Marching band performs by Meredith Fike 49 marching band members, along with 8 flag twirlers and 3 majorettes brought spirit to football games and rallies. Mr. Orrin Cross, lll, band director for 12 years, was aided by Mr. Terry Valentine, a new performing arts teacher who remarked, l enjoyed the way they all worked together and showed leadership. Becky Walker, junior, became the first female drum major in many years, and Cross added, She did a fantastically strong job . . . The band participated in the Walnut Festival, losing the Walnut Award by merely half a point. They also performed at the first Columbus Day Parade. There was only one other band present and since they both marched in different styles, the prize money was divided by the only two entries. During the end of the perfor- mance, Walker, determined not to fall, quickly decided to go for the dramatic finale. With a last slip, l dove head first to dot the and was spread eagle in the mud. I had no idea where my baton was. But even with mud plastering me, I still had the self-satisfaction of doing a good job. 1. Candice Gracey, Karen Alexander, Theresa Davies, Mlml Coblseno, and Terry Owens mark time os they wait to go to their next position. 2. The band enjoys the football game as they wait for half-time to arrive. 3. Kelly Perce, Teri Nord Ake Crews, Stacey Castlgllone, Staci Moran, Stephanie McCants, Shelly Color, Llsa Nugent, and Candice Gracey get into their comfortable position os they do The Curly Shuffle. 4, Henry Castillo and Dave Hart march into position during one of the many holf-time shows. 5. Drum Mqor, marches off the field during the PittfAntioch half-time show. 6. Andrea Sutherland, Jon Jones, Ake Crews, and Kevin Williams wait for Robert Williams to light the torch at the mini-Olympics' half-time show. qlq MARCHING BAND

Majarerres win awards by Sherri Dallmann Majorettes attended camp at Santa Cruz during the summer and won a spirit stick, all superior ribbon, an excellent plaque, super superior awards, and each glrl earned the Miss Super Strutter award. To try out for majorette, the girls had to make up their own routines wlth no instructor and have 2 years of twlrllng practice. They had to know the basic twlrl and hop. Evette Castillo, head, Maybelline Mamaraldo, and Cynthia Sacos per- formed at the Walnut Festival, which was held In Walnut Creek, and the Columbus Day Parade here in Pittsburg. The majorettes stunned the audience at the Pltt-Antioch game with thelr performance. Mamaraldo commented, The best part of belng a majorette was going to comp, meeting new people, and partlclpatlng with the school splrlt.
