Now we are leaving these doors for the last time, but with us we will carry many pleasant memories of the best years of our life. Having received excellent training from the teachers of our Alma Mater, we know that we are well prepared to face the future and fulfill our obligations to the world. We depart from P. H. S. with a feeling of sadness in our hearts but as we face a bright and prosperous future this sadness is lifted and a smile once again returns to our faces. Various projects were underway throughout the year to raise money for the junior-Senior Party, held june 4, and to provide a reserve for senior-year expenses. Several class committees were busy during the spring, working out details of this most important social event ofthe school year. Several projects undertaken to make money were: a cookie sale, a bake sale, a sales-tax stamp drive, and the operation of a refreshment stand at the district band and orchestra contest. The class play, Paint the Town Pinkf, presented March 15, was the largest project attempted. Under the direction of Robert S. Richardson, a large cast of juniors presented this three act comedy in such a way as to entertain a capacity audience and prove financially successful. The keystone bears at its base the letters SU, CH, L , and S , symbolizing these four objectives. The National Honor Society is an honorary organization for juniors and seniors who excel in these four fields. Competition for membership into this organization is keen, as only fifteen per cent of any graduating class may be elected. Five percent of these members may be elected during their junior year and the remainder during their senior year. Formal initiation for the senior members was an impressive candlelight service held in an assem- bly before the student body. The informal initiation was held in May following the combined banquet of National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll. At this same time, junior members received their formal initiation. T. A., under the supervision of Miss Joyce Kelly, became a chartered member of the National Future Teachers of America. This club is made up of high school seniors who plan to continue their studies in the field of education. Members of the local chapter were dismissed from their regular classes in order that they be permitted to observe teaching in the grade and subject of their preference. This project was carried out on February 5, and was limited entirely to the Piqua School System. Members thus became better acquainted with the profession of their choice. The club also gave a donation to the P. T. A. Scholarship Fund which is used to finance the college education of pupils planning to enter the teaching profession. The money for this donation was earned by selling refreshments at the Music Ensemble Contest held in our high school. They also ushered at such events as the Band and Orchestra Concert, the Choir Concert, the Three Une-Act Plays, Class Night, Baccalaureate, and Com- mencement. This group offers an opportunity to give recognition to scholastic attainment early in the high school career. Some of the duties ofthe student librarian are to check books in and out and to take library attendance. At the beginning ofthe year, they dust books and shelves and make new pockets and cards for books in order to prepare the library for student use. These girls collect an absentee slip from each classroom each period. Using this information, they quickly determine whether any pupil is not in his assigned classroom. If a pupil appears to be misplaced, they run the necessary errands to get him properly located. In addition to the above duties, they deliver messages from the office to pupils in their various classrooms, when necessary. This group of girls renders a very worthwhile service to Piqua High School. Murals depicting many different Christmas scenes were also painted and hung in the lobby of the high school. Club members made posters for the football and basketball games and helped in the making of scenery for the class plays. However, being in the Art Club was not all work, because the members enjoyed an excursion trip to Cincinnati, a picnic, and a costume party. They also prepared an afternoon tea for the faculty. This is done through the exclusive use of the French language during meetings and through individual reports given by members. This year, these reports were based on the general geography of France the major French cities, and the important historical figures. Also, playlets in French were presented by several members. 'Kl.e Cercle Francais had the honor of having three guest speakers. They were Miss Helen Kopf, who showed slides on France, Miss Hulda Heller, who showed slides of Paris and the surrounding countryside, and Mr. Gustav Wincent, who spoke on the central European countries. During the evening of Friday, March 28, these same groups presented a con- cert for the general public. Both programs were given in the high school auditorium. Each band member participated in a sectional rehearsal once each week which better prepared him to serve the organi- zation as a whole. The band received a superior rating from all four judges at the district band and orchestra contest held at Piqua on March ZZ. At the state contest which was held at Columbus, on April 26, the band received an excellent rating. In order to become a member, a girl must earn 300 points by participating in individual or team sports. Some team sports are volleyball, basketball, alley soccer, and badminton. Individual sports include hiking, swimming, skating, bicycle riding, and horseback riding. When a girl joins the club she receives an emblem and a certificate of member- ship. Those members who earn 500 points receive a letter. A charm is the highest award which can be earned by a member of the 300 club.
