book of memories, it must be as accurate a record as pos- sible of a year of college life. To the faculty it must picture them as they appeared fifteen years ago, not as they appear now. To the parents it must portray their sons and daughters as studying con- stantly and looking very intelligent. To the pros- pective students it must depict college as a four-year party. And to the administration all this must be done within the budget. We of the staff have done our best to live up to most of these varied expectations, and we have added a few of our own. Like all yearbook staffs we wished to produce the ,biggest and best book in the collegels history. Whether or not we have suc- ceeded remains to be seen. Among the projects we undertook to broaden the scope of the KANZA, three stand out: individual pictures of virtually every faculty member, a new and enlarged ufeaturesw section, and the commem- oration of the Kansas Centennial. It was felt that the absence of the faculty from recent KANZAS was unfortunate and that since they are very much a part of the life of the college, they should be repre- sented in the college yearbook. The Hfeaturesn section was revived and enlarged in order to more accurately and more interestingly depict the progress of the year. It is our hope that this section will capture the events and the spirit of the past year. Finally, this is an historic year for the state of 6 Kansasqher one hundredth birthday. We felt that we should in some way pay tribute to the state and it was this feeling that brought about the division pages in this KANZA. The pictures are as varied as is Kansas. They portray everything from buf- falo, which still graze in some areas of the state, to the birthplace of Dwight D. Eisenhower, to an aerial view of the Kansas turnpike. We have com- bined these photographs in an attempt to depict the many aspects of Kansas, past and present. We hope that in our efforts to produce a year- book which will be meaningful to as many people as possible, we have included you.
