Teams play with spirit by Colleen Parent The young varsity and junior varlsty volleyball teams played with splrlt, despite their inexperience. One of coach Jean Neubarth's goals was to play as a team along with developing better skills. Their splrlt came to o peak when they won their only league match against Mt. Diablo. The team ended the season with a 1-13 league record. Second year varsity player Nina Trlas said, We played together and were organized but since we were a young team, there were arguments between players. The junlor varslty team had more success according to team member Veronica Partlda. Thelr league record tallied 4-9. We all worked together and supported each other. When that communication failed, our perfor- mance sIIpped. Trlas also felt that the hardest thing about their team was to accept mistakes and losses. Since we had a long string of losses, it lowered our team's esteem. 1. Varsity team: Front: M Peeler, K. Bostlclr, N. Trias: Back: J. Medelros, B. Martins, D. Dyer, L. Stlgllch, and M. Ogburn. 2. Pirr goes ro NCS by John Brooks After winning the DVAL title, the varsity hoopsters advanced to the North Coast SectIon's play offs. After Pitt demolished the DVAL and had taken everybody in sight, with the exception of one loss to Mt. Diablo, the Pirates went 18-1 in league play. When the second half came, Pitt had beaten Mt. Diablo 81-78 capturing the title for the third straight year, heading to the NCS play offs. ln the first round of the NCS play offs, the Pirate men played third ranked Amador Valley Dons, and beat them 77-65. Pittsburg's next opponent was Washington High Huskies. The Pirates won again, 62-61, in probably the most exciting game of the year. The mighty Pirates were Oakland Coliseum bound and were on a roll and hot. James Logan High, which had beaten Pitt the previous year in the play offs, were the next oppon- ents. Pltt played a close game throughout but lost 59-55. This was the game for the North Coast Sectional title. With PItt's surprising and great playing, they were voted as at- large-berth spot in the Nor Cal CIF play offs. They played Riordln Catholic High School of San Francisco, ranked 01 in Northern California and 1992 in the state. Pitt hung in throughout the game, until the final minutes, never giving up, but Riordln started to pull away and beat Pitt 64-55. Ray Bursey commented, We made It here, which is a lot further than anyone thought we would. 65 VARSITY BOYS' BASKEBALL CHAMPS PPP 'M is CD C23 'i Jlf Xl 4401 X g, N , . CQ
