In the interpretation of the power and duties of the Board it is understood that the Board shall act as a legislative bodv in the determina- tion of general policies for the control. opera- tion. maintenance and expansion of the public schools, execution of which shall be the respon- sibilitv of the administrative staff. In complving with the above the Pitcairn School Directors have provided the financial support neeessarv to carry on a complete pro- gram and have provided manv specific improve- ments in the secondary program. A few of the major improvements are: Providing the equiva- lent oi' a full-time guidance counselorg complet- ing the installation of flourescent lighting in all classroomsg purchasing a new auditorium curtaing equipping one classroom with new desks: pro- viding a full-time secretarv to the high school principal and part time assistance to the music director. 1954 Qfroapecf Along with the numerous improvements for the student bodv the School Board has pro- vided a separate teachers room for men and women of the facultv. This improvement in- directlv aids the student also. for bv giving the facultv more adeouate and comfortable rooms keep them in better spirits and makes them much more understanding with the students. The School Board in keeping with tradition of providing a fine facultv this vear added Miss Donahue. Nliss Duncan. Miss Carvis. Mr. Cala- gaza. and Xlr. Thomas to the alreadv excellent teaching staff. A new member. Mr. Milton Cook, was elect- ed to the Board to fill the vacancy made bv the expiration of Nlr. Ilarrv Peer's term. The students of Pitcairn High School have much to be thankful for. Especially for the fact that the voters of Pitcairn continually elect a School Board which works untireingly to see that administration, faculty, and school equip- ment are the very best obtainable for the re- sources of the school system. Ja, Wa 52 Qian NVQ- lfreslnneu have just completed what seemed to he our most difficult year of schooling. lt was different. exciting. and fun: hut most of all it gave us a year more of experience. XYith the guidance of the facultx' we have learned to accept difficulties with a mature understanding. XXX- have learned to accept responsihilities with self-confidence and poise: to respect our teach- ers and fellow students. and to show good sports- manship. XYe have now completed the hasic suhjects of our chosen high school courses. Next rear. we shall take different paths according to personal interests. and we helieve we are thoroughly prepared. Our class president was Billie Xlercantez vice-president. Ronald Brookyg secretary-tra-asur- er. Kenneth Chadderton. Our officers were good workers. Thex' knew their respousihilities and knew how to take care of them. The class colors were lwlue and white. and our flower was the white rose. Our motto was. Nightwork isnit realli' heaven. hut it will help us graduate in '5Tl This year the most popular sport with our lmoys was lmaskethall. Un the junior lligh School haskethall team were Ken Chadderton. Xlayne Backus. Ralph Cepec. Ronnie Brooky. Terrv llarkins. David Fowler. Clarence Duke. llonnie Keller. Thomas Xlahon. and ltolmert ltomano. XYe are proud of every one of them. The two junior high cheerleaders from ninth grade were Carole Schenck and Janice Ifletcher. The hoys that plavcd footlmall were Steven Snee. Ronald Keller. and Donald Lang. Kenneth Ghaddarton was a manager. XYe presented our assemhly program in Xlarch. lt was a variety show with George l.ohr as Xlaster of Ceremonies. The main entertain- ers were Janet Greene. accordiazuistg Carl Thomp- son. with his electric guitarg and Verna Nlclilwee. vocalist. These that took part in the skit were Kenneth Ghadderton. Kenneth Locke. Sandra Borst. Nancy Stauss. Hohert Romano. Elizabeth Clinton. and Curtiss Cook. .-Xll participants were verx' good. XYe held a dance the same month and it also proved to he a success. The ninth grade student council niemhers were Ronald Brooky. Xlarlene Xlillar. Elaine Litehenfels. and Tohn George. XYe now have to look forward and must strixe to make the rg-st of our high school career as successful as this year. to rememher what we have heen taught and to work for the good of our school and our future. XVQ never could forget the cool au- tumn days at the football field when we passed out line-ups as sophomores. Also as sophomores we started the new tradition of giving red roses to the seniors on class day. As juniors we sponsored dances follow- ing the home football games. In November we presented our play, lt's a Date. The prom committee worked hard to plan the details for the junior-Senior Prom, which was held at the Edgewood Countrv Club on May 8 with music bv Iimmv Cambles orchestra. Our senior year came too suddenly. VVe were kept busy studving for scholar- ships and preparing for graduation. The seniors participated in many ac- tivities. Our concession committee sold refreshments at the home football games. In November our play Cradle Trouba- dour was a great success. VVe held a Christmas Dance in the gym which was decorated with a huge pine sprinkled with snow plus pine branches around the gym walls. A Snow King and Queen reigned that evening. All too soon prom time came again. More hectic days followed the prom. Pre- parations were made for graduation. May 25 was the final day of the season as we received our diplomas. The seniors of 1954 have left the P.H.S., but they will never forget the joys and sorrows they shared within its halls.
