Coach Tony Knap This year the Pirates went through another highly successful season to win the DVAL championship for the ninth year in the ten years Coach Tony Knop has handled football here. The Pirates started the season by losing a hard-fought I2-6 game to the Monterey Toreadors. This loss broke Pittsburg's winning streak of I2 games. Serra was the first team to fall before the determined Pirates. With hard running and aggressive blocking, the Pirates came through with their first victory of 33-6 for the I957 season. Coached by former Pittsburg grid star, George Galli, the Pleasant Hill Rams proved harder to beat than the Pirates had anticipated. The Pirates walked off the field win- ners by 7 to 6 after a breathless second half. Crowds jammed the Acalanes field expecting to see one of the closest games of the season with the Dons favored. The Pirates started off with a blitz attack, surprising the Dons and resulting in a 26-7 victory. The tie for first place in the DVAL section brought thousands to the Los Lomas field. This game would name the leader in the race for the title. The Pirates came home winners by I9-O. Pittsburg's neighbors, the West Pittsburg Spartans, were the next victims. The Spartans were a hard-to-beat, courageous team. The score was 47 to I9. The Diablo Red Devils have always been hard to beat. Once again the title-bound Pirates showed their strength both on defense as well as offense and shut out the dazed Red Devils 25-O. This year the Pirates set back the Panthers' high hopes in the Big Little game, setting a new scoring record of 61-7 for this traditional classic. Four men won All-county: tackles Nick Gonzales and Frank Lazio, guard Anthony Barraco, and end Ken Kovacs. Second-string honors went to center John Galli and halfback Vince Darone, a iunior who led the league by scoring 54 points. Winning third- string All-county honors were quarterback AI Hurtado, end Joe Lucido, and halfback Judo Esposito. Honorable mentions were halfbacks John Nord and Willie Coston. This is the last year Pittsburg will participate in a six-game league schedule. In I958 the Pirates will have four non-league practice games and four league games.
