I I f' A 'IQ'- Twent -one ualqfy for Honora r The local chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta was granted a charter on November 3. l957. Xiu Alpha Theta is a national high school and junior college mathematics organization. To obtain a charter a school must offer at least three semesters of algebra. two semesters of geometrv. and one semester of more advanced mathe- matics. The school must also have at least one teacher. whose primary teaching field is mathematics with an undergraduate major in mathematics. Nlrs. Dorothy Shirley and Nlr. John Collin. advisors. meet these requirements. Nlembers are required to have had two years of college-preparatory mathematics and to be currentlv enrolled in another cf:liege-preparatory math course. They must have a H average or higher in math and a B average in other subjects. There are approximately twentv-one students who were eligible for membership in the organization. A. llruno. A. Nicol, R. Billeci, Romance Language Likes Banquets 1 v 1 v The Romance Language club, which is now in its fourth year, is divided into three different language groups: ltalian. Spanish, and Latin. In the first semester these three groups had 80 members. During the year each group sponsors a banquet. In October there was an informal picnic given to introduce all new members to members of the previous year. An Italian fihn was shown after the banquet. ln December the ltalian group gave a Christmas banquet. Later in the year the Spanish group gave a Spanish fiesta, and in Mav the Latin group gave a Roman banquet. The club also had a magazine drive in which the members solicited subscriptions to finance social affairs. LaFleur, Mr. Collin. 1 Newtonians Complete Third Year The aims of the Newtonians this year were to stimulate interest in science and mathematics and to help students understand their importance. This was the third year of the organization. Since so many students wanted to join, membership was limited to those with a B average. The club was under the sponsorship of Mr. Clarence Walden. Mr. John Collin. and Mrs. Dorothy Shirley.
