“But oh, for the touch of a vanished hand And the sound of a voice that is still.” . . . Tennyson Faculty and students of Pisgah High School were shocked and grieved to hear of the death of Mrs. Martha Matthews on February 5, 1967. Only those who had the privilege of working with Mrs. Matthews through the years at Canton High School can fully realize the great loss which the school suffered at her passing. Students had grown accustomed to seeing her friendly smile early each morning as she stood beside the door that was always open for a social chat or a word of guidance on some personal or aca¬ demic problem. Her interest in each individual was keenly felt and appreciated. During her many years of service to Canton High School, Mrs. Matthews contributed in a variety of ■ways to the success of the school. Coming as a teacher of maUiematics and director of the Glee Club and Choral Group, she soon became well known in the community as she and her husband, the director of the band, provided musical programs on all occasions. Her work with the Student Council continued for many years, and as sponsor of the Junior Class she helped to provide numerous gala events. Wherever she could be of assistance, Mrs. Matthews willingly gave of her time and energy. Nov; her place is vacant. Life goes on outwardly the same, but for those of us who knew her well she will continue to live in memory and her influence will abide.
