Then God said , Let there be Seniors in my image, after my likeness: and let them have dominion over the 11th, 10th, 9th graders, and over the Bobcats of the Mountains, and over the Lions of the jungle, and over the Vikings of the North, and every other creeping thing that creeps upon the Earth. So God created the Seniors in his own image, in his own image they were created: and he created them male and female. And God blessed them. and they filled the halls of Piper High and subdued them. And God saw what he had made, and it was good . . I 1 I ORGANIZATIONS , , 4 H ,'.- , A Firsi for Piper This year a new organization, The Medallion, was established at Piper High School. The newspaper staff of The Medallion has worked diligently from October 1975 trying to bring the outstanding events into focus for the students, faculty, and parents of our district. This was an entirely new experience for the students selected to the staff and for the advisors, Mrs. Rucker , and Mr. Fern. This year the office hold- ers were: Editor - Sandy Studyving Associate Editor - Jennifer Listong Assistant Editor - Robin Wiehe: Sports Editors: - Bart Nill and Dennis Smithg Editorial Editor - Bill Dhalman: Bus- iness Manager - Jackie Per- sellg Circulation Manager - Patty Masterson. In conclusion, we feel that The Medallion has proved a success and hope it will be continued in the years to come . ,,. I0 f 3? . 0 I .rf .1 x I . This responsibility is the production of a book that will be a meaningful reflection of one's high school days, not just a haphazard jumble of pictures and copy. At the beginning of the year, editor Kay Markley along with sponsor Mrs. Betty Pule, decided to make several major changes in the book's format. As a result, the size of the book has been enlarged and a full color spread was added to the Homecoming section. The Pirate Staff has tried to create a book which retains the favorite features v v Q of the student body and in doing so, sets a precedent for future yearbooks. Members this year were: back row, left to right: Cheryl Viles , Vicki Weaver, Shari Dodd, Kathy Pope, David Rice, Gayla .Tone,s Jodi Mattor, Sandy Studyvin , Joy McMillian, Diane Taylor, Assistant Editor - Karen Wood, Edi- tor - Kay Markley, Finan- cial Director - Jenny Bar- nett, and Sponsor - Mrs. Pule. They sponsored Homecoming and Courtwarming, along with the annual Volleyball Tournaments. The talent show was also a huge success, with close to three hundred people present the night of the show. This year they also sponsored student exchanges with Lansing and Wyandotte, which we benefited greatly from . Also, many more assemblies were enjoyed by the students than in years past. The student council members were, from top left: Mark Washington, Jan McMillan - President, Jim Burton, David Knetter, Phil Haney, Mr. Yost - Sponsor, Jodi Mattox, Kathy Zager, Jennifer Liston, April Wiehe - Vice-President, Robin Wiehe - Trea- surer, Valerie Jambrosic, Terry Gebhart, Jenny Bar- rett - Secretary, Kitty Runions, Kathy Chumley. One of these memories is going to cheerleading camp. In the picture to the left, Robin and Jenny pack up the car to leave as Mr. Barrett supervises. Both the Varsity and the Junior Varsity squads this year were very successful at summer camp. Var- sity won three superior ribbons, three spirit sticks, and were one of the top six out of fifty squads attending their camp. Junior Varsity won the title of Grand Champs of their camp, and also won a purple ribbon for an out- standing pon pom routine. This was only the third year of golf at Piper and the second consecutive year the team went to state. They also won or placed in many large meets during the season. At the Garnett Invitational the 4- man team placed second in a field of fourteen teams. They went on and won the Piper Invitational and placed a second and third medalist. At regionals, Piper was the only team in the state that qualified all six players for the state tournaments at Hillsboro. The 2-man team which consisted of Mike Carpenter and Ted Kubicki placed secondg and the 4-man team of Eric Lashbrook, Chip DeMoss, David Rice, and John Kubicki grabbed third to make the trip to state. Ted and Eric also qualified by placing lst and 4th respectively . Since Mrs. Walker was temporarily unable to coach the team, Ted Kubicki, Mr. Yost, and David Rice all chipped in to keep the team going. Lettermen were Ted Kubicki, Mike Carpenter, Dave Rice, Eric Lashbrook, Chip DeMoss, John Kubicki, and lim Markley. A The B-Team consisted of Greg Grin- zinger, Jim Burton, Bob Kittermen, Shane Suter, Pat Bailey, Richie Nigh, Craig Taylor. 33 Piper Spikers The 1975 volleyball season may not have been a success in the win - loss col- umn, but it was a lot of fun and that is the most important thing. Coach Yost was pleased with the improvement of the team, which was 101070 from the begin- ning of the year. Next year, the team will have to do without the experience of the four seniors who will be leaving this year: Pam Ste- phens, Susan laccard, Laurie Bigelo, and Kay Markley. Hopefully, the upcoming freshmen will be able to help out, along with the experience of the upper class WOMEN. With a little time and many hard practices, the 1976 volleyball team and season should be a great success. 34 'Y-Q-v -1b Bogs Track Piper was well represented by our Boy's Track Team. Members were: Gary Miller, lan McMillian, Bob Wilson, Mark Weber, Bill Dauhlman, Tim Rosales, Bart Buehler, Chuck Miller, Rusty Mathers, Chuck Parker, Steve Conway, Gabriel Zamora, and Darrel Stubenrauch. One of our seniors, Gary Miller placed second at both State Indoor and Outdoor. Gary also broke three school records which were shotput, 220 yd. dash, and high jump. The 440 yd. dash was broken by lan McMillian, the 880 relay, lan McMil1ian, Chuck Parker, Steve Conway, and Gary Miller was broken also. Under the hand of Coach Ron Hall the year was a success. With many returning underclassmen, we are looking forward to the following track season. ,JI N'-1 if M T' .. - Yflfif 35 - Y ' '11-,J ' i ,7 l , , Q5 Fd Y Y liif u'. - ' IS. Carol McClough, Diane Zatezalo, Mary Demaranville, Amy Holyfield, Tammy Little, and Coach Yost. Working as a team, these girls learned the basics, how to compete, and most of all how to have fun! By learning from mistakes made, they have great hopes for years to come . The only senior on junior varsity this year was the aggressive wing - Cheryl Brockrnan. She really helped spark the team. We'd like to wish Good Luck to all future basketball teams in the new gym at Piper. 48 Girls Basketball Goes +o Siaiel This year at PHS a new sport was origi- nated - Girls' Basketball, under the direction of John .Yost. CAnd by the way, the girls really didn't go to Stateg we just wanted to catch your attention!J By just looking at our records one might think we had a losing season, but there were many games lost by a very narrow margin. Only one senior was on the varsity squad this year - Laurie Bigelow, who played the position of center. Other members this year included: Kim Frank- enfield, Laurie Bigelow, Kathy Chum- ley, Kitty Runions, Diane Zatezalo, Cheryl Brockman, Mary Demaranville, Julie Rabon, Denise Demaranville, Lin- nea Perrin, Amy I-lolyfield. Maybe next year when you read the headline under Girls Basketball in THE PIRATE, the girls WILL have gone to state! ! ! 49 ACTIVITIES J'-6 'Q M- , 'u Xe 'Q - V Y li I 1 NF 2 7 5 v Y A- F' , 1513? Spirit was raised during the Spring Hill tournament by Spirit Week. Athletes and fans changed the daily pace by dressing differ- ently each day of the week. Kid and sucker day is shown by Kathy Zager and Jodi Mattos. John Kubicki and Terry Gebhart put many patterns together for Clash Day. Old Folks Day is shown here by three of our sen- iors. Soul day was displayed by a large group of people. The big- gest day of the week, and the day everyone looked forward to was 50's Day. During sixth hour, the whole school participated in a Sock Hop. Kay Markley and Ted Kubicki are shown on the opposite page dancing to At the Hop. Af.- 4 .' .. 'I 2 F .' ' -an af fl I 4. -Pl .14 '. 1 '4' Mr! ' 15 f X4 L' I Q x X' -1 f If V r 1 f 5. 'L Talenf Show a Success The talent show is sponsored annually by the Student Council. This year it was a great success, as we had close to 300 people present the night of the show. A wide variety of talent was shown by a various number of students in the High School. Among the acts featured this year were: Lisa Feden and Ian McMillian singing Rag Time B1ues : Jim Burton - The Great Carnac g Robin Wiehe, panto- mining Second Hand Rose : Bill Dahlman, readings from Spoon River Anthology , and the hit of the show - a visit by The Beach Boys! ! Jennifer Liston was our Master of Ceremo- nies this year. We'd like to express a special Thank You to Mrs. Sawka for all the hours she put in to help us make the 1976 Talent Show a success! - 5 , - Z. The Spirit Rally and bon fire on Homecoming eve was a huge success. Victory yells were heard throughout the town of Piper. Candidates for Homecoming Queen were selected by the foot- ball team. They were Jenny Bar- rett, Cheryl Brockman, Kay Markley, and Pam Stephens. On the day of the big game, the stu- dent body voted for Queen. Pep Club and Student Council deserved a vote of appreciation for a week's labor on a float and preparations for the dance. Between halves, the Queen candidates and their escorts walked through a Pep Club for- mation as the announcer called forth the name of Piper's Home- coming Queen for 1975 . . . Pam Stephens. Rain failed to dampen the Pirate Spirit as they fought Immaculata to the bitter end with a loss. Excited couples enjoyed the fabulous music of Charter between the hours of 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. on October 4. But the excitement of the dance was only half the fun. Afterwards many couples went out for a night on the town. The memory of Home- coming 1975 will not be easily forgotten by those who attended. ,. .L , 0 I ,, www ... 1 aff' . - I Y I 1-I -pf' . :HV .f-U..-,. - , , 5 fl, el ' , '51 .Mlm Il , ' . For guys, the same old flannel shirts or regular t-shirts, tennis shoes, and of course, who could forget the Levi's! Rings that changed color to show the mood you're in, called Mood Rings, came in fast for both guys and girls, but they left as fast as they came. These rings varied in price from 33.00 to S10.00. But in spite of the high cost of all different fads, the students at P.H.S. just like all other students across the nation, managed to keep up with the changing styles . .4 CLASSES The Rookies . . . For this event, the juniors traditionally have carried the burden of the cost, planning, and decorating as a gift to the seniors . Everyone enjoyed the tour through Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City. They were fascinated by such things as the gunsmith's shop, the candy stores, the candle dipping shop and the many other novelty shops .
