l' ,I P l'? 'ri S I X . SN .f sn HBV , S2 ' las h, xg 1 Loss from a coin flip by John Brooks The Pirate varsity football team was eliminated from NCS playoffs from a little coin flip, heads or tails. Before regular season began, the Pirates were already ranked in the 3A Bay Area Prep Poll, top 10, by losing 7-6 to Tracy, beating 01 ranked El Cerrito 21-20, and losing to Christian Brothers, 34-28. Pitt was predicted to take the league with their 41 offense and 92 defense in the division. After Pitt defeated Ygnacio Valley, they clinched the league title and also o guaranteed playoff berth to NCS, even if they lost to Antioch. The day before the big game between Pitt and Antioch, news came out that they were not guaranteed a spot, and that the board suddenly changed the rules in determining who goes to the championships. Pitt lost to Antioch 18-6, so there was a three way tie for first, between Pitt, Antioch, and Northgate. As Pitt lost the coin flip, they were simply eliminated from post-season play. Defensive player Danny Arroyo said, It was heart breaking: it was like a nightmare come true, knowing that you were ranked 41 in the Bay Area at one time and just losing to Antioch, we lost our chance to go to the playoffs. 1. Head Coach Larry Rodriguez and Assistant back field coach, AI Bonanno contemplate the next ploy whlle team members watch, 2. Trent Scott runs for extra yardage against El Cerrito. 3. John Pardl blocks enabling Melvin Jackson to make a large gain. VARSITY FOOTBALL
