ECHA ICAL ART l One of the highlights of the open- ing of the fall semester was the comple- tion of the Mechanical Arts Building situated east of the stacliuin on the cam- pus. The election was arranged and supervised by Miss Waltz, stu- dvut vounc-il sponsur, and volunteer Studi-nt groups. Y?-1 HI-Y , Y-TEE E T ERTAIN N W STUDE Approximately 100 students and fac- ulty memhers gathered on Hutchinson Field for the annual Hi-Y and Y-Teen Mixer which opened the social program at PHS. Purpose of the mixer was to welcome the incoming sophomores and new students. Program for tho evening invluded games. contests. and a group sing. Refreshments of pop and doughnuts served by the host groups vompielvd an evening of good fei- lowship. Hosts greet their guests. The crowd gathered quivkly around the- rt-freslnnent tables. I' Q RALLIE T IR PEP Pep rallies. planned and presented by various clubs and homerooms assisted by the Cheerleaders and the Pep Band. stir enthusiasm before home football and basketball games. Skits have varied from mock games and TV shows to a funeral complete with corpse and mourners. Wvhen the weather was suitable, the cheerleaders frequently called,the student body to a rally on the front steps during the noon hour. The bon-fire and snake dance are traditional preparations for the Columbus-Pittsburg Coal Bucket game. 'wi Cheerleaders rouse the stu- '7 dent body to rally on the front steps at noon. RIETY HO REVEALS TALE T The music department discovers some talent each year in the variety show which they sponsor. The school is thoroughly can- vassed for acts to make up an evening of entertainment. Proceeds from the show help defray ex- penses of music groups which travel to con- tests and clinics during the year. Three senior girls present a pantomime. The parents and friends assembled in the audi- torium tor a short program of music by the high school choir and greetings from The American Le- gion. John Clark. Uragon Cap- tain, crowned the queen in appropriate cere- monies at halftime of the PHS-Columbus foot- ball game on Hutchinson Field. Escorts for the occasion were Robert Viets. president of the student councilg George Lampe. student council vice-president: and Gil- bert Viets, NFL president. Following the game, the Blue Notes fur- nished music for a dance which honored alumni and royalty. All arrangements for the homecoming fes- tivities were made by the student council under the direction of Miss Wialtz. The organization meets each Thursday during activity period either in its committee groups or in general assemhly. Programs for the year are varied. Those with religious emphasis include the recognition service for memhm-rs. a special Christmas program. and an all-school assemhly at Easter time. The cluh also cooperates with the college in ohse-rvance of religious emphasis week. Service to others is an important factor in the work of the group. The entire organization adopted TH! a cottage ol retarded children at the state hospital in Parsons. This project hegan in January and con- tinued until Feptemlmer. The girls made dolls and scraphooks which were distrilmuted to the children for Christmas. Social functions included the all-school mixer sponsored hy the lli-Y and the Y-Teens, a backward Christmas party. caroling. and the mother-daughter tea. Several money-making projects were conducted hy the finance committee. Purpose of the club is to create, maintain, and extend high standards of Chris- tian character throughout home, school, and com- munity. Chapter meetings are held each Thursday dur- ing the activity period. One meeting each month is reserved for a combined meeting of all groups. The Hi-Y organization with the Y-Teens spon- sor the annual all-school mixer in the fall. Other activities of the group include the Thanksgiving as- sembly for the entire student body. Local chapters also take part in the pre-legislative conference which is held at the college and the Model Legislature in Topeka. The chapters have one social function during the year. Robert Viets and Gilbert Viets took third place in the State National Forensic League Tournament. Bruno Jacob, secretary of the National Forensic League. presented the Pittsburg Senior High School a plaque for outstanding achievement in forensics. This national award was based on the record that PHS debaters had made during the last eight years. Dan J. Tewell, debate coach. was awarded a gold NFL key set with two diamonds. WHITE Instructor Under the direction of the State Board of Vocational Printing, the print shop provides instruction in press work, typesetting, and linotype operations. The department prints all school supplies, prepares pro- grams and tickets for school events, and advertises school functions with posters. Two newspapers-The Booster, a bi-weekly production and the Roosevelt Echo, a quarterly-are printed in the shop. Each homeroom elects a delegate who becomes a member of the organization. Members meet to learn the principles and work of the Red Cross. They take enrollment and publicity materials to their homerooms where each representative tries to enroll everyone in the Junior Red Cross and to collect a small donation from each one. The drive this year resulted in a substantial sum which was sent to the national organization.
