The building was completed in 1856. lt was located on the same site as that occupied by the present high school+at the intersection of lligh and Follege Streets. in the central part of the city. lt was a three-story structure. housing the sixth through the twelfth grade. .X museum. office. and auditorium were also important parts of this building. .-X. ti. Chambers was Piqua's first high school principal and superintendent. The second high school was built in 1881, on the same location. while F. 111 Bennett was superintendent. l.ike the first-building. this was also a three-story structure. Along with recitation rooms. this building contain- ed a study hall. domestic science room, auditorium. nmsemn. manual training room. and the superintend- ent's office. The present high school building was ereeted on the same premises in 1914-. under the administration of George V. Dietrich. Vonstructed of light- colored yellow brick, it is also a three-story structure containing an audi- torimn. a gymnasium, and a cafeteria, along with recitation rooms. .X major remodeling project took place in 1938. On the third Hoor there were locker wells on the north side of the main corridor. These wells were removed and the corridor was placed in their stead. This provided space to add a library on the north side of the study hall. Previously the library was located in the superintendent's office. The biology, physics, and chemistry labora- tories were remodeled at this time. All three classrooms had been previously provided with risers. These were removed. The principal's office was moved from the third floor to the second floor and the space provided was made into a physics stock rooln. Also the chemistry stock- room was moved to a new location. The commercial department, which was located in the northeast corner of the building on the second ffoor. was moved to what was formerly the lower study hall on the same floor. Theold depart- ment was converted into regular classrooms. 1Yith the development of industry in Piqua. it became apparent that expansion of the high school would be necessary. ln 19-1-9. under the adminis- tration of C. Nl. Sims, a Trades and lndustry de- partment was added at the rear of the high school. .X new music room was also included in this expansion. ln the spring of 1955, construction was begun once again and new physics i and chemistry laboratories were built above the Trades and lndustry department. The music department was also expanded in this project. .Xt this same time. new lightning was placed in all the rooms of the building. This newest addition was completed under Superin- tendent, W. F. Iloerner. Throughout these years several Alma Blaters have been written, but the one that has captured the hearts of the public is the one written by Phil Gates in 1934. It was introduced as a school song by the band at the Fairmont-Piqua football game of 1934- at Fairmont. The response was such that it was introduced as a vocal num- ber to the high school choir the following week. Alumni and students will always remember the times they played and sang---Dear Alma Mater. Dear .Xlma Mater, Piqua lligh. Our hearts all turn to thee. Thou inspiration of our lives Through all the time to be. The many lessons learned from you Will guide our footsteps right: May all thy days be filled with praise. And all thy ways be bright..
