To Pass As WVise Men Do. -Unknown YVith a much louder hoot and a toot the Sophomore class once more joined the llailroad- ers train of 1951. The beginning of the school year found us wishing for more fuel in the fire. The train was going too slow for us. NVQ- knew we needed more activities to speed up the other llailroaders. YVcll, football season whizzed in and we saw the opportunity for more activities. At the home games it was the Sophomore class that furnished the lineups for the supporters of the Railroad- ers. On October 13 we sponsored a dance which was held in the gym. Then before we knew it the Thanksgiving holiday was coming up. VVe could not pass it without something special. So on November 21 we sold delicious home-made candy in the halls of P. H. S. Then. in prepara- tion for the prom next year. the girls began to teach the boys how to dance. Once a week both boys and girls met at the gvm. There under the supervision of Mrs. Linhart and Mr. Smith the girls taught the boys how to dance. ln the second semester Nlrs. Crowl took over Nlrs. Lin- hart's supervising. The boys were very co- operative and the girls found they learned 1'ead- ily. On February 15 the class held an assembly in the high school auditorium. Students picked by the class did a capable job in choosing the assembly program and directing it. These are a few of the activities the Sophomore Class con- tributed to the llailroaders train for 1951. But dances were not our only projects. The Sophomore class sent out a fine group of boys for football. XVe know that in time they will form one of the finest teams P. H. S. has ever had. After football season we had more boys out for basketball. A few made the varsity team while the other boys played for junior varsity. The bovs who were not on the football or basketball teams found other clubs and activities to join. Some joined the Chess Club while others partic- ipated in the Recreational Program. Left to right-Barbara Heaton, Hon DeVito, Jeanne Nlinniccucci, Dean llorst. Most of the Sophomore girls became new members of the Clee Club. This was their first year but they did very well. The majority of the girls belong to the Tri-Hi-Y. Other clubs which the girls took part in were the F. H. A. and the Recreational Program. In showing our thanks to the Student Coun- cil for their advice and guiding hand we helped them sell Christmas cards. Our two represen- tatives for Student Council were Pat Hallibaugh and Ron Serra. In their first year of cheering we think Virginia Hesking and Pat Hallibaugh deserve much credit. The class elected for their officers four capable students-President, Dean Borstg Vice-President, llon DeVitog Secretary, Barbara Heatong and Treasurer, Jennie Minicucci. There was much co-operation shown among the class, their officers, and the class sponsor Mr. XVilliam Smith. YVe all look forward next year to being the most successful Junior Class P. H. S. has yet known. Let to right-Lee Africa, Shirley DeYirgilio. Virginia uc gt, Janet Rrown. XVe of the freshman class came into P. H. S. full of ambition and anxiety to begin a new career. Immediately we elected our officers. president, Lee Africag vice president. Shirley De- Virgiliog secretary. lanet Browng and treasurer. Maxine De Yinnv. Thev certainly had done a wonderful job. NVanting this to be a year of rememlJrance. we pe1'formed many activities which included the sale of Curtis magazines, Dolores Lynn re- ceived a camera for selling the largest number of magazines. NVe sold Cargo Candy on which we received a percentage of the profits. VVe had a bake sale at Salyards Hardware Store on Broad- way, a dance at the gym. and we also sold Christ- mas cards through the student council. 'K FRESHM N . . . The True Beginning of Our End -Shakespeare Also the freshman class was well represent- ed in sports. On the football team were Edward Clinton and Russell Agostini. Lee Africa was the freshman student coach. The junior high basketball team consisted mainly of our fresh- man bovs. Thev were as follows: Russell Agos- tini. lim Stevick, Edward Clinton, Bob Moon. Lee Africa. Kenny Niignogna. Patsv Moffa, Al- fred Macino. and XVavne XValtour. Our basket- ball team won sixteen games and lost two games. At one of the games, we received the award plaque for the largest attendance. The freshman girls were members of the Tri-Ili-Y. They have all been working hard to earn money for their spring formal on April 18th. XVL- are represented in the band with twelve members. A group of them have formed their own jam session. The freshman, along with the other band members. have been work- ing ltard. rehearsing for their spring concert. A new subject has been entered on the fresh- man girls' curriculum. YVe are now taking six weeks of home nursing, which will be a very useful subject. Both the boys and girls have taken first aid and received their Junior Red Cross cards. The freshman class held their assembly for March. They presented two short plays entitled, The Persecuted Nlaidenf, and House Guest under the direction of Mrs. Bergman. As a whole, we of the freslnnan class have had a very active and exciting year and hope to do better in the following years. 64 77 jim WOM? ana! gnergefic 'i Q S ' ' A 41' 'P' bun FRESHMEN-Front Row-lI.vft tn riglxtl L. The Senior Class of 1952 presented as their annual class production, Vera and Ken Tarpley's play, The Little Dog Laughedf directed by Bliss M. Bernice Keefer. The plav deals with the psychology training Laurie Huntingdon has received in her two years of college. Laurie's father Sid Huntington is a used-car dealer and Ted Wood is his hated business rival. Martha, Laurieis mother is verv nervous about a tea she is planning to give. To this tea she has invited several influential and important women of the community. NVallv Huntington, Laurieis brother. further complicates matters by going steadv with Joan YVoods, the daughter of Ted XVoods, his fatheris rival. H 77 amine afoem Laurie is confident her training in psychol- ogv is sufficient to undertake the job of un- tangling her familvis troubles. These troubles include a much-needed loan from the bank which her father is afraid won't be approved. Laurie forced her family into taking various psychological tests. The plav is at its peak of laughter while Laurie is psvchoanalvziug her family. The family takes all thev can of Laurie's behavior and Hnallv take a drastic step to make her see what she has been doing. The plav had a fitting climax, and the little dog can still be heard laughing in the corners of the auditorium. 'J V JUNIOR PLAY CAST Front Row 41,1-ft lo right? Because of their capabilitv the Cllee Club has been called upon for appearences in assemblies anal for outside engagements. The annual concert was held on March 222. at the High School auditorium. The Clee Club, Band. and Majorettes participated in the concert which was a wonderful success. The chorus is under the superb direction of Mr. Artac. Mr. Artac has been a loyal leader of the Glee Club for three vears. Through active liarticipation the girls receive pins in their senior year. The senior girls will never forget the memorable time thev spent in the chorus. 33 Xin -Xitus oxin on thm ht lil of J iorettes lla-ft to rightl D mvmg. C. Al. Xlignogna. C. lr- n S. Keinerer. Nl. Also this vear. we have faithfully attended all our school foothall games. This year. we got our hand and music room. where previously we had used the present dav teachers room for practice. XVe had a hanquet, a spring concert. and were equipped with inauv new instruments. Then, also. a munher of the hand group went to a Pitt concert and a selected group to hand festivals and music concerts. This year we are also presenting our spring concert. XVe marched in the Nlemorial Dav parades. XVe are starting a new svstem of hand rehearsals in the morning. AIORETTE The majorettes have shown some very high steps in the past year. In the foothall games they have participated with great zeal. XYe have seen what they can do with their hatons and the rhythm in their feet. ln the spring concert they showed the audience an exhihit of their fine twirling and marching ability. I am sure that everyone had pride within them when our maiorettes strutted down the field leading our hand. XYith their cute uniforms and their shining tresses waving in the hreeze. we are sure they were ahout the nicest looking inajorettes a school could have. As the year passes and another has started we can he sure that they will he there to lead ns on to victory in whatever we may tackle. 8 jAQWL 111111 1111111 11111111 1 IX ll ,LN 1 1 X1111 1111, 1111111 1 1 NN 1 1 1 S 111 11 Q l I1 1 IX 11 1 I If I ll X 1 XX INL 1 S 11 I N I 1 N X I 1 1 1 L 111 II 111111311 1 1 1 101 S111 X 1 1 1111 1 111 11 ll 1 ll 1 1 1 IIN 111 1 11111 1111 IN 1 X IINIL 1 l,lj.,IIl ll 1 1 Il 111111 111111 Il Ix 1 Ill 1 1 1 I1 II 1 1 8111111111111 11 111 Q -I ' If: -.aI '1' 111-:II,'I1a1s .' --' J - XI.111 .-X11 .1111111 'AII1-111.1111-1 1 111- 1 11.11 IA' 1.11112 1111:1'1'11111I1 H1311-111 1711111111-1 .11111 cIIll'l'I'1 C111- Il.lllI 11111111111-11I11'I1I1-1' .' 111 112111 X11 I1-1-11-1' 'I'I1.11 111-1-11111: 11111 11-11 .' This vear the team was one of the best Pitcairn ever had. One of the most important reasons for this enthusiasm was the excellent team work. All the bovs co- operated with each other to make a winning team. VVe followed our team through many vic- tories and were really filled with enthusiasm when we inet the VVilmerding VVildcats. After the terrific blow of losing the game to Wilmer- ding with a score of 25 to 0, our spirits were low. but certainly did not 1'emain so!! We had gained our spirits back again to be victor of Elizabeth, VVashington Township, and Trafford for the second time. We all agree that its HATS OFF TO OUR TEAM!!! EIGHT WINS . . O E LO S Pitcairn started a successful season by de- feating their long time rivals Trafford. Pitcairn came ahead and scored four touchdowns but failed to make anv extra points. The ltailroaders kept right on winning by dumping East Pittsburgh 18-6. lt was the first game plaved at East Pittsburgh on their new field. The field was muddy, but spirits were high and we won again. Pitcairn played Snowden at the first home night game. The Hailroaders were victors again by the score of 26-0. :Xt the club after the game our enthusiasm was still at its peak. The year looked good! The following Saturday. Pitcairn went On Top Of Old Smokeyv to plav East NIcKeesport. Un a perfect day for football, Pitcairn defeated the Hilltoppers 27-7. Joe XVareham made the plav of the dav as he scored a touchdown on a kickoff. Tension was mounting bv the time Pitcairn met Rankin. All eyes of the Valley were on the Railroaders and the YVildcats, but Pitcairn still held firmlv to their undefeated record as they beat Rankin 26-6. Finally the dav arrived! The day we had waited for, was cold and bleak. The girls wore long white shirts to the club and the bovs or- ganized one of the best snake dances we ever had. The eve of the game was exciting and tense. Friday night. found standing room only at XVestinghonse Nlemorial High School Field. It was an even match the first half. The lop- sided score by the end of the game would indi- cate that Pitcairn was XVihnerding's pushover. The Pitcairn Eleven lcd by McCloskey and Klon- ahan Co-Captains tried hard. and the 25-0 score showed nothing of Pitcairn's stubborn determin- ation and team spirit. :Xt Elizabeth. Pitcairn again came ahead in traditional stvle by winning the seventh game of the season. This showed that our spirits were still tops even though we had lost our previous game. After the game, Coach Klausing said YVa- shington Twp. was our toughest game. Those who saw the game agreed. lt was a nip and tuck battle the whole way. The great play of the eve- ning occurred when. with little time remaining. Keelev intercepted a pass. .-Xfter that Horst and NIL-Closkev wrapped it up for the Railroaders 19-13. Pitcairn went to Trafford for their last and coldest game of the year. The longest run was made by Nlcffloskey, it was a 90 yard run. Corl intercepted three passes and ran one back for 60 yards. This was the seniors last game and they won it 26-0. First Squad Football l95l. Front How QL1-it to right? C. Curl. lt. llolden, B. Monahan, B. Cliieffo, T. Keeley, B. Flory. P. Dc-Bone. P. Pitcairn lligh downed Derrx' Boro. Swickley Twice. Sharps- burg. and XVashington Twp. all in a row. Then we faced Elizabeth after a hard fought game. Our team took VVilmerding 59 to 49 which was probably the best game thev played all year. After XVilmerding we lost to Edgewood. but onlx' to win two in a row over East Pittsburgh. and East NlcKeesport. bad luck then overcame the team and we suifered a loss to Trafford and Classport. Our second game with Elizabeth was a victory. However we lost to YVilmerding and Edgewood in the second games with these teams. Exciting victories followed this loss when we plaved East Pittsburgh. East McKeesport and Trafford. Even though our team ended the season with its second loss to Classport. we feel our basketball team was a great success this year and we are reallv proud of the kids-Hats oil Boys!! Klausing the junior high team had a very successful year with a 16-3 record and the most games ever played in junior high. The team went all the way to the championship and won the section two years in a row. Although they lost the championship hy a close game of 31-30 in favor of East McKeesport, they deserve a lot of credit winning 13 straight games. There were six regulars as freshmen, they were Lee Africa, Edward Clinton, Bob Shearer, Iames Stevick, Ken Nlignogna. But next year they will he back to grab the section again and keep up the fine record again under the coach- ing of Mr. Klausing.
