Majarerres win awards by Sherri Dallmann Majorettes attended camp at Santa Cruz during the summer and won a spirit stick, all superior ribbon, an excellent plaque, super superior awards, and each glrl earned the Miss Super Strutter award. To try out for majorette, the girls had to make up their own routines wlth no instructor and have 2 years of twlrllng practice. They had to know the basic twlrl and hop. Evette Castillo, head, Maybelline Mamaraldo, and Cynthia Sacos per- formed at the Walnut Festival, which was held In Walnut Creek, and the Columbus Day Parade here in Pittsburg. The majorettes stunned the audience at the Pltt-Antioch game with thelr performance. Mamaraldo commented, The best part of belng a majorette was going to comp, meeting new people, and partlclpatlng with the school splrlt. Flag rwirlers march by Tina Soliz Working malnly wlth the band, the flag girls felt fortunate when they had the opportunlty to perform at the rallies with the cheerleaders. Frankly, Rowena Hilado said, the flag glrls are excluded from many things the cheerleaders do. The squad attended camp at Santa Cruz and won a Superlor trophy, Spirit Stick twice and took one home, and an Excellent banner. Almost each girl recelved a Superlor ribbon in routine evaluatlon. Being a flag twlrler, also known as a flag girl, can be Interesting and even amusIng, sald Rowena Hllado. Hllado added that since this was her first year as a twlrler, it enabled her to learn to work wlth the others and support the school. 1.
