STERLING MacFARL.-KNE Administration Greets Seniors Each year Pittsburg senior high school is becoming more and more noted for its outstanding job of educating youth of high school age. The faculty of PHS is very much interested in helping each student to receive the best posible education. Each student should make every effort to make the most of his educational opportunities. Each year we talk to many graduates who regret the fact that they wasted time in high school that could have been spent in profitable study. Wie at Pittsburg senior high are very proud of the extent of student participation in school government. athletics. and all activities. We hope all students will participate in the government. athletics. and all social affairs of the school. Such participation is bound to add to your happiness at school and to your qualifications for adult life. l.et this book be one more reminder that education today is a must. l.et it remind you to ask yourself the question: 4'Am l making the most of my educational opportunities? CHARLES E. HAWORTH Edward J. Johnson, Edgar A. Poe, Donald G. Mitchell Superintendent Assistant Superintenrlents Greetings and congratulations to the graduating class of l'l5'J and to the staff of the 759 Piratel The theme of Wlihe Colden Years is an interesting one. for education can he likened unto gold in some ways. The henefits of education helong only to those who are willing to sacrifice and 'iligu for it. Some of the hest 'cgoldv lies deep and is not to he discovered hy those unwilling to scratch helow the surface. So it is with education. Cold has its intrinsic value. hut its greatest value is in what it will huy for its owner. Education is the golden key that will unlock the door of opportunity for each of you-hut only if you have worked hard and are prepared. The last thirty years have heen Hgolden yearsw of education in many respects. ln Pittsburg it covers almost the entire existence of our high school. and therefore stretches from the beginnings of the school on the second floor of the primary school to the wonderful school plant. now nearing completion. which you have attended. Even to those who attended ten years ago. and who now return to visit the school. these new additional huildings are so impressive that they feel you are indeed the fortunate generation. l know you must share that feeling. But historically the term 'golden agei' has been used to designate the highest point in the development of a nation. Vile trust that this meaning of the term will not he true when applied either nationally or locally. Vile are now engaged in a titanic struggle for world survival. Our success in that struggle may depend. to a great extent. upon the further improvement of our great puhlic educational system. ln this sense the 'fgolden years may well lie in the future. not in the past. Your part in that future has barely begun. Here in our schools you have had the opportunity to lay some of the groundwork for future success. We hope that you have used this opportunity to the utmost. Cordially. Dr. Charles E. Haworth City Superintendent of Schools THE GOVERN l NG BOARD 2 l M 1 . QQ, ., 'ffm' ' A R Mfg . The librarian. Mr. Tyson and Miss Baer. his assistant are most helpful. The library service class is organized to teach students the use of materials so that they may assist the librarians, teachers. and other students. Miss Olivia Hunsinger. director of health services for the Pittsburg Unified School District. has been most helpful this year working with Pittsburg high school students. The high school health unit not only serves PHS but is the central administrative office for the Department of Health Service in the district. Miss Barbara Barnes. staff nurse assigned to Pittsburg high school. develops and carries out the general health program. Working with only one goal in mind, the Pittsburg high school cafeteria workers try to satisfy both the faculty and the students. The cafeteria is not only used for brunch and lunch, but it is also used for school dances and clubs, faculty or civic banquets. Supervisor of Pittsburg school cafeterias is Mrs. Catherine Simson, who has been director of Pittsburg cafeterias for eight years. Head cook of the cafeteria is Mrs. Jewel Anderson. These two hard workers, their adult assistants, and student workers help to keep the cafeteria a place to be proud of. Left to right: Joe Crillo. Tom DiNIercurio, Shedo Lucido, Grace Buffo, Ratzi Bonanno, and Joe Sangimino. Working hard to keep the campus clean are six Pittsburg high school custodians. Their work - begins in the morning and ends long after the H students have left school. The Senior Patrol has helped to make their job a little easier. They work not only during school hours but also at night and during all vacations. Two hard workers are Ratzi Bonanno, head day custodian. and Tom DiMercurio, night cus- todian. Throughout the year students saw Ratzi and his assistants working efficiently with the result a clean and neat campus. Richard Seniors Recall Their Golden Year Our golden year has been filled with excitement. accomplishment. and disappointment for the class of '59 The lT0 seniors who are leaving PHS this year have worked hard to make the most of their final year in high school. X The football season started off with a bang with the Pirates defeating Mc-Clymonds of Oakland On October 10. the Pirates defeated Monterey in the annual Battle of the Cousins. However. to their disappt intment. the last game of the season. the Big Little Came with Antioch. ended in a l3-l3 tie. Though the football championship was lost. the season was yery exciting with the last rally being 4'These are your lives. Coaches Knap. DeStefano. and Berkichf' The skit was hilarious but sad as the seniors knew this would be their last Pirate football rally. Vince Darone became the fourth gridder in Pittsburg history to be named on the first team of the All-Northern Football Selections. He also won the Vieira Award. with Lionel Aldridge receiving the 4'fVIost Inspirational Playerl, award. After football. came basketball with the glorious defeat of the Panthers by a score of 38-35. The cheering section roared and trembled as the end of the game approached with a thrilling climax. The second semester brought the club's nominations for Miss Pirateer. with all the candidates waiting for the exciting announcement of the winner. For the seniors. time began to run out. and plans for the Senior Banquet began. When the Senior Ball and Ditch Day approached. one could hear talk of formals and food throughout the campus. While plans were being made. rumors were being heard that the Creative Arts building would be finished for graduation. This brought ohls and ahls from all seniors. As June l3 drew nearer. seniors began to wish they were sophomores. With the trading of pictures and the last days of school approaching. they could all look back on their golden year at PHS and realize that they were pre- pared to meet whatever lies ahead. f wr- Ht l'rwM ::1- fd Ilerxlfrfraq fl-- V- an RfAg Jfv1xfan havi- .5 i X ' I If l ffwzu I1 Knap. There is a great deal more work inyolyed in putting out an annual than 'most people realize. There is a variety of odd jobs which must be done such as cropping pictures. making layouts for various ads. and drawing posters for the promotion of the yearbook. Persons unaware of the job of editing a yearbook were amazed at the activity in Room 105. Some saw Diana Magri scurrying to the adminis- tration building for a scrapbook. Uthers saw Don Harris drawing the artwork for ads or Pete Hernandez sketching the primary school. Judy Caste-llotti. Elsie Macfarlane. and Bart Carlson were active drawing dum- mies or reading proof. Preparing the yearbook was not all work with no play, however. After the work was done. the staff could be seen eating hot dogs and candy. This of course was not until they had produced what they hope is a very fine yearbook. JOETTE MILANO MRS. C1335 Senior Editor Advisor V? This is a running sport although it differs from track a great deal. Cross-country is not a spectators' sport because the boys run on almost anything and everything, such as logs and hills, and their efforts are not obvious. The course varies. Sometimes the harriers run 2.1 miles and 1.7 miles. Their home course was the city golf course. Ray Kring introduced the sport in his first year at Pittsburg as coach. The team lost the opener to Sacred Heart but then coasted to win the next 18 games and closed the season undefeated in league play. 1'his year's squad was truly sound in every phase of the game and was outstanding in their defensive game, said Coach DeStefano. The Pirates, toughest game was the first game with Antioch. The little Pirates had to come from behind in the final minutes to win it by two points. Several records were broken by this squad. The total rebound record of 856 was broken by a total of 899 rebounds. The individual game team record was 45.4 in 1956 and now is 47.3 rebounds per game. A defensive record per game of 29.1 was shattered to a low of 24.5 by this yearis squad. Girls Learn, Home Care The homemaking department at Pittsburg tries to help girls learn how to operate and manage a home. The homemaking tear-hers are Nlrs. Eugenia Blum and Mrs. Ruth Carnill. There are seven areas studied in this program: housing, family and personal relationship, health, child care and guidance, clothing. and food nutrition. Classes study the seven areas during the three years of high school. progressing each year according to their level of achievement. The girls. however, decide what, when. and how each unit is to he studied to meet their needs and interests. An annual field trip is taken to San Francisco to enrich the girls' background in all areas. Mrs. Carnill's sixthaperiod home- making class. .,,, Z5 ? , rl tx.
