Rerurnees aid team by Cecelia Nichols With the help of 6 returning letterwomen, the varsity softball team was off to a good start. This year's squad is very strong, competltlve and wllling to learn, but above all each of them are fine athletes who have the right attitude to make It to the top of the DVAL, Coach James McClennan said. The competition among the league was just about even as most other teams also had players from last year. Sophomore, Lydia Stlgllch said, Although we are young, our youth ls on our side, as it opens the door for several more promising seasons. K: .. , Tracksters show ability by Regina Harrison Small in numbers but mighty tracksters showed ability and were favored as the DVAL champions. The team consisted of 37 in- dividuals with 26 returning Iettermen and letter women. This year's varsity squad showed strong ability in various events, Coach Phil Webb said. These events included the 400 meters, run by Robert Bennett and Tommy Jordan along with Donald Payne. Bennett and Al Banks ran the 200 meters. Varsity girls' team showed strength in the 100 meters run by Carla Lawson, while Regina Harrison and Teresa Curry ran the 200 meters. Curry dominated the 400 and 800 meters. Harrison also showed strength in the high jump. The FrashlSoph team showed promise also. The team worked hard this year preparing themselves for NCS and State Meet, added Webb. 1. xiii? mfg., Flannery I' ef Uff7S by Virginia Paganini Coach Dennis Flannery re- turned for his second year of coaching the JV softball team in addition to his job as director of Leisure Services in Pittsburg. Try-out practices were long and hard as the girls practiced running, throwing, and their positions from Monday through Friday, for about 1-V2-2 hours. I tried to work them hord In learning the fundamentals of the gome. We tried to be as successful, as possible, Flannery added. 19 girls tried out for the team, and only 13 made it.
