Young JV team has pride by Michelle Axel The junior varsity Pirate basket- ball team, an extremely young group of ball players, played with potential and pride. Pride was a key characteristic possessed by every player. They showed It on the court by playing tough defenslve and offensive ball. The team displayed more in- dlvldual basketball than team work. but they were all dependent on one another. Even though they lacked expe- rlence, these young men showed great promise. Coach James McLenna sald, This is a big year for them. They are gaining experience, and this year they should place 1st or 2nd in the DUAL. The team conslsted of junlors, Alan Heggerbaum, Darnell Brown. Herman Johnson, and John Solis, and sophomores, Raymond Hackett, Don- ald Hlnes, Archle Thompson, William Ollver, Joe Silno, and Bobby White. 2.0 affects frosh team by Tina Soliz 25 freshmen tried out for the team but only 15 made it because the rest of the freshmen were ineligible because of the 2.0 rule. 10 students actually joined the team. However, Todd Mendoza was the only player who put the most effort In. He never missed a practice, was very aggressive, and always put In 1002 for the team, commented Coach Mark Lawrle. The team practiced from 3:00-5:30 and Lawrie worked them hard on defense, offense, specific plays and correcting their weak- nesses. The majority of their games were close.
