Its prime function is to work with the administration and the student body in building a better and finer school. Some of the objectives sought and achieved are to furnish citizenship training, to give pupils an opportunity to participate in school activities, to promote better student- faculty relationships, to provide a forum for an expression of student opinion, to organize effectively for school activities, to improve attitude and behavior of students, to provide means for development of leadership qualities and to enjoy the opportunities given each member to share in the school service projects. In the fall and again at mid-term the Council is divided into committees-Activities, Social, Courtesy and Publicity. Each group is given definite assignments throughout the semester. The Council officers are chosen in the fall by the entire student body in an all-school election. These serve throughout the year. Pittsburg High School is proud of its Council and the fine work it is doing. It is one of the outstanding organizations on the campus. ----44 ffl. T reasurer The JUNIOR ACADEMY of SCIENCE is a volunteer organization composed of students who are interested in some special field of science. Any regularly enrolled student of the high school may become a member if he is willing to pursue to com- pletion some special project in the field of biological or physical science. From the membership a representative team is sent to the state convention to compete with other scientists over the state. This organization is sponsored by the Senior Academy of Science whose member- ship includes scientists and teachers of science within the state of Kansas. Pittsburg is now in possession of the silver loving cup which they have won for two consecutive years by taking first place honors in the General School Display at the state meeting. Delegates will go to the contests in Lawrence this year determined to win the cup for the third time in order that it may become the permanent property of this chapter. The club is divided into three groups. A different group meets each Monday eve- ning after school for dark room work, then on the fourth Monday the club meets in general session where topics of common interest are taken up. The students receive much help from the Eastman Kodak Company by way of instructional slides and salon prints and from professional photographers who appear as guest speakers from time to time. Contests are held throughout the year on subjects in keeping with the seasons. Prizes are awarded to the winners. A picture-taking picnic in the Spring is the main social event of the year. Jim Peters and Charles Peterman received honor- able mention. Success of the team is due largely to Head Coach Martin Rohde and his assistants, Jim Morey and Dick Miller. 1 The DRAGON B-TEAM played the heavi- est schedule in its history this season, playing eight contests-winning six and losing two. The B-teamers are all underclassmen and do a workmanlike job on the gridiron. They were one of the best defensive B-teams ever to he produced from P.H.S.
