Only the top four teams of regular seasons play were eligible. Pittsburg and Clayton Valley emerged victorious and won a chance to play each other for the championship. The Pirates, with a brilliant second-half comeback, beat the tough Eagles and won the championship. For the third year in a row the Pirates were invited to the Gridley toumament and accepted the invitation. The Pirates placed two players on the first string All-Contra Costa Division Basketball team. They were Lionel Aldridge and Frank Cardinalli. Charles Lea was nominated for second-string honors. Little Pirates Are Champs Again It was number five for Coach Andy DeStefano and his HB' squad of basketballers. Yes, the little Pirates racked up their fifth championship in a row. The team lost the opener to Sacred Heart but then coasted to win the next 18 games and closed the season undefeated in league play. 1'his year's squad was truly sound in every phase of the game and was outstanding in their defensive game, said Coach DeStefano. The Pirates, toughest game was the first game with Antioch. The little Pirates had to come from behind in the final minutes to win it by two points. Several records were broken by this squad. The total rebound record of 856 was broken by a total of 899 rebounds. The individual game team record was 45.4 in 1956 and now is 47.3 rebounds per game. A defensive record per game of 29.1 was shattered to a low of 24.5 by this yearis squad. Dorris Oakley was chosen captain because of his all-round playing and the inspiration he gave to his teammates. The squad chose Sam Coston most valuable player.
