Al Hurtado lays up the ball to register two points against the Dons as Lionel Aldridge stands by. Going high in the air for that all-important rebound in the Los Lomas game are John Nord, number 24, and Vince Darone. Second-place Winners With high leaps to the backboards, accurate shoot- ing, fast breaks, and a determination to win, the Pirate varsity basketball team came through with a season which is characteristic of Pittsburg. Placing second to Diablo high in league standings, Coach Thomason's var- sity won i5 to T7 league games. The team dropped one to Diablo before receiving a setback at the hands of Pleasant Hill high. John Nord, a returning letterman from last year, was elected most valuable player by his teammates as was Al Hurtado, a player up from last year's light- weight team, who was chosen season captain. Nord was named to the first-string All-county team elected by the various coaches ot the league. Second-string All-county honors went to Al Hurtado. Frank Cardinale, a junior, was named honorable-mention in All-county honors and also gained All-tourney recognition at this year's Gridley tournament. This was Pittsburg's second trip to the Gridley Tour- nament. ln T957 the Pirates took the tournament cham- pionship. This year the defending champs came up with a consolation trophy after first losing to El Cerrito and then downing Santa Cruz and Albany for consolation. ln seven years with the varsity, Coach Thomason has won three championships, three second places, and one third place.
