Wrestling Joins Sports Parade Coach Joe Berkich Frank Gutierrez Season Captain Entering the season tor the Hrst time in PHS history and winning three matches out ot seven was this year's wrestling team. Through the combined ettorts ot Coach Berkich, Dr. Charles E. Haworth and Charlie Zeno, Post-Dispatch sports editor, wrestling was introduced into the PHS sports program. Establishing prominent records in wrestling this year were Frank Gutierrez, winning the lO3-pound title and Carl Younger, who placed second in the ll4-pound class. Both qualified to represent Pittsburg at the North Coast Section ot the CIF wrestling tourna- ment at Menlo-Atherton in February. Jess Delgado won two tournaments. John McCoy took six out ot eight matches. Along with these boys, there is a good nucleus of boys coming back tor next year's team. To quality for coaching wrestling at PHS, Coach Joe Berkich attended West Virginia University, where he wrestled as a heavyweight from i950 to l952. Coach Berkich hopes that wrestling will grow to become one ot Pittsburg's top sports. He calls it, A terrific sport for terrific boys. Jess Delgado in power switch over Jahn McCoy. Baseball Entering the season with six returning lettermen including two of last year's All-county players, was the T958 varsity base- ball team. Returning lettermen were Anthony Aiello, Richard Zocchi, Frank Cardinale, Pete Roa, Anthony Barraco, and Leon Watkins. Barraco and Watkins were back from among last year's All-county players. When asked in mid March how this year's team shaped up, Coach Knap stated, The team looks pretty good. It we can get a couple of come-through performances by our pitcher candi- dates and not be hit by any more iniuries like those ot Barraco and Roo, we'll be all right. Diablo will be strong, although Las Coach Kmp Lomas will have the team. COGCI1 COUIQY This is Coach Tony Knap's ninth year as baseball coach. ln I952 the Pirates went through an undefeated season to be- come champs. ln i955 the Pirates also won the Shaugnessy Play- olTs, which consisted ot the four top teams of the league.
