Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1974 volume:

I SEEM TO BE afloat on a sea of frustration. Prepare for tomorrow,” the voices say, “but do it in a world of yesterday.” Piqua Central High School Piqua, Ohio far- Hurry to history but don't forget your boots. W l.carn to appreciate art in a basement. Rush to get a place in the lunch line. Stand and wait for twenty minutes. tat before the bell rings if you can find a scat. team in a pint-si cd gym. Grasp physics lab built WWI. nuclear in a before Attempt to escape from orchestra an a you can. Elbow your way to class, I love this old school in spite of its inadequacies. A school is more than a building it is people. The friends made here and the teachers who gave inspiration will always be fond memories. But just as humans reach the end of their productivity, time has run out on our old school. It can go on for a while with reduced pressure as a junior high, but even that time is limited. I want to he ready for the future, but the past has held me back. It's too late for me. but how about my children? Will modern education be ready for them? I seem to bedreaming It was a good try. We wanted to show Piqua that we believed in the need for a new school. So we marched, not for our own benefit, but for the future students in our town. We were all there the sports teams, the band, the clubs, the teachers, students from every aspect of Piqua Central. School pride spread through us like fire: is made us shout louder and hold our banners higher. Our efforts were in vain, but we hope that we kindled a spark that will light the way for a better future. 6 Crisp aulumn smells carried by the wind brought the thought of Homecoming to the minds of Piqua Central students. Homecoming was theirs to anticipate, theirs to enjoy. They elected Jill Marrs Homecoming Queen. For her court they chose seniors Connie Baker and Kris Lange. Chris Burch and Jill Cron were junior class candidates, and Missy Cox and Cheryl Young represented the sophomores. Homecoming festivities began with a parade organized by Key Club. Then, under a golden harvest moon, the Piqua Indians reaped a 28-20 victory from Springfield Catholic, a victory that was overshadowed by the injury of P.H.S. co-captain. Tom Stein. At the Sweetest Day Gala Dance given by Student Council the students moved to the music of “Nightshade.” It was an experience for them all a Homecoming experience. 10 CONTENTS REACHING REFLECTING li I seem to be involved. Every day I run from one club meeting to another, or from play practice to pep band practice. I never get the sufficient hours of sleep. I never get the suggested daily vitamin requirements. 1 may be lacking in iron, but I've certainly got enough to do. I've got to sell spirit buttons for Student Council, Christmas wrapping paper for Junior Achievement, and tickets for the musical. Then there's a chess club meeting and a language club banquet I can't miss. No wonder my parents are always yelling, “Why do you get so involved? I ask myself the same question. Is it for prestige or my ow n self-satisfaction? Or am I really a useful, productive member of this organization? I just don't know. The only thing I am certain of is that I have to be involved. I need to be working beside others. I need to be sharing the laughter and the pride that comes from a job w ell done. Yes, I'm involved right up to niv INVOLVEMENT tom THE PRICE IS RIGHT This event is the annual Piquonian skit, which kicks off the sale and promotion of yearbooks. “I wonder what will happen this year . “Wasn't Scott Pearce hilarious as Mr. Stutler? . “Will it be as funny as last year?”, “I really thought that was Miss Butt instead of Eric Davis.” These were the comments of the audience as they awaited this year’s skit. No one expected to sec a 115 lb. pig on stage, but it happened thanks to Jim Heater and friends. Scott Kingrey played a perfect Mr. Wallach. and Ron Perkins looked just like Miss Andrews from behind. Mr. Stutler made a repeat performance. Wesley Westfall portrayed Miss McCorkle to a tee. and Julie Hcmm look a couple, three, four seconds to come from the balcony as Mr. Montgomery. But no one will forget the voluptuous models played b Mike Paler. Steve Moniaci. and Mark Yenney. and the outstanding performance of Kent Asher as a sexy night club singer. “Come on down. Eli! There is one event at Piqua Central which yearly involves the entire school. Occasional!) it involves teachers who would rather not be a part of it. “The Price is Right” was the inspiration for the skit written by Leslie Tyler, w ith many of the female members of the staff participating in commercials. It's the girls from Tidy Bowl W ally bids for Emma Hohcndorf. 16 You arc my yearbook, my only yearbook. You make me happy when skies arc gray. Aw. crap! I come in the form of a cheerleader, a decorated locker, or the deafening roar of a Saturday night basketball crowd. It is not easy for a young person to make a decision to leave his home and his friends in order to spend a whole year in another county, in an environment which is new for him. But that is also an excellent opportunity to experience a different life-style, to get acquainted with new people, and to try to live and work with them. My name is Ivan Naumov, and I come from Skopje. Yugoslavia. Here is Piqua I live with the John Roemer family. My stay in Piqua as well as my senior year schooling at Piqua Central will soon he over. I look back to the months past, and I find them unforgettable, a very valuable experience of my life. I am never going to forget the friendly town of Piqua. the Piqua Central High School, and all the people that I had the opportunity, to meet here. It came to me stronger than ever that people. I regardless of where they come from are only, and only, people: they are all human. I tried to understand the Piqua people and to be understood by them. • I tried to live as a part of this community. It wasn't always easy to adjust to the new way of life, but I tried, and the friends that I made helped me. Now. at the end of my stay I can say that I learned a lot of new things, exchanged a lot of thoughts, and I'll leave with the feeling that Piqua will always stay in my heart. Maybe, some day. I'll come to visit Piqua again. (I hope there is going to be a new high school building by then.) I have been Piqua now for several months. Everything in the beginning was very different because in Brazil I live in a city with 7 million people, but now I'm getting used to Piqua. The school was my first friend, and in the school I found my best friends. The school activities are much bigger here, and I never worked and read so much in my life before. The only thing I think is that all Americans work too much, but I think the truth is that I’m too lazy. I love my family, the Shanelys. very much, and I know I will miss them and my friends a lot when I go back to my country. Connie Ronn is my name. 30 OTHER PLACES Dcise (Daysi) Morcira is my name. I'm from Parana (south of Brazil). I am living for six months with the Fesses (the name of my “mean” father is Boh Lee I-ess), and I can say they are a real lovely family. At Piqua Central I'm meeting many people (cute ones!!!) that are helping me in many things. When I arrived I didn't know what is a cheer club because I don’t have in my country, and I’ve made some mistakes that some people didn't understand, but lvjro quilar from Guuiemulj I hope now everything has become clear. Some people have asked me if I want to live here or go back, and I say that my or your country aren’t the best: they are just different. and in my way of feeling both are wonderful! I think this is such an interesting experience to see a different way of life and thought, a beautiful country and nice people. I hope some day to come back to visit and see you again. C arlox Sochj Iron) (iuu(cn).il.i I am Xavier GaKis from Call. Colombia. I am 17 years old. and I live in Piqua with the John Pearce family. I have had an unforgettable year because I live the American life, and it is different from how I thought it was. I learn to live it. but I do not like alot. America is a great country, and I have spent a happy year in it. 31 Smoke Signals Advisor James Hardman displays his authority. Photographer: M Johnson llditorial Staff: A. Clevenger: Editor, M. Their castle was the Piqua Last Mall, and their ladics-in-wailing were Jill Cron. Chris Burch. Barb Keed. Robin Maniaci. and Mareie Sherer. Knights in shining armor were Steve Moniaci. Wendell Willcox, Jim Stein. Mike Faler and Dan Cavender. Sound like a fairy tale? It was for the participants of the 1974 Junior-Senior Prom held May 11th. Carnival games, balloons, and acomadadores dressed as little children surrounded the dancers. This atmosphere plus the music of Sunava provided an evening that will never be forgotten. The signs of summer were there except for one thing. But if you stopped for a moment, you could feel it a summer bree e. 57 The hand performs at Ihc Fairborn Band Contest. Majorettes: Bottom I.. I tell my feet to cool it to wait till 3:15 and the rush on the restrooms, where 20 million other marching feet will be getting into blue jeans and old shoes. Yes, it's marching band season again that hot, sticky, frustrating, repetitive, crazy, laughable, ingenious, noisy, musical, watched-over (by Mr. S. standing high atop a sliding board w ith his w hite broad-brimmed hat on his head), feet-fracturing. brain-bursting, spirit-soaring, comrade-creating, syncopated, prccisioncd time. But it's all worth it. I know because when I'm out on the Held and the music begins to swell in me like a fountain, high and strong, yet. fragile and beautiful, 1 cry from the goodness of it all. These classes are open to girls and boys who would like to work as a secretary after graduating from high school, or to go on to college for further education in the secretarial field. Basic skills, such as shorthand, accounting, typing, and filing are taught in the junior year, while perfecting these skills is stressed in the senior year. One aspect that sets these classes apart from other business classes is that they arc taught in a block, meaning the students remain in the same room all morning. Features such as eating out. 10-minute breaks, and the use of a coffee machine also help to simulate an office type experience. Teachers for the Stcno program arc Mr. Tyler and Miss Buckloh. Playing more as a team than a club, the Chess team organized for their second year at Central. Officers elected were: B. Huseman. Pres.: B. Stephan, V. Pres.; R. Blankly, Sec.; and S. Anthony. Treas.; Mr. McConahay acted as advisor for the club. Four tournaments which Piqua participated in this year were the Fairmont West tournament (placing 23th and 28th), the Vandalia-Butler tournament (4th and 12th), the Piqua tournament (6th, 13th, and 15th), and the State tournament at Columbus where they finished 48th. Either next year or the following year, the team hopes to gel into a league. The other club that has emerged at Central is the Bike Club. Because of the weather, the club didn't get going until spring. The President and Vice-President for this years' club are M. Alexander and A. Jacomct, respectively. Plans for the future include bike races and possibly a Houston-to-Piqua bicycle ride. Advisor for the club is Mr. Young. 62 1974 Chess Club: From Row B. Woods. E. Cantor. B. Stephan. S. Anthony. R. The business is set up. stock certificates are issued, products are produced and then sold. Rent and taxes are paid and 10 7 dividends are paid to stockholders. Money is donated to various organizations, as was the case when SI 75 was donated to the Xenia Relief Fund. A main event that JA participated in was the Trade Fair, held at the Dayton Mall. Piqua JA, along with 75 other Dayton area JA's displayed and sold their products. Christmas wrapping paper, pins, hangers, Easter eggs, and popcorn were some of the products sold during the year. Over $2000 worth of products were sold, with nine salesman on the Century Club list which are sales that total over $100. Luke Bolin was named top salesman of the company. In 1927, Sidney. Troy, Miamis-burg. Greenville and Xenia joined Piqua in forming the league. Teams such as Fairvicw. Fairmont, Oakwood. Fairborn and Urbana joined through the years. Between 1953 and 1964 the MVL was one of the most exciting leagues in the state. Piqua and Sidney w ill join the Miami Central Conference after one year of independent play. Other teams in the new loop will be Oakwood. Miamis-burg. Vandalia-Butler, Fairborn Baker and Park Hills. Trotwood-Madison and West Carrollton. But now it looks dead serious to us and we hope to you. A yearbook is supposed to reflect each particular year-to convey the feeling of BEEN DREAMING the year so that in the future each book can pinpoint a particular year in memory. We hope no student or teacher of Piqua Central forgets that 1974 was the year when his hopes for better education in Piqua were cast aside by the many voters of Piqua who were more concerned with their ow n selfish ideas than with the young, people of its tow n. June 7. 1974 Dear Mrs. Wilson When ou look at this book, will it remind you of the parking ticket we got in Cincinnati? Or the hassle we had over the cover? Or the time we had to take 100 Gotcha stickers off- P.U.S.’s crumbling walls? (It probably would've kept them up longer.) What about the time Mr. Miller didn't show up with Tom Goffs pictures of Brigadoon. and everybody nearly had a nervous breakdown? And all the things that we lost in the filing cabinet and all the croppers that we broke (at SI5 a piece). Do you remember the way Scott Kingrey cut up your driving? (Though, that isn't half as bud as your compulsive doodling.) What about the day we got our first proofs back? We were so proud. Then there were all the headaches, all the decisions, all the work, and all the laughter. (We did laugh alot. didn't we?) Will you remember? We will. For always. So. even though the yearbook experts disapprove of this, we dedicate the 1974 Piquonian to you. Fondly, Kim Ann
