DR. CHARLES E. HAWORTH Edward J. Johnson, Edgar A. Poe, Donald G. Mitchell Superintendent Assistant Superintenrlents Greetings and congratulations to the graduating class of l'l5'J and to the staff of the 759 Piratel The theme of Wlihe Colden Years is an interesting one. for education can he likened unto gold in some ways. The henefits of education helong only to those who are willing to sacrifice and 'iligu for it. Some of the hest 'cgoldv lies deep and is not to he discovered hy those unwilling to scratch helow the surface. So it is with education. Cold has its intrinsic value. hut its greatest value is in what it will huy for its owner. Education is the golden key that will unlock the door of opportunity for each of you-hut only if you have worked hard and are prepared. The last thirty years have heen Hgolden yearsw of education in many respects. ln Pittsburg it covers almost the entire existence of our high school. and therefore stretches from the beginnings of the school on the second floor of the primary school to the wonderful school plant. now nearing completion. which you have attended. Even to those who attended ten years ago. and who now return to visit the school. these new additional huildings are so impressive that they feel you are indeed the fortunate generation. l know you must share that feeling. But historically the term 'golden agei' has been used to designate the highest point in the development of a nation. Vile trust that this meaning of the term will not he true when applied either nationally or locally. Vile are now engaged in a titanic struggle for world survival. Our success in that struggle may depend. to a great extent. upon the further improvement of our great puhlic educational system. ln this sense the 'fgolden years may well lie in the future. not in the past. Your part in that future has barely begun. Here in our schools you have had the opportunity to lay some of the groundwork for future success. We hope that you have used this opportunity to the utmost. Cordially. Dr. Charles E. Haworth City Superintendent of Schools THE GOVERN l NG BOARD 2 l M
