You will also be remembered with respect and admiration for your successful handling of problems arising during the complete rebuilding of our high school. In the face of all these difficulties, you were always cheerful and serene. PHS has been fortu- nate in having such strong leadership during this trying period. Though you are leaving PHS this year, we know that the high school's loss is the district's gain. Many undergraduates will miss you. Yet we are sure that they ioin with us in congratulating you on your promotion. To you we dedicate this yearbook with gratitude that we have nad such able leadership during our high-school years. Of the 689 students who last September began the new year at Pittsburg high school, T85 enrolled for the last time. The weather was hot and sticky, and cottons were the thing. Friends who hadn't seen each other dur- ing the summer months were reunited, and everyone settled down to the busy schedule of school life. The first rally came on September 20, with yells led by Andrea Davi, Roseanne Cattolico, cmd Carol DeStefano. The pom-pom girls had their first chance to perform with new routines. The next day the Pirates and their rooters iourneyed to Monterey for the annual game with the Toreadors. Increasing classroom space on the campus was the handsome new arts and crafts wing. Girls were thinking in unfavorable terms of the new swimming courses re- quired as a regular part of gym. The first issue of the Galleon announced that Pittsburg had eight new teach- ers on the staff, all men. October was the month for football and the first Pirate deadline. After much confusion and without the presence of the regular yearbook advisor, Mrs. Roxie Gibbs, the staff was finally able to meet its requirements. Then came colder weather and the end of football season, the Pirates again taking the championship with a 61-7 win over Antioch. The exchange rally with Antioch was a success, Principal E. A. Poe commem- orated it by leading a yell. January brought wind, rain, and final examina- tions. With the election of Miss Pirateer, the spring semester began. Seniors found they had a busy schedule. The Junior-senior party came in February. The Senior Ball Committee early began work for the most important dance of the year, while other senior committees planned for such events at Ditch Day. All looked forward to June 13 with mixed feelings, happy to be on their own but sad that they were saying final farewells to PHS. Some like Nancy Cardinale and Frances Lucido planned on marriage after graduation while others including Dan Alfaro, Josephine Mercurio, and Theresa Guzman planned on attending college. The seniors looked to the future with bright, high hopes and happy moments to remember. Entertainers at the Antioch-Pittsburg exchange rally, one of the liveliest of the year. FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Don Reighley, Edna Lesser, Jess Delgado. SECOND ROW: Max Bosquez, Robert Melendez, Noel Nellis. The class of '59 has just completed its second year at Pittsburg High School. As during their sophomore year, the students continued to prepare for the future. Realizing the importance of a good education, most worked earnestly to receive good grades. One of the most memorable events of the year was the Junior Prom with the theme of Winter Frolic. This theme was carried out by snowmen and snow dancers decorating the cafeteria. A good crowd danced to the mambo band of-Frank Lombardo. Sophomores, as well as the rest of the student body, attended a first-day assembly where Mr. Poe welcomed the sophomores and in- formed them of the rules of the school. For many sophomores the Junior Prom was their first formal dance, another exciting experience. The second dance of the year was the Sophomore Hop and Crowning of Miss Pirateer. Bruce Carlson began in January to plan decorations for the February 28 Sophomore Hop. The committee chairmen, under the direction of Mr. Joseph Lee, were Bruce Carlson, decorations, Sharon Rebstock, publicity, Betty Gobbey, favors, Jackie Knap, budget, Grace Ann Russo, refreshments, Diane Coray, entertainment, and Bart Carlson, cleanup. 4 , Sophomore Class Gfficers Fall Presidenl Fall Vice-presideni Fall Secrefury Fall Delegale Bruce Carlson Bar? Student Council Ken Lucido, Fall President The student council has done a great deal to help with the progress and rapid improvements of Pittsburg High School. This past year members of the council had to accomplish much of the work at the business meetings because of the lack of a leadership class. Council members hope that next year the class will again be in the curriculum. Representatives attended two meetings of the California Association of Student Councils and four meetings of the Diablo Valley lnterschool Council. At these meetings mutual problems of the schools were discussed. Later in the year four delegates were sent to the Governor's Conference on Youth Participation in Community Affairs. This is the first year that Pittsburg has attended. Members again sold bookcovers at the student bank. They also worked after school setting up booths for the concessions for football and basketball games. Elsie Macfarlane, commissioner of records, said, Our concession program seems to work better than those ot other schools but still needs improvement. 4-0 LEFT TO RIGHT are Paul Kayfetz, JoAnn Olvera, Levi Glasper, Elsie Macfarlcine, and Arlene Bonarl. Spring Council Levi Glasper Mr Macfarlane President Advisor This year, your Student Council has faced some confusing times. First of all, we do not have the leadership class. Those of us who are now working on the Council realize the great importance of this class. lt is sincerely hoped that next year we may once again include the leadership class for your Student Council. As your Student Council advisor, I hope the knowledge gained in your council work will inspire you to seekr further knowledge that you might prepare yourselves for the solution of the many problems facing your community, your state, your nation, and the world. Those of you who have taken part in the Student Council work and activities of your school have already shown a willingness to assume responsibilities beyond your requirements. It is this willingness to do a little more than is required of you in your school today which will surely make you the leaders of your community tomorrow. We must all remember that most of the progress in ways of peace and civili- zation has come out of confusing times such as these. The highest determination of men and women with peaceful souls is that we equip ourselves educationally for a free world. The i958 Pirate represents the fine co- operation of the entire student body with the execu- tive group and staff. This year's book will be outstanding for this fact alone. The Pittsburg High School may well be proud that such an important step has been taken, and the true goal of the annual has been realized. Marietta Russo and her assistants solicited ad- vertisements from the townspeople and were very successful because of the fine co-operation of the community. Working as senior editor was Clara Roybal. Judy Castellotti and Mark Taves worked as iunior and sophomore editors respectively. Other members of the staff were as follows: Angela Cataldo, senior picture editor, Mary Jane Bruno, typist, Jodee Russell, art editor, Tony Aiello, assistant art editor, Tina DiMercurio, copy editor, and Danny Alfaro, sports editor. Coach Tony Knap This year the Pirates went through another highly successful season to win the DVAL championship for the ninth year in the ten years Coach Tony Knop has handled football here. The Pirates started the season by losing a hard-fought I2-6 game to the Monterey Toreadors. This loss broke Pittsburg's winning streak of I2 games. Serra was the first team to fall before the determined Pirates. With hard running and aggressive blocking, the Pirates came through with their first victory of 33-6 for the I957 season. Coached by former Pittsburg grid star, George Galli, the Pleasant Hill Rams proved harder to beat than the Pirates had anticipated. The Pirates walked off the field win- ners by 7 to 6 after a breathless second half. Crowds jammed the Acalanes field expecting to see one of the closest games of the season with the Dons favored. The Pirates started off with a blitz attack, surprising the Dons and resulting in a 26-7 victory. The tie for first place in the DVAL section brought thousands to the Los Lomas field. This game would name the leader in the race for the title. The Pirates came home winners by I9-O. Pittsburg's neighbors, the West Pittsburg Spartans, were the next victims. The Spartans were a hard-to-beat, courageous team. The score was 47 to I9. The Diablo Red Devils have always been hard to beat. Once again the title-bound Pirates showed their strength both on defense as well as offense and shut out the dazed Red Devils 25-O. This year the Pirates set back the Panthers' high hopes in the Big Little game, setting a new scoring record of 61-7 for this traditional classic. Four men won All-county: tackles Nick Gonzales and Frank Lazio, guard Anthony Barraco, and end Ken Kovacs. Second-string honors went to center John Galli and halfback Vince Darone, a iunior who led the league by scoring 54 points. Winning third- string All-county honors were quarterback AI Hurtado, end Joe Lucido, and halfback Judo Esposito. Honorable mentions were halfbacks John Nord and Willie Coston. This is the last year Pittsburg will participate in a six-game league schedule. In I958 the Pirates will have four non-league practice games and four league games. Title Holders This year, along with their Varsity Big Brother, the Junior Pirates have retained their 1956 football championship on to 1957, winning 6 out of 7 league games and tying only one. This is Coach Joe Berlcich's second championship squad in the two years he has coached here at Pittsburg High. The Junior Pirates rounded out a perfect season with a l4-7 win over their tradi- tional rivals, the Antioch Junior Varsity. This game meant either losing the champion- ship to Pleasant Hill and placing second in league standings, or being sole champs of the D.V.A.L. section. Miramonte was the only game in which both teams played hard to a scoreless tie. Antioch turned out to be more than the Junior Pirates reckoned tor. But with clashing shoulder pads, hard-running ball carriers, and a determination to win the Junior Varsity closed out a season they can well be proud of. Umphl , A-55 N. Second-place Winners With high leaps to the backboards, accurate shoot- ing, fast breaks, and a determination to win, the Pirate varsity basketball team came through with a season which is characteristic of Pittsburg. Placing second to Diablo high in league standings, Coach Thomason's var- sity won i5 to T7 league games. The team dropped one to Diablo before receiving a setback at the hands of Pleasant Hill high. John Nord, a returning letterman from last year, was elected most valuable player by his teammates as was Al Hurtado, a player up from last year's light- weight team, who was chosen season captain. Nord was named to the first-string All-county team elected by the various coaches ot the league. Second-string All-county honors went to Al Hurtado. Frank Cardinale, a junior, was named honorable-mention in All-county honors and also gained All-tourney recognition at this year's Gridley tournament. This was Pittsburg's second trip to the Gridley Tour- nament. ln T957 the Pirates took the tournament cham- pionship. This year the defending champs came up with a consolation trophy after first losing to El Cerrito and then downing Santa Cruz and Albany for consolation. ln seven years with the varsity, Coach Thomason has won three championships, three second places, and one third place. Coach Macfarlane J i Varsity and B Track Bidding a farewell as Pittsburg high's track coach, Coach Sterling Macfarlane will take over the task of principal of Pittsburg high in the tall of l958. During the tive years he has coached Pittsburg's track teams, the varsity team has won one county championship, has plgced second for three years, and one year placed third. His light-weight teams have for tive straight years won the county championship. Coach Mactarlane's comments at the beginning of the track season were, We are very thin in the A's in numbers. Although we have good individuals, we need a lot of entries to win. The B's could be the strongest team I've ever had here. In the years he has coached here practically all of Pitts- burg's records have been broken. The records still existing in the varsity are these: 440, Wiley McLane Cl949D, 50.7, shot- put, John H. Johnson CI949l, 57' 4V2 , the discus, John H. Johnson H9493 l48' 3 , and the mile, A. Azevedo Cl9303, 4:37.4. The B records not yet broken are the shop-put which stands at 55' 6V2 made by Herk Pardi in 1938 and the I32O made by Al Casillas lI952l, 3:2O.8. The student body voted by secret ballot, and the Eve girls with the highest votes were chosen to be on the court. Two of the girls on the court wore white gowns, and two of the girls wore pink. Miss Pirateer wore a white gown. She carried a bouquet of red roses, and her crown consisted of white stock. X if . 1 :ffffii ' :kwa Gen Stamper secrefa ry Mr. Poe PrincipaI's Message The time has again came to say good-by to a class of graduating seniors. This year's graduation will be a graduation for both of us, you to go on to higher educational opportunities, to work, or to marriage, and I to a new district-wide responsibility. This is always a time for an accounting. Have I done the best iob of which I am capable? Have I been the kind of person who always held high the interests of others? Have I constantly maintained faith in my Lord, my family, my peers and myself? Have I been able to see my mistakes and to use these experiences in ways that help me progress in attitude and thinking? Y Only you can answer these questions truthfully. Should you be able to answer in the affirmative you are well on your way to a happy, successful life. Should you have to answer in the negative it is not too late to change course and correct your faults. This is your life! Make the most of it! 94 Libby Ambrosinl typnst clerk Mr. Conti resigned from the board when he moved out of the district. Mr. Joseph H. Billeci, who formerly Joseph H Billecl was chairman of the board, was reappointed by the board to serve as a board member in Mr. Conti's seat. Boa rd of Education All through life there are Moments to Remember , but there will prob- ably be no other three-year span in which so much excitement and adventure will come your way as has been your experience during your senior high career. We are sure that there have been moments of happiness and moments of sadness, moments of exaltation and moments of disappoint- ment, moments of a sense of achievement and moments of frustration. We hope that the moments of happiness, exaltation, and a sense of achievement are those that you will keep with you in memory. National and world affairs make us, as a nation, ponder and reassess the value of education. Political leaders, who have neglected education for many years, are now wanting miracles accomplished over-night. You can be proud that you have attended a high school that has long been concerned with these problems and has made every effort to provide you with a thorough and complete course of study in fundamentals in every field. You have been fortunate to have lived in a community that was not only able but willing to provide the best in buildings and equipment, and to have had a Board of Education that was dedicated to providing a thorough education for all pupils. You have been favored to have been able to study under a faculty, each member of which was competent, qualified, and sincere. lf you took advantage of this opportunity, you will be well on your way to being pnepared to serve your country well in the hour of need for well-trained young men and women. Greetings and congratulations, then, Class of i958. May your ac- complishments in the years ahead match your fine record here, and give to all of us, in the satellite age ahead, many fine Moments to Remember, Dr. Charles E.
