He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters, He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil: my cup runneth over. It is especially interesting for girls who belonged to Gul Scouts before entering high school. Each girl is expected to give two years service, therefore they are not accepted in. their senior year. The number of members is lim ited to thirty-six. The slogan of this grouo is Do a good turn daily and their motto is Be prepared Their most useful and efuitable promise is I will do my best at all times and under all circumstances to deserve thewname of Senior Service Scout. I shall try to be depend able, self-reliant, and unselfish. I want to be useful to my community and to my coun try, the United States of America. The elected officers for the present year were president, Anita Hilboldtg vice-president and song leader, Shirley Shermang secretary, Nancy Messengerg and treasurer, Ruth Ann Williamson. 'Ilheir services consist of aiding in the diet kitchen of the local hospital, serving at the servicemen's canteen, and assisting with younger Girl Scout troops. pf il Sr we H ,, A'- - X N Wy-',. gm v Xfeg C W'-2-iam .. ic , och 8 QA :+iffeff-M 4' M- 9 Presicgzgt Q, Joe Pregorto A ldentn o E sther G Sec race .-TreaLeW. s, ls W and Oro BY X555 YO YXQ-YW, Bobby Wlawer, Sorxoa Stot'vs,Woo10-a Sohnxkot, oor ge NXoCXore, Beaxmmo NXo6ax, Book KN ogos, Yung Y:XaoXiwm. These committees and their chairmen were as follows: Public and Private Property, Mary Lou Ellisg Law and Order, George McClureg and Social Welfare, Peg Cochran. The Student Council has participated in many school activities this year. At the meeting of the Kansas State Teachers' Association in November, they were in charge of the check room, and acted as ushers at all geyieral sessions. The Gold Star Flag was a project supervised by the Council. The annual Home-Coming program and dance was attended by a large number of alumni. For the first time, the Student Council conduct- ed. the advance sale of season tickets for the regional basketball tournament. Members also acted as assistants to the faculty and' oiiicials during the tournament. Spring ac- tivities included the Arbor Day program, the campus clean-up, and Sadie Hawkins Day. The Council assisted the Purple and White staff in conducting the Coronation Ball. Girl Reserves To find and give the best -this is the purpose of Girl Reserves. The motto is To face life squarely. G. R. is the only organization in high school which offers religion as one side of the three-sided' triangle which is the symbol of a Girl Reserve's life. The other two sides are mental and physical. Thelfirst activity of the year was a mixer on Hutchin- son Field for Girl Reserves and Hi-Y to become better ac- quainted. A big and Little Sister party was the next big event. This was to officially welcome new members. A Mother- Daughter Tea in May was an annual social afternoon which is looked forward to with much pleasure. At the beginning of the club year there is a recognition service for both old and new members. At the end of the year therd is a formal installation. Both of these are candle-light services. Several of the girls attended the district conference held in Girard. Girls were divided into groups for discussion. There were new interest groups organized this year. These were worship, program, social, service, and music. Many small parties were sponsored by thesef various groups on St. Pa.trick's Day, Hal- loween and other holidays. The code of Girl Reserves, if correctly executed, should express the foundation of a useful and' beautiful life to come. As a Girl Reserve I will try to be - Gracious in manner Impartial in judgment. Arthur Arm- strong Hi-Y M W War again made big inroads on our senior membership, yet Hi-Y carried out its program to the end.In spite of the war our senior Hi-Y had a total membership of over one hundred while junior high began with nineteen members. Hi-Y participated in the annual Girl Reserves-Hi-Y mixer, held on Hutchinson Field the second week of school, at which all girls and boys of school were guests. Some two hundred participated. Two presidents, Jim Conover and Howard Hallman, were, with Pittsburg sponsors, in charge of a Hi-Y breakfast at the City HY during the State Teachers' Convention and took part in the program.- Hi-Y sponsored the usual chapel Thanksgiving program for the school. Once a month they met in combined-chapter meetings with special program and speaker. Other meetings were held, by chapters, in separate groups, with discussion leaders in charge of programs. As nearly as possible, Hi-Y had two Bible Study, one World Brother- hood, and one Service meeting each regular month, with respective chair- men in charge. Usually, very fine discussions resulted. Hi-Y, as last year, was organized into, three chapters, each bearing dual names. We hope to return to the original six chapters following the war. The Bunny Carlson-David New Chapter was sponsored by Mr. Roy Stanton. Mr. Fred Lampton sponsored the Joe Dance-B.V..Edworthy Chap- ter, while Mr. Claude I. Huffman sponsored the J.L. Hutchinson-Jimmie Welch Chapter and served as chairman of sponsors. Mr. Richard Grubbs sponsored the Hi-Y candy sales and Roosevelt Junior Hi-Y. Our active Advisory Council consisted of Rev. Arthur Armstrong tpresi- dent Ministerial Alliance of cityj, Mr. Walter Lemon Clocal city Y J, Mr. Clyde Hartford ion present state Hi-Y staffj, Mr. J. L. Hutchinson iformer principali. and Mr. Finis Green lpresent principalj, serving as general chairman. Last year, Hi-Y was represented at Camp Wood, Elmdale, Kansas, by Bill Macheers, Jimmie Conover, and Paul Gilliland. If Camp continues, we hope to have delegates to the camp this year. Your Pittsburg senior and junior Hi-Y's contributed S100 to a. 320,000 General Improvement Fund for Camp Wood this year. We hope to see much benefit from this gift. Pittsburg chapters did not participate in the Chanute District conven- tion of local Hi-Y Clubs, held early in March because of our basketball tournament schedule interfering. Late last spring. just before the close of school, Girl Reserves and Hi-Y purchased the fine picture of Mr. J.L. Hutchinson,-now found opposite the main office to the south of the corridor. We feel proud of this project in honor of Mr. Hutchinson for the many years of service to the school as former principal. Inner Circle, carried on daily, with chapters rotating in responsibility of leadership, functioned well. In spite of the war's taking many of our members, we feel Hi-Y has had a fine year again. No school in Kansas other than Pittsburg High School holds a record of consecutive editions in their annuals. This year is the 46th such edi- tion of the Purple and White. The first one was compiled in the school year of 1899-1900. This book was co-edited by P. T. Ellis and Clyde Moore. Frcm 1900 to 1910 each annual was composed of a Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Commencement number. The purpose of the annual is to present a. record, especially for the graduating class, of the activities and accomplishments of that year. It has been an honored tradition to select a king and queen to reign over the Purple and White. Combination votes are received from the sale of annuals and the popular vote of the student body. The book is financed by contest sales and students. We had 204 towns- people the past year who subscribed for advertising by having their names in a list of Patrons. Some of the outstanding business men of Pittsburg who have been editors of the yearbook are Dr. Harold Rush, Dr. Glen Halliday, Troy Lane, and Edward Patterson. The annual is made by a student staff, chosen by faculty and principal for outstanding ability and achievement. Mrs. Peterson deserves the highest praise and honor for her untiring work the past twenty-one years.
