We entered into the various activities, organized our class and had our first party in the Gym. VVe shall always remember our Sophomore year and our great pre- sentation of Iulius Caesar , on Class Day. This year, too, we had a party and sponsored an Assembly. The following year we were extremely active in presenting a Junior Play, a part of which funds purchased an upholstered chair for the stage properties. VVe held a dance, class party, semi-formal dance for the Seniors, and party for four classmates who entered the service. In our Senior year we plunged into presenting the Class Play, put- ting on an Assembly, selling food at football games, sponsoring our Annual, holding a Class party and dance. We presented a set of spot lights to the High School to show our gratitude and so that the class of ,46 will not be forgotten in Dear P. H. VVe were no longer babies but were ufreshiesi, in the high school. It seemed so enormous after grade school, and it took quite a while for us to learn our way around. Our Freshmen year was a busy one-get- ting initiated into the school, clubs and various other organizations. Oh! Those initiations, we shall never forget them. VV e have our unforgettable memories of that year, namely, the many enjoyable assembly pro- grams, dances, and our Freshmen Class party. Before any of us realized it, the school year was Hnished. Nineteen forty-four found us no longer the babies of the school, but Sophomores. There were a few new faces of students who had come down from Patton Township. The Sophomores had a class party at the Community Club, which was a real success. We also sponsored a dance at the gym, everyone had a wonderful time. Many of our students participated in the Minstrel and Operetta, and we found out just how talented some of our classmates were. VVe were very proud of DeLorse Barber and Kitty Lou McNeil when they were chosen as cheerleaders. With all the excitement of foot- ball and basketball games, dances, plays, etc., the school year came to a happy end. Nineteen forty-five was a Very important year in our high school lives. After we got our Retrospect GR CLASS LOOKS FORWARD school rings, everyone in the junior Class could be seen polishing his ring a dozen times a day. There was a lot of hand waving, but just to show the rings off. We contributed 9 football and 7 basketball players to the school teams. The Singiser broth- ers were a great pair on the basketball floor. The juniors sold magazines to raise nioncy for the ever traditional junior-Senior prom. We made a net profit of 3196.11 We also sponsored a dance at the gym for the purpose of obtaining money for the prom. In thc middle of December we juniors had our class party at the junior Community Club. It was acclaimed a success by everyone present. Toward the latter part of the year, the jun- iors presented a play entitled 'KQuiet Pleasefl The play was a comedy which took place out of doors. Each member of the cast played his part very well. The play was not only a finan- cial success, but a great entertainment. The high-light of the year was the Prom which was held on Friday, May 10, at the Edge- wood Country Club. Ben Bodenis Orchestra played for the occasion. The night was perfect for a prom, and everyone who attended is anx- iously awaiting the time he can go to his second prom. lt was a night that will never be for- gotten by any of us. We juniors now look forward to next year, when we shall be Seniors, the upperclassmen of Pitcairn High School. -28 THE PROSPECT OF BECOM NG SENIORS lst row-Mick, Coral, Por- ter, Lake, Antimarino, Paint- er, Rhodes, Ciecotelli, Rob- erts, Helpy, Buccelln. 2nd row - Scarbrough, Ciccotelli, Shank, De Virig- lio, Pregano, Caputo, Cicco- telli, De Letis, Gardner, Car- rier. 3rd row Cuuto Gcor e 1 11 a ' SU Troy, Kelly, Bucella, Wil- son, Schuetz, Thompson Daughenhough. 4th row--Virtus, Schmitt, Thurn, McKelvey, Hay, luck X'ICA1l'1I1 H sonf House- - 1 Y, Y B, holder, Roberts. lst row-McCabe, Helpy Alter, Dahlstrom, Brendlinj ger, Campbell, Kemerer , Polce, Barber, Jones, Wards- Worth, Arnanteu. 2nd row-Latherow, Mc- Neill, Showers, Root, Muel- ler, Sant, Foucks, Skiles, XVhiteheud, Hoff, Riffle. It seems only like yesterday, yet two whole years have already passed, and we are now at the mid-point of our high school career. But to start at the begin- ning, as every history should- A few weeks after we arrived, when a little of the green had faded from behind the ears, we began to enjoy high school life, its work, activi- ties, the little freedom we were allowed, it wasnit too lcng before we went gout on a limbv and openedly declared we thought our teachers were pretty good scoutsfi For a freshman class we did fairly well. YVe organized a Freshman Junior Varsity foot- ball tcam, contributed several players to the Senior Varsity, and were well represented on the Varsity Basketball Squad. But let us not forget the girls! They, too, did their share in contributing to the activities of the school. Many joined the Tri Hi Y Club and attended the basketball games in a body. The girls also sponsored several parties, including a Christmas party at the Y.M.C.A., were ardent workers in promoting a formal dance, and also gave a rous- ing farewell party to ten of the older boys who were leaving to join the Navy. As is usually the case with freshmen classes Cwe discovered this later onl, our class led the entire school in ticket sales for the Minstrel and Revue, junior and Senior Plays, and the Operetta. Seven of our members sat on the Student Council that year. a fine showing for a freshman class. As the year drew to a close, we were able to look back on our first year in P.H.S. with memories of many good times. The class officers were VVayne Boyd, Presi- dent, Louis Mastro, Vice President, Bernice Mar- sula, Secretary, and Ioan McClain, Treasurer. Miss Rita Kenney was the class adviser. VVe began our Sophomore Year with a feel- ing of belonging to the school. As freshmen we had plenty of school spirit but were still a little shy and backward. But as Sophomores we felt we really were a part of the school. Mr. VVilliam, Smith was elected class adviser. Again this year we participated to a great extent in school ath- letics. Three of our classmates earned berths on the first team in football. Basketball came around, and we are proud to say that five of our boys played on the Varsity. Several new clubs were organized by the Sophomores. A Printing Club, which was sorely needed in P.H.S., was started by six sophomo1'e boys under the advisorship of Mr. Smith. These boys printed signs for the dances, for the bas- ketball and football games, and for all school performances. The girls organized a combina- tion Freslunen-Sophomore Tri Hi Y, thereby c1'e- ating a pleasant relationship between the two classes. For the Sophomore Assembly Program, we presented a very interesting movie, 'cAbraham Lincolnf, on Lincolnis birthday. This movie, in addition to being educational, brought many laughs from the student body. A very successful Sophomore party was held in March at the Ir. Community Center. In March also we held a recording dance to raise funds for the Junior Prom. But do not think activities were our sole interest. An interesting fact about our outstand- ing class is that we provided twenty-eight of the seventy-five honor students in the High School. Letis keep up this record, Class of '48. It is something to be proud ofll Retrospect -- 81 THE FRESHMEN CLASS WVhen this group of students, calling them- selves Freshmen, entered Pitcairn High, the School had many thoughts. Would these stu- dents prove themselves worthwhile, or would they be the usual group of pests? But these Freshmen entered P.H.S. with one idea-to be successful. They had their first chance when the annual Minstrel came along. Dwight Altman, one of the endmen, played his part in real minstrel style. Ellis Boyd played uliewpiev, the Dean of Wise College, in the Review. Other Freshmen talent was distributed throughout the choruses in the Review. The Freshmen sold more tickets to the Min- strel and the Operetta, Tune Inv, than any other class in the High School. Each time they were rewarded with an afternoon holiday. To this day, they wonder whether it was their school spirit or the half-holiday which urged them to work so hard. The Freshmen musicians who have served either in the band or orchestra are: Clifford Simpson, Donald Lukehart, Willis Fowkes, Wil- liam Ross, Douglas Stroschein, Donald Fails, and Lloyd Harter. In all performances there must be a stage crew and they have six Freshmen boys on the present crew. They are: Dick Randall, Robert VVarden, Melvin McKowen, Ronald Kuster, and Donald Cwillim. They don,t like to brag, but these boys are very good stage hands. On the subject of sports, the Freshmen again made a good showing. Their football players were Ronald Kuster, Harry Jackson, Dale Lake, and Melvin McKowen. The Freshmen, with the help of the Iuniors, were responsible for chartering a bus to take the students to the Mount Pleasant, night-football game. Their basketball players were Lloyd Harter, Charles Mignogna, Danny Mignogna, and Tony Ferarro. A group of Freshmen girls belonging to the Tri-Hi-Y, worked in shifts collecting money for the Infantile Paralysis Fund. They were sta- tioned at the bank, and on Wall Avenue. On March 15, 1946, the Freshmen had their Class Party. Since it was near Saint Patrickis Day, the Cym was decorated with green and white crepe paper streaming across the ceiling. As a whole, the gym really had that Irish touch. At the party the students played cards or chess and danced to the recordings of Steve Turchan. Everyone enjoyed the lunch of sandwiches, pop, ice cream, and cookies. The main event of the evening was the cake walk. Margie Donahue won the cake, and Ellis Boyd, the Class Presi- dent, won a box of candy. This is the first time in years that the Fresh- men have been included in the Year Book. The class bought the necessary number of books to receive the privilege. With the end of the year drawing near, the Freshmen have settled them- selves and demand a little respect from their upper-classmen. Youill have to admit that the Freshmen of 49i' have established a good per- manent record for P. H. S.
