AGTIGN WE THE PEOPLE ALL STAR REVUE SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS 1 DR. T. J. KELLY Supervising Principal Our supervising principal, Dr. Thomas J. Kelly, has been at Pitcairn only two years. He has contributed much in helping to make our fu- tures successful. He has prepared us to meet our problems and overcome them. Most of all he has shown us the desire to practice the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The senior class of 1953 would like to express its appreciation for his endless efforts. Miss Helen Dobson and Dr. Thomas J. Kelly 14 miniA tration 2 if .ies ' ' - . iii:Li, I MR. C. A, NEWMAN High School Principal Mr. Carl A. Newman, our high school prin- cipal, came to Pitcairn High School during the 1951-52 school term. ln these short two years he has advised us and guided us in developing our characters, personalities, talents, and, above all, our educational background. Through his untiring eftorts he has shown us how educational leadership aids in lite adiustment. We, the graduating class of l953, are deeply indebted for Mr. Newman's guidance in helping us to meet the challenges of today. Miss Elfreidcx Kuhn and Mr. Carl A, Newman birecfvl' . . . or UUR TELECAST Wigtdom 0 The 14geA During the school term of T952-53, our Board of Education has carried on their ever constant struggle to make Pitcairn High School a school that every member is proud to claim as their alma mater. They willingly gave the school their time and effort to seek the many needed im- provements and immediately set about to tackle each job. Through their vivid observations and long lasting perseverance, they embarked upon the difficult problem of insuring effective light- ing in the school. Realizing the great necessity for proper lighting in the building, the School Board installed soft and indirect fluorescent lights in the library, also included were half of the rooms on both floors. This system of fluorescent light fixtures assures extra soft and instant light- ing. It proves to be easier on our eyes and brouaht brightness to our working centers. Going beyond the general improvements that enable our school to be one of the finest in the valley, the Board of Education considered the comforts of our faculty whose patient and cease- less understanding endeavors us to become better citizens of tomorrow. Discovering the essential need of furniture in the teachers' room, the Board sought to improve the appearance and working conditions by purchasing the furniture. The teachers' room now has an atmosphere of cheer- fulness in which every member of the faculty finds it very satisfactory to do their many chores. The members of the Board of Education re- main the same as the preceding year. They elected one new teacher, Mr. Walter Antimarino, to the faculty's staff. Pitcairn High School will continue to be a place of pride as long as we have this capable, industrious, and enthusiastic School Board to take a vital interest in our welfare and future. We could never forget the Wise Fools of April, which we produced in our sophomore year. It was also in this year that we said, Goodbye, to our good friend, Mr. Fails. As iuniors we sponsored dances after the home football games. We presented the three- act comedy, The Mummy and the Mumps. Our prom committee worked hard planning aii the details of the Junior-Senior Prom, which was held at Edgewood Country Club on May 9 with music by Red Barr's orchestra. With our senior year came the many hectic details of preparing for graduation. This year was the busiest and most memorable one of our high school days. The seniors participated in many activities. Our concession committee sold refreshments at the football games. We held a Christmas Dance in the gym which was decorated with a huge, brightly lighted pine tree and many, many stars hanging from the ceiling. ln January we produced the Maroon and White Follies, a revue in which students from all classes participated. The Senior play, Father Was a Housewife, was also a great success. This delightful comedy was presented in April. Prom time soon was here. How fast time seemed to be flying! All too soon came our un- forgettable class day. As the students sang, where, oh where are the grand old seniors, we realized that our carefree days in high school were now iust a memory. Soon we would be out in the cold, cold world. On May 26 we re- ceived our diplomas and that thought became a reality. Although the curtain has now runq down and the play is over, we will always remember the parts that we played as students in Pitcairn High School. Senior CIMA Officem Joseph Rizzo Joe . . . The class officers that led us so well were Lee Africa, President, Janet Brown, Vice Presi- dent, and Paul Thurn, Secretary-Treasurer. Our class advisers were Mr. Snyler and Miss Baldy. As the sophomore class we sold football lineups for all of our home games. Some of the other proiects which were done during the year were the selling of Cargo's Candy for Christmas and Easter, bake sales, and a few dances, includ- ing a George Washington Ball. We were well represented on the high school football team. Two of our boys, Jerry Borst and Kenny Mignogna, played first string. The others, including Harry Edwards, Russell Agostini, Robert Shearer, Frank Burick, Edward Clinton, Jimmy Stevic, Paul Szekely, and Norman Mulchan, were substitutes for the varsity and played junior var- sity football. Our other contributions to Pitcairn High's sports world were in basketball and base- ball. On the basketball team we were repre- sented by Lee Africa, Jim Stevic, Edward Clinton, Ken Mignogna, Dave Lukehart, Bob Shearer, Pat- sy Moiqa, and Bob Moon. Lee Africa and Kenny Mignogna were on the varsity squad. Terry Zim- merman was the manager of the varsity team. We also participated in the gym exhibition. n, l.. Africa, Mr. Snyder, J. Brown Three of our girls, Mary Ann Borst, Ethel Adams, and Dolores Lynn, are cheerleaders. Patricia Turner was chosen as a majorette for next year. Our representatives on student coun- cil this year were Helen Rae Graham, Judy Millar, Patsy Turner, and Lee Africa. Our class has also contributed to the band, the members being as follows: Patsy Turner, Dolores Lynn, Bernard Gei- ger, Terry Zimmerman, Lee Gray, Bob Moon, Dave Lukehart, Wayne Walthour, Paul Thurn, Barbara Closson, Nancy Hurst and Eugene Hreha. Since a number of new clubs have been added to our extra-curricular activities, the soph- omore class has been very quick to respond. Those that we ioined were Varsity Club, Glee Club, Tri Hi Y, Hi Y, Girls' Leaders Club, Press Club, F. H.A., Library Club, College Club, Boys' Leaders Club, American Legion Award Club. For our assembly this year the class pre- sented a few skits written by members of the class. A few of our talented classmates also per- formed. Some new additions to the class from Mon- roeville were Norman Mulchan, Dorothy Jae, Norma Sterling, Helen Rae Graham, Donna Clos- son, Carl Hahn, and Charlotte Overly. We conclude this year with a feeling of time well spent. 4? Q7 X FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS-Left to Right: Gary Adams, Fred Mendicino, Mrs, Bergman, Henny Ballenger, Nancy Keeley Almost a year ago, we Freshies, bewild- ered, confused, and mystified, embarked upon our initial voyage on the good ship, High School. However, we found that even though all our classes were in the high school, we were still considered part of the Junior High. But we refused to let this knowledge dampen our spirits, so we quickly adapted our new environment and set about to prove our leadership and ability. We organized our class selecting for our ollficers Fred Mendicino, President, Henrietta Ballenger, Vice President, Nancy Keeley, Secretary, and Gary Adams, Treasurer. Mrs. Bergman was our class adviser. In spite of the fact that many of the senior high activities were not open to us, we eagerly joined those which welcomed us. Those of us who were interested in music proudly joined the ranks of the band. In the Student Council Roger Borst, Nancy Rodgers, Mary Ann Hoff, and Fred Mendicino gave the freshman point of view in matters of discussion. A great many members of the Freshman class ioined the Girls' Leaders Club, the Boys' Leaders Club, the Library Club, the Hi Y, the Tri Hi Y, the Stage Crew, Chess Club, Press Club, and the American Legion Award Club. Many members of the class also partici- pated in the aym exhibition. In the field of sports the boys earned a dis- tinction for their class. On the gridiron ten fel- lows showed great promise for the future foot- ball history of P. H. S. They were Gary Adams, Chuck Conrad, John Schmitt, Paul Mauro, Bob Parks, Terry McGauley, Don McCraig, Dave DeVito, Kenny Hayward, Bill Duncan. Acting as managers for the football sauad were Orelio Vec- chio and Paul Troy. Some of our boys also went out for basketball. Those on the iunior high squad were Allen Border, Jim Flcry, Chuck Con- rad, Bob Williams, Gary Adams, Don McCaig, Richard Fisher, Paul Mauro, Kenny Hayward, Fred Mendicino, Bob Parks, Bill Duncan, and Clyde Edwards. Orelio Vicchio and Paul Troy were also the iunior high basketball managers. We Freshmen have acquired our knowledge this far by ups and downs. With an eye on the achievements of this enterprising class of '53, one can be sure that our members will write a brilliant history on the future of Pitcairn High School, our Alma Mater. Little did we know then that publishing a yearbook is more than taking some pictures and writing a few articles. lt never en- tered our minds that there had to be a certain plan to the book, that the Retrospect must have a themeg that you just can't paste a picture here and there and have a yearbook to be proud of. However, it was iust a short time until we discovered these facts and started to get down to work. With the help of our adviser, Mr. Horosz, we finally decided on a theme and set about to build our book around it. Publishing a yearbook requires a substan- tial sum of money. To help meet this amount, the staff held a Sadie Hawkins' Day Dance and an Easter Dance. For these affairs which were held in the gym, many original decorations were used. We also sponsored a magazine subscrip- tion drive in which the entire student body co- operated. Front Row-left to Right: J. Ballenger, F, Deletis, J. Twardowski, R. Adams, P. Hill, L. Hysong, C. J. The girls worked with various oltice ma- chines, such as the mimeograph, duplicator, and dictciphone. They also had the use of six electric typewriters for several weeks. The girls took turns working in the high school office, where they performed various stenographic duties. Besides learning the use of office machines and the routine work of an office, they worked hard to achieve accuracy and speed in typing and shorthand. They feel that their work should be done well and be deserving of credit so that they may accomplish their goals. -N, 7utare llomemaleem The F. H. A. is a club for all girls who have had one semester of homemaking. The purpose of the club is to increase interest in worthy home- making functions, such as sewing and cooking, and to enable the girls to make valuable use of their leisure time. Some of the activities and projects of the club were improving the homemaking room and collecting toys and clothing for the Orphan's Home. A dance was held and the girls planned other social functions. They collected Christmas cards for the veterans at Aspinwcill Hospital. The officers elected this year were Clara Polce, President, l.aVonne Helman, Vice Presi- dent, Connie landiamarino, Secretary, and Imo- gene Rutter, Treasurer. The club adviser is Mrs. Louise Kuhn. The club mem- bers are girls from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades who are interested in physical education and wish to advance their skills be- yond regular gym activity. A great attraction was the addition of the trampoline to the gym equipment. Swimming, bowling and other events are part of the social program. All mem- bers of the club took an active part in the gym exhibition. The officers of the club were Sandra Keeley, President, Lois Ann Mowry, Vice President, Mar- cia Warner, Secretary-Treasurer. Student C011nci1 Student Council has been quite active this year with many different proiects. Council char- tered buses to take the students to the Snowden Township football game, helped sell tickets to all school productions, sold candy at the basket- ball games, acted as guides on Open House Night, and gave out honor awards. Council has collected a library of records, which were rented to various school groups for their dances. Officers for the year were Chuck Overly, President, Ray Borst, Vice President, Janice Bal- lenger, Recording Secretary, Pat Hollibaugh, Cor- responding Secretary, and Bob Morley, Treasur- er. Miss Kenney was the club's adviser. bmmatic C1116 The Dramatic Club was organized for those students who wished to become better ac- quainted with the techniques of the theater. During the year the club discussed plays, light- effects, scenery and the use of make up. They discussed and read over plays and pantomimes in small groups. A few of the skits were adapted and presented for the entertainment of the en- tire club. Elected as officers for the year were Connie Penrod, President, Joanne Malandra, Vice Presi- dent, and Thora Flack, Secretary-Treasurer. Miss Bernice Keefer acted as the club's advisor. Key! Ieadef-A C1116 This year the boys leaders club was organ- ized under the direction of Coach Klausing. The boys have, as their chief activity, planned and prepared for the gym exhibition. These boys will act as leaders in teaching the others the skills and routines to be used in the exhibition. The boys leaders club also made a trip to Slip- pery Rock College to see their gym exhibition, which proved to be a wonderful experience to all who attended. Hward Club This club is composed of winners of the American Legion Medal Awards. Although a new club, it was an active one. The A. L. M. A. Club held a dance, the proceeds of which were donated to the March of Dimes Campaign. The group made plans to participate in the ceremony at which the awards are presented. The club in- formed the American Legion of the need for a plaque inscribed with the names of those who have won the award. Club officers are Pat Hallibaugh, President, Janet Brown, Vice President, Nancy Keeley, Sec- retary-Treasurer. Advisor is Mr. R. Smith. Spanisfli Z C1416 The officers selected for the year were Presi- dent, Jerry Roberts, Vice President, Janice Bal- lengerp Secretary, Catherine McCaFferty, Treas- urer, Jack Heaps. The most popular of our activities was the selling of candy at lunch time and after school. A covered dish was held on December 22. We also sponsored a Valentine Dance at which a King and Queen of Hearts were elected. For our assembly program we presented a play spoken entirely in Spanish. Each scene was in- terpreted in English for the benefit of the audi- ence. We had a very eventful year with Mrs. Berg- man as our advisor. 34 AWARD CLUB J. Ballenger smfii. 1 cm This was the first year a Spanish I Club was formed at P. H. S. Even though we were a new- ly organized group, we had no trouble in ob- taining a fairly large membership. The purpose of our club is to become better acquainted with the habits, ideas, customs, and language of the Spanish speaking countries. Through our studies we have gained much knowledge about our neighbors south of the border. Elected for oHice were Paul Thurn, Presi- dent, Gene Hreha, Vice President, Nancy Hurst, Secretary, and Stanley Penkova, Treasurer. The club was under the supervision of Mrs. Bergman. Frau C1416 The Press Club was comprised of members from seventh through twelfth grade. Joyce Thomas, a senior, is Editor, and Elsie Conrad, also a senior, is business manager. The purpose of the club is to publish the school paper, The Railroader. The staFf of reporters followed the athletic activities very closely and printed detailed write ups on the games. All social functions were thor- oughly covered, also. The many assemblies that were held during the year were accounted for in the monthly issues of The Railroader. The two freshmen elected to office were Henny Ballenger as Vice President and Joan Egan as Treasurer. ln September twenty-four of the sophomore members participated in helping the Pitcairn Ki- wanis in collecting money for National Kids' Day. Thirty freshmen and nine sophomores were taken into the Tri Hi Y on October 23, thus mak- ing the total membership seventy-one girls. A Candle-Light Induction Ceremony was held as initiation. The student body was invited to at- tend the ceremony which was held in the audi- torium. The lnduction Ceremony was very sol- emn and brought out the definite purposes of the Tri Hi Y, which are to help other people and to keep ourselves morally straight. Included in our many activities for the year was a Waist Line Hop on January IO. We had a bake cale in January that was a huge success. The proceeds from the bake sale were used to buy the decorations for the Spring Formal which was held April I9 in the gymnasium. We have had a very successful year with Mrs. Bergman as our advisor. The purpose of the club was to debate current issues concerning politics, econ- omics, and sociology. The members learned the fundamentals of participating in debates. They planned to give a debate on a current subiect before the entire student body in the high school auditorium. The students found it very educa- tional as well as enjoyable in looking for refer- ence material in preparing their speeches for the debates. U41-Aity C1116 This is the first year that this club has been organized. The Varsity Club consists of boys who have earned the Varsity letter P in either baseball, basketball or in football. The boys, at the beginning of the year, elect their fellow oFlicers who will guide them. After a boy has earned a letter and wishes to become a member, he must be voted on by the members which already belong to the club. To raise money, the boys held a few dances. With these funds they went in to see a baseball and a hockey game. DEBATE CLUB VARSITY CLUB 37 C'lieAA C7116 The Chess Club was organized for those boys who desired to learn the basic fundamentals and various techniques of the difficult game of chess. The members found that to play the com- plicated game well, they needed to use all their power of concentration. Meetings were held every other Friday in the high school Library. Presiding at these meet- ings were the officers and adviser, Mr. James Hannon, who gave the boys many pointers on the game. Officers elected for the year were Bob Clos- son, President, Dick Lentz, Vice President, Jack Streinor, Secretary, and Edward Clinton, Treas- urer. Stage Crew The stage crew is composed of the boys who are taking the manual training course. By their various activities, they gain practical experience in that field. During the year the stage crew helped with the lighting and stage equipment for all audi- torium functions. They helped create the scen- ery forthe productions and were on hand at all performances to assist in setting the stage. Our maiorettes, Arlene Dunsmore, Connie Irwin, Carmel Mignogna, Virginia Bolden, Mary Jane Folino, Sylvia Rizzo, and Eleanor Wrazo, spent many hours perfecting the marching and twirling routines which they performed. Carmel Mignogna also twirled two flags for an unusual half-time routine. The mascot, Donna Lotfredo, did her solo numbers just as well as the older maiorettes. For Open House the maiorettes performed some of the routines which they did during foot- ball season. This year, as in the past, the maiorettes did an excellent job, and we feel confident that they will continue to do so in the future. College 61116 This club was formed in an effort to help prospective college students decide on the school which will best prepare them for their chosen professions. Mr. Newman, our advisor, invited representatives of several colleges to our meet- ings to talk with us about their respective schools. In this way the members of the College Club re- ceived a general idea of the entrance require- ments, cost, social life, and scholarships in these schools. Aptitude tests were administered to those who were undecided as to the field of study which they should follow. Through this club catalogues, bulletins, pamphlets, and other material on many colleges were made available to all members. The College Club officers were President, Sandra Keeley, Vice President, Charles Ross, Sec- retary, Ray Borst. Strike 21 Wie Kane! HMUSNDAL An outstanding group in Pitcairn High School is our band of which we are very proud. This year the band was composed of sixty march- ing band members and seventy-tive concert members, most of whom are in iunior high. The band presented a fine appearance at all the football games. The band members worked diligently perfecting the many different formations and routines. After football season the band members began practicing for the annual Band and Glee Club Concert, which was held on March 28. Under Mr. Eugene Artac's expert direction, the concert was naturally a success. A club that was a tremendous help to the band was the Band Boosters. The club, com- posed of the parents of band members, spon- sored a house-to-house canvass, bake sales, and dances to earn money for some much needed band equipment. A banquet was held in May at which awards were given to all members. SKETCHESH AS WE PICTURE THEM First Row-Left to Right: C. Mignogna, M, J. Filino, C. Irwin, D. Loftreda, A. Dunsmore, E. Clinton This year for the first time in many years, the students of Pitcairn High School organized a mixed glee club. The addition of twenty-one male voices to the chorus resulted in one of the best glee clubs Pitcairn High School has ever had. The glee club, under the direction of Mr. Eugene Artac, rehearsed diligently to prepare for the annual Band and Glee Club Concert, which was held on March 28. The songs that they sang so beautifully were Hear My Pray- er, In a Monastery Garden, De Gospel Train, Stouthearted Men, The Bells of St. Mary, Anchors Away, Holla-le Holla-la, and The Marine's Hymn. On March 30 the glee club traveled to East McKeesport, where the chorus entertained the students and faculty of East McKeesport High with several selections. The glee club also participated in the Bac- calaureate service. The senior members ofthe chorus were pre- sented with pins as a symbol of their efforts to have a chorus of which everyone will be proud. lcft to Right: T. Flack, R. McCabe, V. Bolden, V. The three act com- edy was held on November 21 and 22 in the high school auditorium. Linda Rogers, a sixteen year old girl, is stood up by her boyfriend, Austin Farrell. For revenge Linda launches a campaign to get his rival, Hal Montgomery, the school's football hero, elected class president. Meanwhile, Austin apologizes to Linda and asks her to the formal dance election night. However, the school siren, Diana Gordon, decides to complicate matters by insisting Austin invite her to the dance. Hal Montgomery thinks Linda is wonderful and asks Linda to go to the dance with him. Somehow, he is talked into taking Diana Gordon. The night of the dance the situation becomes more and more involved. But all's well that ends well, and It's a Date ends well. The play was very successful and will long be remembered. The comedy is the story of Tom Butler, who acts as housewife because of his wife's posi- tion as a doctor. Tom is nominated for Mother of the Year by his friendly and well-meaning neighbor, Mrs. Hanson. His children, Julie and Doug, who are twins, and Julie's boyfriend, War- ren, are ashamed of this so-called honor. With their persuasion Dr. Ann Butler decides to de- vote more of her time to her family. She as- sumes the duties of a housewife with the help of her nurse, Pat Flanagan. Meanwhile, Hank, an ex-salesman, per- suades Tom to publish the songs that Tom com- posed in his spare time. With the assistance of Cal Pepper, a disc jockey, Miss Osbourne, a pub- lisher, and Cynthia Lewis, a popular singer, Tom becomes a successful composer. Patients of Dr. Butler, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Cran- field, and Mrs. Ames, and a policeman, Sergeant Lutzfelder, add to this mix-up of merriment. Lsft to Right: R, Bovst, V. After a scoreless first half, the Railroaders came through and Pitcairn won the game 20-O. The first home game of the season was played against East Pittsburgh. An early lead was taken by East Pittsburgh, but in the second halt Pitcairn scored twice. The game ended with Pitcairn on top by a score of i3-7. Showing grcat enthusiasm the Railroaders walked over a weak Snowden Township team with a i3-O victory. Three bus loads of students accompanied the team to this game which was played in South Park Stadium. In one of the top games of the season, two undefeated teams met in Pitcairn's dust bowl. When the dust cleared, both East McKeesport and Pitcairn had been eliminated from the class B championship race by a O-0 tie. -. 'Q - Once more Pitcairn returned to its winning form and scored twice to defeat Rankin 'I3-7. The only major injury of the 'season occurred when Jerry Borst had his collar bone broken in this game. With great expectations the Railroaders awaited the Wilmerding game. We were look- ing forward to upsetting the undefeated Wild- cats, but Pitcairn met its first deefat at the hands of Lou Nemec's team. The Pitcairn eleven tried hard but proved unequal to the Wilmerding team. Wilmerding won by a 20-O score. The next week Pitcairn met another unde- feated ball club, the Elizabeth Warriors. Eliza- beth defeated the Railroaders by a score of 25-13. Scoring in the first quarter, the Railroad- ers held the Washington Township squad score- less until the last period of the game. D, Borst blocked the importanttextra point, and Pitcairn won by a slim margin of 7-6. Our last game was with our traditional ri- vals, the Trafford Tomahawks. The Tomahawks came to Pitcairn with the idea of returning home victorious with our scalps under their belts and the victory bell in tow, and that is exactly what they did! The Trafford team beat Pitcairn by a 6-0 score. RAY BORST LLOYD LASHER GEORGE GOODLIN CHUCK ROSS , K 9 3 T-. .,.1 4'mQ?rif' J lf '15 X wa wr' Q 'iu,.-f 'lar i fi? Our players might have lacked height this year, but they never lacked the spirit. After los- ing our first leaque game to Elizabeth, our losing streak continued until we met East Pittsburgh. We then won two in a row, with victories over East Pittsburah and East McKeesport. Our next game was with Trafford, and we again lost. We lost the next five games, one of which was our return game with East Pittsburgh. We defeated East McKeesport for our third win of the season but lost our final games with Trafford and Glass- port. The three senior members of the squad were Wibby Cole, Chuck Overly, and Joe Rizzo. Chuck broke the school's record for number of points scored in one season. He scored 242 points.
