the tarheel techno PHESENTS THE STAFF FACULTY AND STUDENTS 0F PITT TECI-INICAI INSTITUTE 'WW ARCHIVES HISTUHICAL BA CKGHUUIVD GENERAL INFORMATION Pitt Technical Institute had its beginning in 1960 when the citizens of Pitt County approved a bond issue for the construction of a physical plant to house an Industrial Education Center. The school was chartered in 1961 as an Industrial Education Center to serve the needs of the people of Pitt County and surrounding areas. In 1964 the school was designated a Technical Institute by the North Carolina State Board of Education. The first classes were held in the new building in September, 1964, with an initial enrollment of 96 full-time day students. Since that time, the Institute has steadily increased its enrollment and broad- ened its curriculum. The lnstitute is located on Highway 11, South, between Greenville and Winterville. The original building and the new classroom build- ing has approximately 67,000 square feet of useable space with spacious and well-designed laboratories, shops, and classrooms. The school is a publicly supported, non-profit technical Institute that offers a broad curriculum in technical and vocational programs. 2 A MESSAGE EHUM Tl-IE PRESIDENT I Q -1 ul 2 I -E17 I Li- :- Dr. William E. Fulford, E Jr. Pitt Technical Institute has a commitment to the philosophy that everyone should have an opportunity through the educational pro- cess to develop himself to his maximum potential. This Institute implements this philosophy by providing quality education at a low cost under an open-door policy that excludes no one. The overall objective of Pitt Technical Institute is to prepare its students for a life-long success in whatever field they choose to enter. Our method to this result is to continually upgrade the tech- nical and vocational curricula so that they realistically prepare the student for a successful venture into our present day economy. This Institute prides itself in having on its staff the most competent individuals that can be found. Wilbur A. Ballenger. Few teachers handle so successfully so many students in so many different courses for so many hours each week. Only a man with the energies and resourcefulness of lVlr. Ballenger could teach courses in English, psychology, sociology, and the evening Supervisory Development Training program, and still have time to offer to individual students - - even those not enrolled in his own classes. The untiring efforts and the unfailing patience of this man have provided inspiration and encouragement to more students than even he could realize.
