Doubles Membershzp The Future Teachers of America started its fourth year at PHS with thirty-six members, doubling last year's membership. The cluh is open to any student with a B-average interested in a teaching career. It is affiliated with the Pittsburg Education Association and. together with the P.E.A.. sponsors a scholarship for a senior who wishes to enter the teaching profession. Jan Nicoll. 58. received the first scholarship. Seniors in the club are allowed to practice teach at a local elementary school as a part of club activities. Miss Virginia llabey is the club advisor. First semester officers were Joyce Williamson. presidentg Joyce Clark, vice-president: Ruth Chism. secretaryg and Frances Billeci. treasurer. Joyce was re-elected president for the spring semester. Best in Many Years The choir this year consisted of fifty-one members and was under the direction of Mr. Philip Jones. During the year the choir was engaged in many activities. The first performance was in December at the parochial school, and in May they went to Stanford University for the State Festival. The choir sang at the annual Christmas assembly. This was Mr. Jones' thirteenth year as director. He said that this year was the best in many years. They did a great jobf' stated Mr. Jones, who was very much pleased with the group. Continues Scholarshqu Now in its eighth year. the local chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America was established in Pittsburg Sen- ior High School in l05l. The membership requirement is enrollment in one commercial class such as typing or short- hand. There are 35 active members. The purpose of this club is to help students understand the development of education in business and also to serve as a social business club. The club is under the supervision of Mrs. Rachel Sisson and Miss Carrie Belling. The club for the second year will offer a hundred-dollar scholarship to a graduating senior girl, helping her attend business college. Among other projects that the F.B.L.A. sponsored was an installation dinner and a trip to local in- dustries to get better understanding of business occupations. The social activities during the year were the annual dance and the year-end picnic.
