The main objective of the council is to cooperate with the administration and the student body in building a better and finer school. The officers are seleced in an all-school election held in September. These officers serve throughout the year. At the first of the year and again at mid-term members are assigned to various working committees. Regular meetings are held during activity period on Tuesday afternoon. Throughout the school year the council sponsors many important school activities including the election, Homecoming, Dragon Drag Day. and the publication of the student handbook. Huffman Elton Cline The Pittsburg Junior Academy of Science is affiliated with the Kansas State Senior Academy of Science which meets annually in the spring. This year the meeting will be held in Manhattan. All participating members pledge completion of some problem of research in the field of biological or physical science. This year PHS will have a team of twelve to compete with other Kansas high schools at the Manhattan convention. Last year's team won the second place trophy for the best rendition of its program, and third place for the best general display as a school. Their purpose is to create, maintain, and extend high standards of Christian character throughout the school and 4-onnnunity. The four chapters meet individually three tinies a nionth. and on the last Thursday of the month the groups have a general meeting. The club sent eight delegates to Topeka to the Model Legislature in December. At the pre-legislative conference Bill Hagnian, president of the New-Carlson Chapter, was chosen as nominee for Governor from this district. Other activities of the year included participation in district and regional con- ferences and attendance at Camp Wood. Q All girls enrolled in Senior High School are eligible for membership in the Girls' Athletic Association. Each girl is required to complete at least one swimming test and to pass a posture test during the year. Meetings are held during the sixth hour on Wednesdays when the girls compete in such sports as softball, volleyball, basketball, and swimming. Each member must work out points in organized and unorganized activities. The unorganized activities include hiking, skating, bowling, and tennis. This year's seniors have completed three years of football winning 23, losing 3, and tying one. Top performance of the season was a 34--0 defeat of the strong Parsons Vikings. Five Dragons-Bill Coughenour, Bob Remington, Louis Stroup, Bill Bolte, and Dick Jewell-were selected for the all-conference team. This was the second such honor for Bob Remington. Three members received all-state recognition: Bill Coughenour, Louis Stroup, and Bill Bolte. Of the twenty-seven lettermen, sixteen will graduate and eleven will return for next year's campaign. At the Kansas Relays the mile team won the event on Friday and was beaten out of first place by a fraction of an inch the follow- ing day in the special mile relay race. Nine Dragon tracksters took part in the state meet at Wichita. The finishing touch Was put on the season when the mile relay team set a new record of 3:30 at the Missouri Valley Amateur Union meet at Shawnee-Mission. The 880 yard relay crew won first place in their event at the meet also.
