Swim team fails by .Iennifer and Christina Puccio For 22 years Mr. Bill Sullenberger coached the swlm team, but this year will be his last. ln March, the Athletic Dlrector's Board declded Pittsburg High School would not compete in the dual meets, due to lack of swimmers on both the men and women's teams. The exceptlon was that lndlvidual swlm- mers could compete in the DVAL championships. Although there were 7 returning swlmmers, the 7 men and 6 women were not enough to flll even half of the events. To flll each swlm event, you need 15 swlmmers from each team. Every tlme you don't fill an event, the other team automatically gets points for a first, second and third place wIn, commented Sullenberger. Slnce all of the DVAL schools will flll all of their events, the Pirates could have never won a meet. That's what these klds are faced wlth, constantly losing, added Sullenberger. Unfortunately 9 lettermen, who were ellglble did not join the team. Nobody knows that ln the late '6O's and early '70's the girls' team was undefeated and the boys' team ranked second and thlrd in the DVAL Other schools have JV teams along with varslty. Now, we can't even flll a varslty team, added Sullenberger who retired his position this year as the swimming coach. 4 SWIMMING ,,,,,,f41 we 'WWUQQQQ 'Nz-,. GD

Numbers plague J V's by Colleen Parent The 2.0, no F rule, struck again to limit the number of wrestlers available for the JV squad. Coach J. T. Stone felt that the rule was a main factor in the lack of members for the team. There were 12 wrestlers and 13 weight classes. Therefore, many experienced wres- tlers wrestled out of their weight class to make way for others who were less experienced. Third year wrestler, Mike Tum- baga felt that the team possessed a good spirit. Spirit is very important because it builds up a psychological edge. Stone felt that the team had lived up to his expectations. To wrestle, you have to have athletic ability. Each member gets instructional time: l look for the mistakes and then help correct them. Because of the rule, Stone went to the junior high schools to scout talent. I had to sell wrestling because people don't know what it is all about. A lack of wrestlers also forced some varsity team members to drop down to compete for JV's from time to time. 1. Mlke Tumbaga scores a reversal against his opponent. 2. Alonzo Latlmore fights for a pin against Antioch. 3. Edgar Legarda struggles to regain control of the match, 4. Paul Doolittle studies Antioch's wrestling style before his march. 5. Sal Bruno struggles for a talre down. JUNIOR VARSITY WRESTLING Q
