Candidates were nominated by members of the football squad. Then on October 31 during the half of the Dragons game with Coffeyville she was crowned by Marvin White, Acting captain of the squad that night. The queen and her attendentl entered the field in convertables and, after driving around the track, were escortd to the platform by the President of the Student Council and 'two cheerleaders. One hundred thirty girls enjoyed the many varied Y-Teen activities this year: The eight committees, their sponsors, chairmen, and officers made this year one of success. ' ,i Six girls attended the annual Kansas district Y. W. C. A. conference held at Parsons. A minimum award was presented to the girls for the Pittsburg l organization. ted officers for the year were Mitzi Angwin Elec . , presidentg Helen Peterson, vice-presidcntg Marion Beaver, secretary, and Besty Thomas, treasurer. The social committee and chairman, Joan Greef. had charge of each party that members enjoyed. They were responsible for games, prizes, and refreshments. Money for these activities came from the finance committee and chairman, Betsy Thomas, These two groups met together with their sponsors, Miss Sara Stephens. Helen Peterson, membership chairman, had her committee go to work during the first few weeks of school to induce girls to joinf the organization. This committee is also in charge each year oi the drawing of names for the big-little sister 'celebration Their meetings were held in the room 'of their sponsor, Miss Jessie Bailey. Miss Bailey also was sponsor of the worship committee. This groupis held responsible each year for an Easter sumrice for the entire school body. Lois Grlifithe handled this committee as chairman. ' The program' committee, under the direction el Barbara Biddle, was responsible for the varied O 1 and unusual programs presented during the school year. Certain themes must be carried out at least once each year by various committees. Barbara and her able committee kept close check on these and saw that each committee had an assembly. They met with Miss Margaret Oliver, supervisor, as did the music committee. Norma Johnson, chair- man, not only taught her committee songs, but had her committeejeaching songs to other groups. This 'proved very helpful to the organization when a song fest was held. Appointed accompanists for thc com- mittee were Gussie Rouse and Diane Walker. Publicity .committeemen wrote. and presented several playlets to illustrate Y-teen themes. Post- ers were always ready by this group when needed tn advertise coming program or party. Members wrote a Y-Teen story for the Booster each week. They met with the service committee-during the year and chairmen Lois Rae Taylor and Donnn Ross, in the room of their sponsor, Miss Florence White. The service committee was in charge of many worth while projects. These included selling candy at athletic events, enc0uraging'pen pal correspond- ance, and donating to the organization, CARE. All these projects, although under the supervision of the service committeeg were aided by all members. Each and every ziil took part in at least. one'ns- . sembly for the year. Committees were assigned out.. We operated under the chapter plan, three in. dividual chapter meeting followed monthly by 2 general meeting' of all chapters together. Hi-Y pres- dents rotated in responsibility of leadership. Roosevelt Junior High, with three chapters, had for its sponsors Mr. George Frederiekson. Senior Hi-Y sold JIMMY WELCH CHAPTER Grandle, Bob Varner. Abington. . candy and Pop at football games, :md Y-Teens took A similar number of basketball games this year. Lakeside Junior High had th:-on chnpgers spon, sored by Mr. Wesley Cunningham, Mr. Jack Tryon, and Mr. Fred Lampton. Mr. John England, princi- pal of Lakeside was their advisor. Both Lakeside and Senior High sent a goody delega- tion to the'Girard district meeting in the Fall. In tha March 10'meetin.g at Parsons, Pittsburg was repre- sented by 17 boys and sponsors from junior and senior high groups. Mr. George Frederickson and Mr. John Biddle sponsored the Parsons all day session. Several social events of the year were held with Y-Teens. During the second week of school two hundred students enjoyed a Mixer held on Hutchin- son Field. In December the Hi-Y members honored Y.'l'eens with a party- in the gymnasium. Then later in the year tho Hi-Y members were guests of Y-Teens in a Spring Mixer. Some of the special programs during the year included a Thanksgiving Assembly with Rev. Harold R. Karnes of the United Presbyterian Church ns speaker. Music was furnished by the high school chorus. Y-Teens and Hi-Y met together in a special Christmas meeting nf carol simring. Including all games played, they won 18 while losing only 4. In the All S.E.K. team Story, Gibson, and White made the first team with McVickers on the second team and Thornberry in honorable mention. Gibson placed in honorable mention in All State. After winning the S.E.K. Championship, the Dragons defeated Ft. Scott and Parsons to win the AA Regional Tournament here in Pittsburg. Then they went to the State Tournament in Topeka. After defeating Ark City in a real thriller 39-37, they lost to the tall Newton Railroarlcrs 49-29.
