[JAe [Annual Senior ScJioof Can on, OCorA Garofina presenis U£e CPisqahieer SCineieen 3Tunc recf ancf Six y Seoen Jo fume I 1 H Pisgah Senior High School was Hrst a dream of every parent in Haywood County: that his c would have the finest education possible. But soon, this came into being when it was decided to consolidate seven high schools, Canton, Bethel, Fines Creek, Waynesville, Crabtree, Clyde, and Reynolds, into two new county high schools. The school board and superintehdents begaptyork in 1964. The sites were chosen, architectural drawings were selected, and even names for the two Schools were announced. The school in east Haywood becarhe Pisgah Senior High School. In August, 1966, the six-building high school was not entirely completed. But still, our faculty moved in three days before the sophomores, juniors, and seniors to really bring life to P.H.S. They accomplished registration very efficiently and tried to keep outof the workmen’s way. They were now ready to greet the first Pisgah High students. And the students ? The students were most eager to have a look at this much talked about and long anticipated school. Since the construction crew had forbidden any exploration on registration day, there were few students who had seen the new school. Over ' 900 students were soon roaming about, consulting maps, and inquiring directions from the hospi¬ tality committee. After the first day, there were many tired students from so much walking, much bewilderment, and a few mixed-up schedules. But there was one thing all the students agreed upon, that they had the best school in the state. As classes began, activities also started. With the reorganization of clubs. The clubs were mainly carried over from the four schools. Eighteen clubs were reorgan¬ ized and with P.H.S. came a few new clubs. Pisgah also saw the formation of annual and paper staffs. The annual became THE PISGAHTEER, and the paper became THE BRUIN TRAIL. The beginning of activities at P.H.S. really made the consolidation of the schools much easier. With the coming of fall, P.H.S. began to look to foot¬ ball. An exciting Season followed, and the student: body spw their boys come home with the State 3 A championship. In basketball, our boys and girls were two of the best and roughest teams in the state. In all sports,; the hmietes played hard and brought honor to the school. By consoli¬ dating not only in body and mind but also ip spirit, our athletic program made all the studePtS , feel proud to spy that they were from Pisgah, pot from Bethel or Canton or Reynolds or Clyde, but Pisgah! . ■ ’ together witha --—- without each individual’s effort. Despite the fact that no band camp was held this year and that the Pis- gah High bandroom was not completed, causing the mem¬ bers to have to go back and forth from Pisgah to the Canton Junior High bandroom for practice, the Band of Bears gave an excellent performance in half-time shows during the football season. They also followed our team to the away games and to the Western Division Championship playoff at Burlmgton. Mr. Larry Raines was given the task of organizing the instrumentalists into one functional unit, and has done an excellent job. Our thanks go to him for helping to make Pisgah ' s Band of Bears the number one band. 1 12 The Pisgah High School ' s band performed at half-time at every football game. Showing In Their First Year They continued to give this excellent perform¬ ance in numerous parades and at their Christmas concert. Tennyson Faculty and students of Pisgah High School were shocked and grieved to hear of the death of Mrs. Martha Matthews on February 5, 1967. Only those who had the privilege of working with Mrs. Matthews through the years at Canton High School can fully realize the great loss which the school suffered at her passing. Students had grown accustomed to seeing her friendly smile early each morning as she stood beside the door that was always open for a social chat or a word of guidance on some personal or aca¬ demic problem. Her interest in each individual was keenly felt and appreciated. During her many years of service to Canton High School, Mrs. Matthews contributed in a variety of ■ways to the success of the school. Coming as a teacher of maUiematics and director of the Glee Club and Choral Group, she soon became well known in the community as she and her husband, the director of the band, provided musical programs on all occasions. Her work with the Student Council continued for many years, and as sponsor of the Junior Class she helped to provide numerous gala events. Wherever she could be of assistance, Mrs. Matthews willingly gave of her time and energy. Nov; her place is vacant. Life goes on outwardly the same, but for those of us who knew her well she will continue to live in memory and her influence will abide. I !
