UUR O EH U DRETH ANNIVERSARY HE class of 1963 is the one-hundredth class to be graduated from Piqua Central High School. It is for this reason that these two pages at the end of the senior section of this annual are dedicated to the class of 1963. It is fitting at this time to give a brief history of Piqua Central High School. There have been three public high schools built since the mid 185O,s-all on the present location, at the intersection of High and College Streets, in the central part of our city. The construction of the first high school was started in 1854, on land secured from Mathew Caldwell, and the building was completed in 1856. It was a three story building, housing the sixth through the twelfth grades. A. C. Chambers was Piquais first high school principal and superintendent. The second high school was built in 1884, while C. W. Bennett was super- intendent. This building also contained three stories. The present building was erected in 1914 during the administration of George C. Dietrich. This building is, like the others in the past, a three story structure. In 1938, a major remodeling program took place in which many changes were made on the second and third floors. In 1949, under the administration of C. M. Sims, an extension was added to the rear of the building. This included the Trades and lndustry Department and the music room. In the spring of 1955, construction began for a new Physics Laboratory and Chemistry Laboratory and the music room was expanded as a result. This 1955 construction took place during the administration of YV. F. Hoerner. The 1963 seniors can look back one hundred years, trace the history of their school and relate it to others with pride.
