Varsity hopes for play offs by Shelley Doolittle Varsity baseball team had high expectations this season, and we'll probably make the play-offs, Coach John Abono, veteran of 4 years, said. Abono's assistant coaches were John Anello and Doug Partain. The three men worked together coaching for two hours every day after school. Abono added, All the returning players improved. He felt that all 9 returning players were extremely valuable to the team. Last year's team did very well. with an overall score of 12-0. Many players had to compete for positions. Competition for the pitching position included Lee Dongallo, Al Acuna, June Dones, Phil Layfield, and Prichard Gonzalez. Tom Nicolosi and June Dones competed for the short stop position. Outfielders competing were Craig Bellici, Richard Gonzalez and Mike Crespo. Abono's final decision was to have the players rotate. I ' ' JV s attract new players by Josette Gonzales and Patty LaCasse Improvement was the word to describe the JV baseball team because of the new members this year. Coach Herc Pardl felt that the team's most Improved players would be Gabriel Sollz, Bobby Johnson, Kevln Coston, and Andrew Alatoree. The more experienced players, Javler Ayala, Ed Bokinskie, and Donald Ray Hines, the leading hitter, asslssted the team wlth their suc- cesses. A pleasant surprlse was found In freshmen pitcher, Steve Orlando. Wlth two hard hours of practice each day, Pardl found It easy to make the team work hard to accomplish thelr goals. The team played Las Lomas and won 7-6. The toughest game of the pre-season was against Amador Valley. Unfortunately, Plttsburg lost 4-2. Pardl thought the sophomores would contribute to the varsity team next year. He sald, My primary goal ls to teach sound fundamentals and prepare players for varslty.
