W LWMMW., mph? hm I HE Annual Staff of 1957 wishes to dedicate this Piquonian to the student body. We want to emphasize the freedom, opportunities, and advantages that the public school system has made available to its students. It is through the interest of our community that our school has become a place in which to develop our education, learn to become good citizens, and prepare ourselves for the future. It is our obligation as students to accept and appreciate these responsibilities. ' As we recall the inscription on the Statue of Liberty, Give me your tired, your poor . . . I lift my lamp beside the golden door , we must realize that only in this great country are these privileges offered to all. Most of us will look back on our high school days as the happiest and most productive days of our lives. For those who are not taking full advantage of this opportunity, we would like to remind you to make the most of it. The opportunities offered here may never come your way again. A sales-tax stamp drive and a paper drive were the first money- making projects attempted. Later a bake sale and other money-making projects were held to provide extra money for the junior-Senior Party. The junior class play, entitled Papa Was a Preachern, was one of the largest projects undertaken by the junior class. Under the direction of Robert Richardson, this play proved very successful and most entertaining. The last important event of the year was the junior-Senior Party, held on May 23. This party is an annual event sponsored by the juniors. The seniors were invited as guests for this occasion. Walker, Advisor, Larry Maness, John Hoerner, Doug Hulme, Melvin Brown, Tom Brown HE National Honor Society is an organization of high school juniors and seniors who have been elected in recognition of their outstanding attainment in four Helds of endeavor: scholarship, leadership, char- acter, and service. Membership in the organization is limited to fifteen per cent of the graduating class. Five per cent of these students may be elected near the end of their junior year, and the remaining ten per cent may be selected during their senior year. The emblem of the society is the keystone and the flaming torch. The keystone bears at its base the letters S , L , C , and S , denoting the four cardinal principles of the society. Newly-elected senior members received formal initiation during an assembly before the student body in January. The formal initiation for junior members and an informal initiation for all members elected this year was held at the combined National Honor Society-Quill and Scroll Banquet in May. Oui, the members of the French Club do. During the past year the members met at noon under the supervision of Mrs. Helen Chryst, French and English instructor. The main object of the French Club is to familiarize students with France-her language, her customs, and her people. It also gives practice in speaking the language. The theme for this year's programs has been Provinces of France. Members have given colorful and interesting reports on the more picturesque provinces. Amusing playlets were also performed in French. These helped the students to understand the French language. The French Club was honored to have two speakers, Miss Hulda Heller, of the Central High faculty, who showed colored slides of Paris and spoke of her visit to France, and Mr. Gustav Wincen- tak, of the Bennett faculty, who talked on his experiences in Europe. The mem- bers found these talks very interesting. The last activity of Le Cercle Francais for the year was a picnic at Mrs. Chryst's home in the country. This club is made up of girls who enjoy attending athletic events and improving school spirit. These students seated themselves in a reserved section during home football and basketball games in order to successfully carry out their organized cheers. The success of the Cheer Club this year was enhanced by the help ob- tained from its advisors Mrs. Emily Garby, business teacher, and Miss Nancy Wynkoop, home economics teacher. They spent considerable time organ- izing the club and sponsoring various projects. Some projects participated in by the girls were the conducting of a bake sale, selling pom-poms at athletic events, and sponsoring an athletic dinner. Director James C. Carter was assisted by two seniors, Gary Denman and Danny Stephan, who acted as student directors. Students of grades four, five, and six of Piqua's elementary schools en- joyed a portion of the band's program Thursday afternoon, April 4. The concert was given for the general public on Friday night, April 5. Sectional rehearsals were held every Monday and Thursday of each week to work out problems in the various sections of the band. This proved very helpful to the success of all the programs which were presented. The concert band participated in the district contest, where they received a 1 or superior rating. At the state contest, which was held April Z7 at Capital Univer- sity in Columbus, the group re- ceived a 1 rating from all four judges. Only two other bands in Class B-1 received four 1 ratings. Most popular among the drills was the Step Turn , which excited and thrilled the spectators. Several selected members of the band form a group known as the Pep Band. This group performed at the home basketball games and at the pep rallies. It added much to the spirit and enthusiasm of the student body. The Thanksgiving service, which was held at the Greene Street Methodist Church was the first program in which the choir took part. At Christmas time a Christmas program was presented to the student body and on February 14 the annual Choir Concert was given for the public. Both of these programs were given in the high school auditorium by the Sophomore and Varsity Choirs. On May 10, a Pop concert was presented to the public and the choir also furnished the music for the Baccalaureate service at graduation time. Several tape recordings were made by the choir. These recordings were broadcast by Piqua's radio station, WPTW. This organization, consisting of senior members selected from the Varsity Choir, is accompanied by Joyce Beaver. The group had most of their rehearsals on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 P. M. This time was selected in order to assure the group that the choir room would not otherwise be in use, and to provide a time when the members were not engaged in some other school activity. The group also practiced with the choir during their regular fifth period rehearsal each day. To earn these points, the girls participate in such sports as volleyball, basketball, alley soccer, tennis, badminton, hiking, and bowling. When a girl becomes a member of the 300 Club, an emblem represent- ing the club is presented to her. The girls who have earned 500 points or more receive a letter.
