The girls were also able' to capture three honorable mentions at summer camp in Oklahoma before the beginning of the '64 sea- son. The cheerleaders, under the direction of Miss Helen Messenger, practice three times a Week and are in charge of various pep assemblies and proiects throughout the school year. During December, our school was host to debaters from twenty-six other schools tor the Mrs. Alma Moore Cross Examination Debate Tournament, the Eleventh Annual PHS Debate Tourney. Most debaters at PHS are members ot the National Forensic League, the only honorary society for high school speech students. Three senior debaters, Ken Hagman, Keith Wood, and Barbara Urankar, this year received the, Leagues highest degree. Some of their other activities include concerts for the public and the school system, marching in the College Homecoming parade, and tours to other schools in the four state area. The Dance Band entertained at the Talent Show, played for school dances, and made appearances for civic organizations throughout Pittsburg. This year, the P.H.S. Chamber Strings, the Madrigal Singers, the Clarinet Choir, and Brass Choir combined to present the first Ensemble Concert. The various ensembles, besides participating in concerts, perform for Baccalaureate and Commencement. The Girls' Vocal Ensemble, a new addition to the Music Department, and the Concert Choir sang for the P.H.S. student body at Christmas. In addition, the Madrigal Singers performed at the Talent Show, the Thanksgiving assembly, and for civic groups. Throughout the year, the F.H.A. undertakes many proiects, such as, the Annual Parents' Dinner and Doughnut sale. Sponsored by Mr. Ernest Nelson, programs em- phasizing many phases of science were planned for the bi-monthly Wednesday meetings. The group has completed experiments in teen- age smoking habits, dermal-optic perception, and radiation in milk. One of the years highlights was a field trip to the L. Russell Kelce Planetarium. Under the direction of Miss Helen Messen- ger, the seventeen girls will obtain American Red Cross certificates and emblems upon com- pletion of the eighteen hour course. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Charles Watt and Mr. Don Howey, the club has raised funds to purchase a motion picture camera to aid the coaches. The bulk of these funds has been raised by the Annual Lettermen -Faculty basketball game. In the fall the Lettermen's Club sponsors the Annual Hayrack Ride and sweat shirt sale. From these activities the club re- ceives its operating funds. Drama Club was created by ' students who are interested in the dra- matic arts and wish to improve their skills. A The organization, sponsored by Mrs. Ruth Bloomcamp, is active in all forms of dra- matics, including poetry, prose, humor- ous, and .dramatic interpretation, contest duet acting, and full-scale stage produc- tions. With student enioyment in mind, the Drama Club presented two programs re,- lated to the expression of dramatic inter- pretation. First was a poetry assembly to the student body during November 1964, a premiere tor this type of assembly at PHS. The day of basketball homecoming the club staged a pep skit entitled Julius Dragon, a take-off on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Some of the activities of these committees in- clude an all school mixer, a Mother-Daughter service, worship services during World Fellowship Week, and an Easter Program. Taught by Mrs. Flora Herrmann, the class not only typed copy, wrote feature stories, composed edi- torials, and compiled regular columns, but also proof- read and distributed the paper which was printed by the PHS Printing Department. The class had the opportunity to evaluate and compare other school papers and to gain experience in practical journalism. The 1965 Purple and White was pub- lished by the fifth hour Photography and Yearbook classes. This is the second year that yearbook has been offered as a class with credit. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Lee, the Photography Department has taken and processed the pictures which fill these pages. Members of the class re- corded on film everyday school life and photographed all school functions to make it possible for this book to present an accurate pageant of events. The Yearbook class, advised by Mrs. Marjory Sharp, planned the entire layout of the book, wrote the copy, and proc- essed the material in triplicate before sending all final pages to the publishers. The librarian, Mrs. Alma Klose and the student assistants, through processing books, shelve reading, vertical occupational, and au- thor files, and regular library circulation duties, work to create a friendly atmosphere and efficient library service for the students of P.H.S. Unusually creative bulletin board exhibits and display cabinets stress good reading habits among students.
