STANDING: Adviser Mr. Collin, Norman Simoes, Ken Kovacs, Tony Aiella, Ken Lucida, Larry Wood, Paul Mello, adviser Mrs. Shirley. Early in the year, PHS petitioned for a Mu Alpha Theta charter. This is an honorary club for students who have a B average or above in math. To obtain a charter a school must offer at least three semesters of algebra, two semesters of geometry, and one semester of more advanced mathematics. At least one teacher, whose primary teaching field is mathematics and who has completed an under- graduate maior in mathematics, must be employed. Mrs. Dorothy Shirley and Mr. John Collin, advisers of the club, meet these requirements. ln order to belong to this club students must have completed or will complete a definite number ot required courses. There are approximately seventeen students who were eligible for membership in the club. 56

Choir Mr. Jones leading the Choir. This year the Choir under the direction of Mr. Jones, has thirty-nine members, nine of them boys. They are doing a great iobf' states Mr. Jones, who is pleased with the interest and enthusiasm members have shown. This year the Choir sang on November lO at the University of California where there were approximately four-thousand student singers. The day started out with dif- ferent high schools singing and the Pittsburg High School Choir sang in the morning. At noon they ate lunch at the Greek Theater where the Choral Society of the Uni- versity sang for the students. In the afternoon they attended a football game. In February they went to the College of Pacific for a Festival. They sang at our own Christmas program. Choir members are also working on a one-act comedy opera entitled Dizzy Baton. The male lead will go to Victor Billeci and all the other characters center around him. Mr. Jones thinks this year's choir is the best in many years. 55

The Romance Language Club under the supervision of Mrs. Giesen, Mrs. Gibbs, and Mr. Pomposo is in its third year. It includes students who are taking or who have taken Italian, Spanish, or Latin. This year the club is divided into two groups: active members and associate members. Active members do various services for the club, such as sell- ing at games and working on committees for the banquets. These members are eligible to receive activity points. During the year the activities ofthe club are picnics and banquets given by the ltalian, Spanish, or Latin section of the club.
