Time has passed quickly this last yearg and steadily the sand has trickled through the hour glass, the shadow has traveled around the sundial, and the days have length- ened into months. As We look back over our school Clays we shall forget the trials of tests and the drudgery of homework, but shall remember the good times we had, the lasting friends we made, and the teachers who guided us through four eventful years. We hope that this yearbook will be a constant reminder of those clays when we experienced so many happy times. i W' il 99' i V' R Ni . ' g 1-p g, wwwixv I iiilig.. CHIUMENTO M DEIIIII Tlll The Senior Class is pleased to dedicate its yearbook, the 1953 Talisman, to two faithful friends of the Class, Mrs, Chiumento and Mr. Powell. For their thoughtfulness and cheerful cooperation in advising our class through its high school career, we are indeed grateful. We also appreciate the help given us by Mr. Gerald Groninger during the first three years of high school. 'Quo-vc Byyyv xl y 1 Q t g li: 5 . ARTHUR WALTON HENRY B, COOPER I-HJMI ISTH TIU Mr. Walton came to Pitman in 1923 as principal of the newly organized high school, in which position he served until 1941, when he became supervisor of the Pitman school system. His wholehearted endeavor has been to improve the educational facilities for young people. Mr. Cooper, formerly a teacher of history in the high school, became its principal in 1941. He, too, has devoted his life to the problems of youth and has always tried to increase the opportunities offered to the students of the school. V, Mary E. Kerr Dorothy Hausmann To Mrs, Kerr and Mrs. Hausmann, our secretaries, is due much of the efficiency of the school management. Always on the job, they have solved many problems for perplexed students. .B.... , TALISMA STAFF This, our last year in P. H. S., has been a busy one. Among our many activities was the publication of our year-book in which we have tried to tell the story of 1952-1953 in an interesting manner. We hope that in future years this will be a happy reminder of high school. The Student Association, to the membership of which all members of the student body are eligible, has as its governing body a group of elected members, known as the Student Council. The council has many opportunities for service, such as solving problems that vitally Concern the welfare of the school and sponsoring various projects throughout the year. The Council of 1952-53 has worked very efhciently under the leadership of President Richard Caulk and the guidance of Mrs. Ella Reid. Among the successful activities were packing Christmas baskets, sponsoring a movie benefit for the school paper, and staging two social events, the Christmas and Farewell Dances. In the sports, it is track and boys' and girls' baseball. The Junior-Senior Prom and the farewell dance are the two last prominent social activities for the Seniors. The year book is issued and the Senior Assembly held, followed by the Baccalaureate Service and then the long desired graduation. Good-byes are exchanged between students, and, in the future, reunion is hoped for. ll H HISTIJHY T PITM!-1 As the trees exchanged their coat of green for a brighter one, P.H.S. bade farewell to the Class of 1949 and welcomed the Class of 1953. With Mrs. Chiumento and Mr. Groninger to guide us and our president-Benjamin Gor- man, vice-president-Ben Belluobono, secretary -Shirley Philipona, treasurer-Janis Law, to help us, we set to work immediately to take an active part in school affairs and to make a name for ourselves. Our first dance, the Freshman Party, was a big success. Financial ventures included a sale of pep hats in order to get our treasury started. june seemed to approach very fast and with it final exams. With the coming of winter, 1950, we selected our leaders for our Sophomore Year, with Rich- ard Caulk, president, William Frazure, vice- presidentg Shirley Philipona, secretary, and Janis Law, treasurer. Our advisors remained the same as the previous year. Our main project this year was.the sale of note paper in order to raise money for the Soph- omore Hop, which was held in May with the decorations from the Junior-Senior Prom being used. The Juniors had spent much time in pre- paration in order to transform the gym into a beautiful Winter Wonderland. Music was provid- ed by Jimmy Filer's orchestra, whose services had been donated by the Pitman Youth Council. After' exams we looked forward to being Juniors. Again our advisors this year were Mrs. Chiumento and Mr. Groninger. We chose these officers: pressident, Ben Gorman, vice-president, Don Gray: secretary, Shirley Philipona, treas- urer, Janis Law. With the half-way mark behind us we planted our feet deep in the spring soil and set out to work toward the best prom to be pre- sented by any Junior Class in P.H.S. Money was earned through the sale of Christmas cards and magazines. By this time our treasury was beginning to swell rapidly. Our class rings arrived early in November. On March Z1 and 22 the Junior Play, That Crazy Smith Family, so well directed by Miss Kane, was presented in the school auditorium. In the early part of May, the Juniors and the Seniors and their guests enjoyed an evening of dancing to the music of Mat Sultan's orches- tra in the midst of Oriental Gardens. Painted on the walls were a huge dragon, a mountain scene, a rickshaw, and a bridge, along with other scenes. We were proud to 'present to the school a handsome gray, black, and blue banner designed by Wayne Hoffner. This banner has taken its place of honor in the auditorium and later will be placed with the 'others in the gymnasium. Mrs. Chiumento- and Mr, Powell did a fine job in guiding us during our Senior Year. We chose the following officers to lead us through this important year: president, Ben Gormang vice-president, Russell Powell, secretary, Shirley Philiponag treasurer, Janis Law. Our magazine drive this year was a wonder- ful success, for we broke the Pitman High School record by selling 52,890 worth of magazines. After the magazine drive we got down to the business of selling Christmas cards, peanut brit- tle, and Christmas candy. The class play given on January 23-24 in the auditorium was the mystery comedy, Three Fingers in the Door . By this time everyone was excited about the trip to' Washington, for which many plans were made. The prom was held in May, and this year the Seniors were the guests of the Class -of 1954. Hats off to the Juniors for a grand job well done, Then came the farewell assembly, soon to be followed by graduation, provided those final examinations were passed successfully. Prizes were awarded to those students who showed out- standing abilities in various activities and studies. Finally summer vacation was anticipated. The Senior year, it is true, was no vacation. Cramming at the last minute for things we should have learned in the four preceding years, working hard to raise adequate funds, and pre- paring for our forthcoming college careers or jobs could hardly be called a picnic. We had fun, however, and the road wasn't really so bumpy as it sometimes seemed. l 3 UNIUH PL Y Now, Henry, we have company! THAT CRAZY SMITH FAMILY On March 21 and ZZ, 1952, the Junior Class presented That Crazy Smith Family . The play, a comedy in three acts by Katherine Kavanaugh, was under the capable direction of Miss Edna F, Kane. That Crazy Smith Familyn depicted a typical day in the chaotic schedule of the Smiths. The very humorous and unexpected incidents helped the play live up to its title a hundred per cent. The hard work of sixteen cast members and backstage crew, made the play a great success.
